Smoking on Cruise Ships

Three tables and some slot machines.  Looks like they put it together for the handful of complainers that cannot seem to live with just a non smoking half of the casino.  The anti smoker crowd is a small but loud subsection of cruisers and I think they understand that.

The Golden Room was originally going to be the high rollers section of the casino for the Asian market but when they pulled Wonder out of Asia they had to adapt to fit the American market. It's definitely not a high rollers area currently with reasonable table limits for the three tables in there and a variety of slot machines with low minimums.  I would encourage all the anti-smokers to take advantage of this room as a way to vote with their dollars and encourage the separation.

And overwhelm the space so that Royal realizes just how many people take issue with the polluted environment that is the normal casino.

If they were to ban smoking, smokers would laugh and move on.  Smokers do not need to pay for a vacation to be inconvenienced and definitely do not need a cruise line to push them to vaping.  Most adults like to make their own decisions.

Disney has banned all smoking in their parks, and they are getting hit with boycotts from smokers who will not drop a penny there.

I only offered up the vaping thing because it is far less offensive and smelly that smoking. Perhaps if given the choice of vaping or not cruising most smokers would choose vaping as an alternative.

PS. I don't think Disney is worried about smoker boycotts. When little Tommy and Mary want to go to Disney, mommy and daddy will take them regardless of the restrictions.

Vapor contains as much or as little nicotine as you want. It's an effective way of cutting back dependence on nicotine or weaning off it completely.  Inhaling smoke from burning substances is where the danger of smoking lies, not from nicotine. There are none of those substances in vapor. I suspect that if you look at who funded those vape studies you'll find the tobacco companies behind them. The record is still out on whether vaporized glycerine (the active ingredient in vapor) is dangerous.

I just read the John Hopkins study. It is full of terms like "may be more harmful"  "studies suggest" etc. References to modified vaping devices and dangerous chemicals and those who vape THC products to get high. The study seems to suggest that introducing nicotine through vaping is dangerous but without mentioning the fact that you can buy vaping products with reduced or even no nicotine in them. Often used as a smoking cessation device.

Bottom line is this...."Regular tobacco cigarettes contain 7,000 chemicals, many of which are toxic. While we don’t know exactly what chemicals are in e-cigarettes, Blaha says “There’s almost no doubt that vaping exposes you to fewer toxic chemicals than smoking traditional cigarettes.”

So vaping might/may be dangerous but they "don't know exactly what chemicals are in e-cigarettes".  Nicotine in e-cigs is bad even though you can reduce it to zero. "Studies suggest" but there is no facts to support how dangerous vaping might or might not be.

So, ingesting unknown numbers and quantities of unknown chemicals is a valid alternative?

Full disclosure, I am a former smoker who quit 11 years ago for reasons of my own. However, I do enjoy an occassional cigar, particularly when cruising.

I have noticed a subtle, but non the less significant shift in the direction of anti-smoking policies onboard.

For example onboard Freedom:

  • The Connoisseur Lounge which was formerly next to the Star Lounge, was changed to a library/game/quiet room during her amplification.
  • The size of the smoking areas, where ash trays and such are provided, on the port side of deck 4 and pool deck appear to have reduced.

This is my own observation and not based on scientific fact. But it does indicate to me that Royal are at least attempting to accomodate all passenger requirements rather than promote a particular lifestyle. So while I may be a bit miffed at the loss of the Connoisseur Lounge, I applaud their actions in ensuring all needs are addressed.

Jeeze, the fun goalies on this thread I am surprised that it hasn't been closed to comment yet. As a previous smoker I am not a fan of smoking indoors but dont have a problem with it in Casinos but wouldn't care one way or the other if it was eliminated and could understand it. But as someone who likes to have a cigar when on vacation I don't think I could see it being no smoking up on the pool deck when you are outside. I am actually surprised that they don't move that smoking area up one more deck so you are not directly on the physical pool deck and then our smoke would be even less noticeable.

THAT would be wonderful!!

