Smoking on Cruise Ships

Recommended Posts

Now that cruise ships are opening back up, what are the chances of the ships remaining non-smoking in the casinos?  We have been on Carnival and RCCL this past fall and January 2022.  It was very nice not having to breathe in the smoke. People were still gambling. Casino was busy as ever.  It was especially nice to be able to walk through the casino and not smell like smoke when walked out.  Any thoughts?

I believe they have already allowed smoking to permit in casinos again.

Unpopluar opinion... I have found that wearing a mask in the casino helps with the smell and allergies. I wish it they would go non smoking permanently.

I wish they would as well, even a mask doesn't help me so I usually just walk outside on deck 4 rather than go through it.  Even just walking past the stairs in the Promenade that go down to the casino while wearing a mask I could smell it come up.

But who knows if enough people tell them what they want maybe something can be changed.  I don't lose a dime by making a petition online and it's all the rage now so I figured why not.  At the very least we could get them to pave over the stairs and install sliding glass doors on either end so the ones who want to be in there can marinate in it.  https://chng.it/2pTZpRfN6Y

Yes, unfortunately that is true.  We were on Oasis in January and casino was smoke free.  On our Navigator sailing in February casino and pool deck were back to allowing smoking and it was awful.  At least on the pool deck you can walk on the other side to try to avoid but when the solarium doors opened on that side it seeped through.  The casino was packed and full of smoke any time we went to play.  Would much prefer a smoke free environment!

Smoking will never go away in casinos.

At the end of the day the people who smoke and drink in the casino stay longer and spend more money.  Unlikely they Gey get banned.

Both of those were what they said when our state was discussing the indoor smoking Bans.

Both Bars and Casino's now have indoor smoking banned and not only did none of them go out of business, they make just as much money now as they did before the bans.

As someone said while it was banned on the ships the Casino was still crowded.

Let the market decide. Carnival experimented with an entirely non smoking ship but that failed. Now they converted a convention center area into a second and separate non smoking casino on three ships as an experiment. if that is successful, expect Royal to follow suit and find a minimally used area to create a second casino. Cruise ships and tribal casinos are immune from voters and government bans so they are the true test of market economies, a la Adam Smith. The market will decide. I have a single buddy that thinks cruises should have strip clubs and brothels onboard since they are immune from local laws but I regularly remind him that they would do that if, and only if, they wanted him to cruise more at the loss of thousands of others who disagree with him. The reality is, it is a business and they decide, not my buddy and not the non smoker casino fans, they do what works to maximize profit. Until then, they will allow smoking in the casino, their research shows non smokers aren't as valuable, when that changes, so will the policy. Let the invisible hand of economics prevail.

On the Wonder of the Seas, there is a non-smoking casino.  I believe it's where Jazz on 4 used to be.

Curious, I thought I read that there are sliding glass doors to enter the casino. If so does this 'help' keep some/most of the smoke in?

Someone walks near the doors - they open. Then science kicks in - the differential air pressure between the two locations causes the air to rush in the direction of the lower pressure. Given that the casino is a smaller, closed area it will almost certainly have the higher air pressure causing the smoke to move FROM the casino TO the other areas. The only solution to this would be to establish an air handling system such that there is a negative pressure created in the casino (similar to what is used for chemistry laboratories to keep any potential harmful fumes in the lab rather than moving to office area or corridors).

The casinos on Celebrity and Virgin Voyages are both non-smoking. I wish Royal would do the same, but until they do I'll spend casino money on other cruise lines.

It can be done and it's time it should be.  That also means that if it happens people need to be prepared to put their money where their mouth is.  Maybe it's not much but I would be much more willing to gamble 50 bucks if smoking was abolished than if they leave it in place.  On my last cruise I didn't even use the free play because it stunk so bad.

But honestly if we don't want smoking in the casino's we have to step up and say something.  Maybe it won't do any good but sitting there saying you want something done and not step up to make it well known things will never change.  I can only do so much starting the petition, people have to push others to sign the thing so it can go to the cruise lines.  If a few hundred thousand people who cruise sign and get their friends to sign as well it will be at a million within a month, it took a year to sail a million people on Royal Caribbean and I am sure some of those are duplicates.  They will take notice if that many people sign.

