baltodave
For a 4-night Catalina & Ensenada cruise out of LA, I was wondering if Wifi is really needed? In other words, will my phone have (TMobile) coverage in US Waters (and Catalina). I do realize, I need to contact Tmobile to see if my plan includes Mexico. Thanks all! twangster
Most modern TMo plans include Canada and Mexico at LTE data rates in the unlimited home service area but perhaps with a 5GB or 10GB data cap. Voom is never "necessary" unless you need to be connected 24 x 7. Elderly parents that have health concerns? Kids at home with sitters? That sort of thing. If you can wait until in port to catch up on life then you don't need a Voom plan.
stevendom57
You probably won't get coverage while at sea but you will have it in port, if you plan covers Mexico.
smokeybandit
Once you're 12+ miles from land you'll be on ship's cellular.

And due to shipping lanes, my guess is that they will sail beyond 12+ miles to avoid the shipping lanes and to allow passengers to gamble and shop. I have T-Mobile and you will have an OK signal in the LA port, and good signal on Catalina and in Ensenada (if you have that plan). If you need a good signal at night you may want the plan. Matt
It's really a question of if you want internet access while at sea between port stops.
baltodave
Thanks everyone for your feedback. I should have also said that another reason for internet is so my wife and I can text between us. Of course, the Royal app also allows that at $2/day/pp and we might try it out for this short cruise.
