I believe even Royal had a cruise ship arrested once or twice. They were held in port till some fees were paid.

It happens but this company is trying to avoid their ship being seized so they can avoid paying anything if they can.

Additional info in this article says Crystal Cruises is suspending all cruises until at least April.  Also, their parent company (Genting Hong Kong) has started liquidation proceedings although it isn't clear whether that refers to liquidating Crystal Cruises or Genting Hong Kong itself.  It says they lost $1.7 billion due to the pandemic which seems extremely high since they are so much smaller than Royal.  I'm assuming they are hoping to sell one or more ships to keep the company going.

To be honest I would not be surprised if they over inflated the numbers.  They will then file bankruptcy and the ships will be sold to another company that will adopt the same name and it will be business as usual.  It's not uncommon to see things like that in any industry.

The parent company is liquidating so the cruise line fell because of that.

Other Genting companies built the pier and resort in Bimini so Genting has its ventures in many areas that all have incurred losses.  With no ships coming into their pier and no people to the resort/casino that is also a source of lost revenue that impacted the overall company.

This is probably why they chose that location to end the cruise.  They may also owe money to other ports, longshoremen, fuel suppliers, etc. so in choosing Bimini the parent company owns the pier.

In the world of shipping it's not unheard of for a ship to be seized due to unpaid bills or even crew wages.  Given the international nature of shipping and the fact that ships have propellers and can leave port quickly it can be hard for creditors to seize a ship.  Some ports are in countries that recognize other country claims and warrants while some countries don't so a cargo or tanker ship Captain may chose ports to avoid detention and seizure while they continue to operate and earn revenue they hope can satisfy the creditors they are running from.  That generally doesn't end well but it's not unheard of for some other non-cruise ships to play this catch me if you can game as they evade the law.

Hmmm... how ironic for the Independence to be arrested. 😜

It's kinda hard to imagine any Freedom class ship being arrested.

Yep, but it happens.  Royal did the right thing and paid what was due.  I am guessing they had something get missed the previous month and the port knew exactly how to guarantee payment.

Had a thought though.  I know it's possible to have someone go hijack just about anything.  For the money involved I wonder if the company who has not been paid is trying to make plans to force the return of the ship to US waters.  Could be something to watch for with the "private security" companies out there who send people over to war zones to act as armed escorts possibly going to board the ship while it's in international waters to help facilitating the execution of an arrest warrant.  They don't look like they are going to try and stay very far from the US since they are still sitting there between the island where they dropped off and Miami.

Then again I wonder if there is a reward for bringing it in to port?  Could be fun to try, LOL.