It would come with a drawback for the smokers, though - nowhere to get out of the blazing sun while indulging.

That is true, I guess you cant have the 90 year old die hards, actually dying of heat stroke while they smoke their heaters. But I would probably just go up and have my cigar at night haha.

I actually don't know a single smoker where I live and everyone I know that cruises hates to be around smoke.  I don't think it is as small as you think it is.  Marriott doesn't allow smoking anywhere near your room and I hardly ever see people in the smoking sections that have gotten smaller and less of them over the years.  Yet their resorts are still packed.  Disney laughed at smokers not coming to their parks.  They don't need smokers, that place is packed with families and the majority of people with kids don't smoke.  So they also had less and less and smaller and smaller smoking sections because they didn't need them and then got rid of them.  Everyone I know was extremely happy to see them go away.

Only 14% of people smoke.  I imagine a large % of that 14% can't even afford vacations.

Just did the 3 day Ensenada cruise on Navigator of the seas. They have a small smoking section on deck 11 by the pool deck and a whole side of deck 4 with smoking allowed. I’m a cigar smoker and some ships have designated cigar/pipe areas and/or times but this was “allowed” just as cigarettes. I pretty much had deck 4 to my self every evening after dinner. I’ll be there for the New Years cruise if you will. 🛳

Don't believe its less obnoxious...With all the different flavors, some flavors just plain stink in our opinion.  Seeing someone vaping in a car it looks like the car is on fire.

Absolutely not.  There is no smoking allowed anywhere in your cabin or on balconies.  It's a major fire hazard.

Not to argue with you at all.  But, smoking on/in a cabin wasn't a fire hazard until it was politically correct to say so.  Just stating things as I saw/see them.  YMMV  Now, there were some, a very small minority, that just like anything else, didn't/weren't adult enough to be responsible and I bet they are the some ones today that still ignore just about every rule just for the fun of it.  You just don't know, or maybe you do, how many times I've smelled Marijuana coming from a cabin or two in front of mine.  I don't have a problem with people smoking a little hooch every now and then.  But then turn around a complain about cigarette smoking, no, that's a non-starter for me.  BTW, this comment IS NOT directed toward you, @SpeedNoodles, not at all.

BTW, I'm a non-smoker.

I have been in a nonsmoking household since I was born because of my allergies.  My father had to quit smoking after a 20 year habit or give me up for adoption.  Thankfully he chose to quit instead of the other choice!

As long as RCCL builds their ships so that I can maneuver around to the locations I like to enjoy while sailing without crossing through Smoking areas (IE Casino, Pool Deck, ETC.) I will continue to enjoy cruising!

I kinda was hoping the Golden Room was going to be the only smoking area to gamble in. Oh well, it's a business decision.

I admit that this comment is totally anecdotal:  I'm not 90, but I am 70 and my observations at the "smoking deck" is that there are very few elderly smokers but many many 30 somethings smoking their a$$es off.  Most elderly that I know have either never smoked, quit many years ago, or recently quit.  Not to many of them can afford to smoke anymore or actually listened to their Dr.  I quit in 2005 because, and only because of the cost involved.  I still have the feeling of "live and let live, or die, their choice" as far as smoking is concerned and I love to be around smoking for short periods of time.  No, I don't want to live or visit a smokers home and I won't buy a second hand car that belonged to a smoker.  If you think you are going to die because of being around smokers, don't be around smokers.  I have two daughters who are now in their 40s, neither have any indication of having issues with being in the same home as I smoked like a chimney, with the windows closed, A/C or heat on.  In the car with windows closed.  My wife NEVER smoked.  None of us have any indication of lung issues.  Yes, I understand that there are many that can't say that and I really do feel bad for them and their families.  I'm/we are the lucky ones, I guess.  AND, I'm not denying that smoking isn't a hazard to your health.  On the other hand, I also believe and will fight to the death for the right of an individual and/or company to restrict their own property to non-smoking.  The two or three areas set aside for smoking on a cruise ship amounts to about 3 or 4 % (a total SWAG) or less of the ships public areas.  I just don't think that is too much to ask.  If you wear a perfume or calogne that makes me feel sick, I move away from you.  Believe me, some perfumes and/or colognes do make me sick, so does the smell of cooked un-fresh fish, I don't go into fish markets!