When I look at these threads I think of the ban on discussions about vaccines and protocols.  I am really not sure why this is different.  I am not a smoker, and don't recommend it, but Royal has their policy and well...

The difference here is that smoking vs. not smoking doesn't turn political.

The smoking policy has a financial basis behind it. Protocol stuff doesn't.

I'm not sure I understand the significance of the financial basis, or how protocols wouldn't have a financial basis.

My point was that you have a group of people that want to smoke and a group of people that don't want to, and don't want other people to smoke around them.  The prevailing opinion is that smokers shouldn't have access.  Insert those that aren't vaccinated, or don't want to vaccinate their kids.

Yes there are a lot of differences, but both are treated as second class citizens.  If you don't want smoking on cruise ships, then there is zero consideration for those that do.  I don't think people should smoke, for their own health reasons, but if Royal doesn't want people to smoke they can make the casinos non-smoking, but they don't and we all know why.

IMO....cruise ships should ban smoking completely but promote and sell vapping stuff. Say what you want but vapping is considerably safer and less obnoxious than smoking.  They could hold clinics and sell vapping stuff.

Just to be clear I am not/never been a smoker or a vaper. I do have relatives who switched from smoking to vaping and they are pleasant to be around even while vaping.  It's also a good way to stop smoking.

Johns Hopkins and many other peer reviewed publications will differ with you. Vaping is only "marginally" less dangerous to your health than smoking. Vape contains nearly as much nicotine as a cigarette, and in some instances more by tidal volume.  Some chemicals, mainly VOCs, are found in much higher levels in a vape cloud than in a cigarette.

A very healthy non-smoker here.  I don't think any of us should go outdoors or stay indoors, they're unhealthy and can kill/make you sick.  I should never have spent more than 20 years in the Active U.S. Army and in law enforcement because it could have been hazardous to my health.  I get ill when I smell un-fresh fish and very strong perfume.  We need to ban un-fresh fish and very strong perfume.  I'm allergic to crime, therefore, I don't go to high crime areas.  Just say'in!

Vapor contains as much or as little nicotine as you want. It's an effective way of cutting back dependence on nicotine or weaning off it completely.  Inhaling smoke from burning substances is where the danger of smoking lies, not from nicotine. There are none of those substances in vapor. I suspect that if you look at who funded those vape studies you'll find the tobacco companies behind them. The record is still out on whether vaporized glycerine (the active ingredient in vapor) is dangerous.

We were on the first cruise for Wonder.  Large casino, half smoking and half non-smoking.  Divided by the bar in the middle.  Still had people complaining about smoke.  Bottom line, if smoking bothers you, 95+% of the of the ship that is smoke free, go there....

Still not sure why RCL does not set up a couple of indoor bars for smokers, maybe even right off the casino floor.

Smokers get one small section on the pool deck, usually way too small at the beginning of the cruise, which gets made bigger and bigger as the cruise goes on, as we expand it to suit.

Then the ONLY place indoors iand comfortable for smokers s the casino.  So until RC brings back its cigar bar or something like it, ignore all of the complainers who need not go into those bars if they choose not to, the cruise lines know where the casino money comes from and a boycott by smokers would put a big hit on the casino's bottom line.

Happy cruising...

If they were to ban smoking, smokers would laugh and move on.  Smokers do not need to pay for a vacation to be inconvenienced and definitely do not need a cruise line to push them to vaping.  Most adults like to make their own decisions.

Disney has banned all smoking in their parks, and they are getting hit with boycotts from smokers who will not drop a penny there.

Yes, Golden Room is the non smoking casino that replaces Jazz on 4

Three tables and some slot machines.  Looks like they put it together for the handful of complainers that cannot seem to live with just a non smoking half of the casino.  The anti smoker crowd is a small but loud subsection of cruisers and I think they understand that.

Don't really care about the casino as I don't usually go to those places, but like you said as an adult I like to make my own decision and not have that decision made for me by people smoking in the rooms I would love to go in.

I didn't know that Disney is no smoking but that's good to hear I think I will like it there.
