Things you miss from Royal...

Not necessarily caused by COVID, but what is something you miss from current Royal Ships that you used to be able to do or purchase onboard?

I miss ship specific postcards in the gift shop...  Always enjoyed sending those out as well as purchasing an extra one or two for bookmarks...

Switched over to shot glasses and now those seem to be dwindling...

I've started now collecting casino chips. Normally ask for a $1 and $5 chip at an empty table or if playing a table remember not to cash them in.

Does each ship have it's own specific/labeled casino chips? (I don't play any of the table games)

The souvenir glasses when you bought a drink.

The three layer drinks coming around at dinner time with the souvenir shooter glasses they came in. We have a nice collection of all the different colors in three different varieties.

We're cruising in May with a group of 10. The plan is to have a pre-cruise party and you can be sure the shooter glasses will be on full display (i.e. in use).

Here is the collection so far. Isn't the best picture.

So I was wrong. The older ships had a unique design. Newer ones, outside the inaugural chips, are just "ship name".

It is so interesting to read what people collect from their cruises, things I would have never thought of.

The only thing I keep in a collection from my cruises is my sea pass card.  I have never thrown away a single sea pass card from any of my cruises I have them all (including one from Carnival 😑) all in a collector style book.

My husband collect shot glasses but those collector items are hard to come by now.

Magnets.  I was on Freedom and no magnet of the ship.  I wanted to add it to my collection.  I ended up buying a key chain and I will buy the self adhesive magnet to make my own, not the same, but it's something!

Well that's a bummer!  I collect them, too.  I was able to get one on Allure in October and Odyssey a few weeks ago.  Maybe they were just out of them.

The Pepper Mill, the asst. waiter (usually) would come around and ask if you wanted pepper.  Also the variety of bread instead now you get a little basket with about 5 oi pieces in it. and every night it always 2 pieces of WHITE Italian type bread and a couple of WHITE rolls . Nothing in dark flour. maybe once in a while a seeded roll.  Also as I mentioned before the Savey bites

Last month on the Odyssey we ask the waiter about the Savory bites and pumpkin seed rolls and they were on our table every night after that.

We miss buying sea glass gifts from the shops, although we have plenty from years past.

I miss some of the desserts -- I can't remember the last time I had "chocolate sensation".  I think it may be available in the MDR, just less frequently.

I miss the giant quarter slot machine at the Casino exit on one of the older ships, I think the Grandeur.

Savory Bites

They're like a bite size bagel with poppy seeds. You might get stares from other diners near by as they see what you got and they didn't.

We'll be on Wonder and then Odyssey in April and will have to remember to ask. Thanks for the reminder.

They also have dried cranberries, which is the only part of the savory bite that I am not particularly fond of.  Still like them though, and I love the pumpkin seed rolls !

I miss the in-person, full lifejacket, sweat in places that should never see sweat muster drills.

I don't miss the sweaty muster drills, but I do miss the annoyance with people who take too long to report to the station.  Is it a good thing to say you miss something that's bad?

I was told by a Pinnacle several years ago that if you're waiting for others to show up to the muster drill, then you're too early

On the Oasis class, we missed the parade, the character breakfast, and although I can't name many of them, the Compass spanning multiple pages, full of way-too-many choices of things to do. I bring up the last as it was a serious issue on our cruise on Oasis this past October: because there were limited activities, even the remote activities were full. For example, my daughters and I decided to show up 30 minutes early for the daily trivia so that we could grab a drink and our 'choice' of seats. We were stopped at the entrance as no seats were available... FOR TRIVIA. Same went for evening karaoke sessions. Unless you committed to arriving an hour early, most events were impossible to attend. They made an amazing effort to return us to sea but unless you wanted to attend the art auction for a fifth time, there weren't the wide selection of activities we are accustomed to.

Hi,

I collect these casino chips as well.  You have a very nice collection.  Do you have spares to sell?

Regards,

I miss the DreamWorks characters/parades. They went away after I was too old to care that much, but now that I have kids of my own, I would have really loved that extra excitement for the kids!

I will never forget Shrek scaring the crap out of my then 3-year-old niece. It was at a character breakfast and he sent her hiding under the table. 🤣

Some ships used to have a sushi bar within the windjammer area

THIS! I used to go get sushi as a pre-dinner snack every night!

I also miss First Night Done Right (BOGO for specialty restaurants on the first night open to everyone, not just a D+ perk like it is now).

I miss the books they had in each stateroom which detailed the port information, shopping exc. Some of the books had interesting facts about the ship or detailed the ship building process which was a nice touch. I haven’t seen the books in years. I don’t really watch TV in the staterooms but I used to like the video showing the ship building as well (not sure if that’s long gone as well).

The shipbuilding video is still on Channel 1 or 2.   The videos vary but I saw one with the original ships like Song of Norway and Empress to the latest video for Wonder.

I think it comes on the same channel that the cruise director uses for the morning updates and activities.