YMMV

Now that cruise ships are opening back up, what are the chances of the ships remaining non-smoking in the casinos?  We have been on Carnival and RCCL this past fall and January 2022.  It was very nice not having to breathe in the smoke. People were still gambling. Casino was busy as ever.  It was especially nice to be able to walk through the casino and not smell like smoke when walked out.  Any thoughts?

We sailed in December 2021 Liberity of the seas . Smoking was allowed in the casino's. , and according to RCCL Web site Smoking is allowed in the casino's From the RCCL web site ....Casino Royale allows smoking and has a designated area for non-smoking guests. There will be visible signage indicating the non-smoking area in the casino.

No surprise here. For every person that says they will no longer gamble if smoking is not allowed in the casino, there are just as many who say the main reason they do not gamble is because of the smoke. The lines just have to choose who they want hear the complaining from. For whatever reason they choose to weather the complaints of non smokers. Maybe we need to be more annoying 😜.

No idea why ppl cant get along and be ok with differences.

I am sorry you need to walk on the other side of the pool deck to get to the buffet or you might need to gamble at  a different time when its not so busy with "smokers"......but no, just ban it all and kick them off so you can do what you want when you want.

I thought everyone was becoming more woke and inclusive in the USA these past couple of years...🙄

Typical mindset now of so many ppl out there.

My husband wasn't as lucky with his father smoking in the house/car with him.  He has longterm issues because of it.  I was in culture shock when I met his dad, because my dad stopped when the doctor said it wasn't good for him to smoke around me.  So when his dad would light up next to me I was caught off guard.  My husband and I avoid smokers because if he is around them too long he typically ends up having sinus issues.  Luckily his dad quit when I put my foot down and said he couldn't be around his new grandkids if he smelled like smoke and he surely wasn't smoking at my house anymore even outside since he would come in smelling like a chimney

My father died of COPD shortly after I quit but, I let him smoke in the house until we had to put him in an assisted living facility, it didn't bother any of us.  He lived with us for that last several years of his life.  He was a smoker.  He did quit several times during his life, he'd quit for a year or two at a time.  I don't know why he kept starting again.  As stated, I quit only because of the cost.  I always said that if cigarettes ever got above $5.00 a pack, I'd quit, and I did.  I'm 70 now with no lung issues.  I have age related physical restrictions, but that is about it.  My wife is about the same.  But, she never smoked at all.  In fact, we both walk almost everyday.  I speed walk, I try to do 3.5 miles in about 48 minutes.  My resting heart rate is in the mid to high 40s.  My Drs say I'm blessed to be in such good shape, vitals that is.  I'm a little overweight.  But, I've lost about 85 pounds over the last couple years.

Sorry, TMI.  It's late and I'm the only one up.  That's when I ramble a lot.

As I stated in another thread.  Some people, not you, want to quote %s of people that smoke vs nonsmokers in the general public.  Something like only 14% of people smoke, now.  I don't dispute that at all and I really don't care what the %ages are.  However, I'm sure Royal does.  Not the general public/non-cruising public but the % of how many smokers gamble in their casinos.  I believe that a large %, larger than the general public, of gamblers are smokers.  Therefore, smoking is allowed, albeit in small sections.

Do I believe that Royal, et al, will do away with smoking on their ships eventually?  Hell yes, I do.  But, not until it makes business sense.  And I really don't care one way or another.  I'll enjoy myself either way.

To me, rabid/radical anti smoking folks are kinda like the people that complain because someone in the MDR with a hat on or not in formal attire.  You meal is going to taste the same if I have my hat on or not, I promise.

BTW, this was not intended towards anyone in particular in here.  Just a generalize comment, except the first sentence.

If I just had to look at smokers I 100% wouldn't care just like I don't care what others wear.

My issues is my allergies go insane around smokers and my husband ends up with sinus issues that many times ends in a  sinus infection.  So we avoid smokers and love that bans in Disney and other places allow us to do this easier.  I wish I could spend money in a casino on a cruise ship, but with smoking there is zero enjoyment.  So I feel your analogy fails on that end of things.

I will say I am haven't been used to being around smoking.  My dad stopped around me, I have never allowed it in my house or car, and restaurants have been non-smoking where I lived for 18+ years.  I am just not around it often.  But I also book hotels based on smoking status, so it is always something we think about when going places.

I don't mind the smoking in marked areas. I don't like the casino allowing it but there are areas.

What I object to is people smoking on their balcony's and tossing the butts-- what they think is over board but lands on the balcony behind and below.

We use to leave our balcony door open when sleeping. We can't do that now because we're afraid a butt will come in and start a fire.  Don't know about you all but cruise after cruise people are smoking and tossing. Our last cruise I told the steward to let the guy know 2 cabins forward if I see him tossing them again I'm reporting him and the ship can pull the tape video.  This is a very dangerous situation. NCL a few years ago had the side of the ship burn--plastic dividers on balcony's caught fire.

Cigarette butts aside, NEVER sleep with your balcony door open; you are severely affecting the air conditioning capacity of your neighbors that are in your same zone.

If there isn't a smoking area in the Casino, smokers would have to leave the Casino to go to the "outdoor" smoking area.  The more time they are not in the Casino, the less time and money they are spending in the Casino!  Not a good business practice.

What we need to do, as non-smokers is demand that Royal, et al, upgrade their ventilation/filtering system(s) in the indoor smoking areas and regularly maintain them.

But not an ideal family cruise.  What I don't understand about Carnival and RC who both cater to family cruises (most parents of kids don't smoke) is that they don't offer some ships as smoke free and others at smoking out of major ports.  You have multiple Oasis class ships sailing out of Florida, why not take advantage of that and make one Oasis class ship (one with lots of family slides and stuff) a non-smoking ship.  This would allow them to appeal to a large population of families who would love to never smell smoke and also not effect smokers who can just not pick that ship.  It really would be an easy fix.

I report people ASAP who smoke on balconies at non-smoking resorts, I would have zero issue making a phone call if someone was smoking n a balcony on a cruise ship.  Like you said it is a fire hazard if they are throwing butts off the balcony.  But I paid for a balcony to enjoy and I won't be stuck inside because of some idiot smoker who isn't following the rules.  When you paid for the cruise you knew there was no smoking on the balcony, why would you then break that rule?

It's very difficult to market one ship as the smoking ship, or non-smoking ship.  Guests choose to book a cruise for a variety of reasons.  Sometimes the itinerary but sometimes for the ship itself.  A returning guest would complain they don't get to see Grease or the Aqua80 show because it's on that ship they can't sail on.  Sometimes there is one specific week of the year they can sail and now the non-smoking ship doesn't go where they want to go that week.  "Why did they make Oasis the smoking ship!  That's the ship I want to sail on but I can't!"

There are a lot of people who don't fully research specific details and would book a cruise only to find themselves on the fully smoking ship, or completely non-smoking ship.  "What a disaster!  It was all smokers!  No one told me!  I couldn't breathe!"

Some people book a cruise from Port Canaveral because they are also visiting a theme park.  Some people find Port Everglades easier to fly into.  International guests might prefer Miami.  By making one ship smoking/non-smoking you are effectively making that port of departure smoking or non-smoking and now Royal is at a disadvantage compared to the competition from that port.

Demand might plumett for the smoking ship so they have to put that ship on sale to fill it.  Now guests are upset because they want the cheapest cruise fare but it's only offered on a smoking ship.

You are also pitting family members against each other.   Multigenerational family wants to go on a cruise but Uncle John Doe is a smoker so he wants the smoking ship.  Half the family is dead set against that, a quarter of the family doesn't care.  It turns into a big conflict for the family and Royal is to blame.

And so on and so on.  It just doesn't work.
