Thanks @WAAAYTOOO. I like the luggage idea.  Definitely would like it all to follow us to our room, but what if our room is not ready?  What if they say go eat and come back?

Hmmm....you ask all the hard questions !  LOL

I dunno.  I never had it happen.  I guess you would just tell the porter to go ahead and take your luggage to the suite but to PLEASE take it upstairs....and I would tip them before you separated from them.

Got our check-in for 10:30, which seemed a bit early for Royal to offer.  Not going to be surprised if that 10:30 gets pushed back to 12:30 before we sail.  Does anyone else think 10:30 is really possible?  All five of us are fully checked-in too, which leads me to a major question.

My hubby’s vaccination card is missing - GONE.  Thankfully, he had taken a picture of it and used that for computer check-in.  Veterans Admin (where he got his shots) would not give him a replacement card and said he would have to use his medical records for proof of vaccination.  Would Royal use a phone copy of his vaccination or does it have to be the paper copy?  We cruised this past October with Royal, so we have to be in their system already.

Story for today:  Hubby, since our last October cruise, lost his vaccination card.  We have never touched it since showing it at our last cruise, so it’s a big mystery.

Hubby called the Veterans Administration, where he got his shots, to get a replacement card.  They refused to give him a card, and said he would have to use his medical records for proof of shots.

Hubby wrote the VA and got the same response.  Hubby then wrote that he was contacting the Secretary of the VA to inform him that soldiers could not get a replacement card, even though every State issued them.

Immediately, hubby got an e-mail that said a new e-mail “just” came out approving replacement cards.  His would be put in the mail.  We got a kick out of the “just got approved” statement.  We are another step closer to getting on that boat.  Pray that mean virus “peaks” this month.

Passing time waiting to find out who our Genie will be, so thought I would share a “funny” moment that happened, this time to me!

BFF and I meet a couple times a year to gossip, play cards and hit a few slot machines.  The latest time checking in to the hotel was down right painful.  Then we got to the room only to find that our room key does not work, so back down to get a replacement. Back up to our room.  We opened to the door to find “outdated”  furniture and a few spots on the floor.  Too frustrated to go all the way to the front desk again to get a new room, we decided to just wear socks….at all times.

BFF unpacks our snacks.  My job is to get ice from the ice machine.

I left  the room door AJAR, and headed down a LONG hallway to get ice, only to find a broken ice machine.  Walked back down the long hallway to my room to tell my BFF the latest.  Actually, I’m so upset,  I’m pretty much running back to the room.

I run into the room - got to the bed area - and said, “You ready for this?”

Not our room.

Got to the bed when I said, “You ready for this” then realized someone was in the bathroom.  I got out of there fast!  I keep thinking “what if” someone was in the bed, when I said:  You ready for this, and what they would have thought!  Lol

Thirty three days before we sail.  I’m trying to stay positive, which is a bit hard, with so many people getting that mean old virus.  I had it this past November, so hoping that my antibodies are still strong.  Hubby and I are cruising with three of our adult children and each of us has decided to “stay way” from crowds a couple of weeks before our sail date.  Well, all of us, except my daughter who works in an Assisted Living place.  It’s going crazy there.  I think, as a Country, we are at the top of the peak.  Just over four weeks for the virus to make its rounds and DIE.  The virus die, not you!

I’m excited about experiencing a Genie, but not sure what a Genie could really do for us.  If we sail at a really low capacity then there would be no lines.  Shows would be empty, as would restaurants.  Who knows, we may end of having all “sea” days.  We are all going with the “whatever” attitude.  I’m bringing cards and games.  Maybe, one of our games will be “who” can gain the most weight in seven days.  Maybe, I’ll try every. Single. Drink. On the ship.  Those are “maybe’s” but one thing for sure we are going to sit on our big balcony waving like England’s Royalty to all the people walking the deck below us.

So we have:  Eat, drink and wave.

Any other suggestions for the use of a Genie?

Set up a private wine tasting.  BLoody mary and mimosia bar.  We had a "drink of the day" delivered.

You are right to feel this way. I had a Genie on harmony when the guest count was 2100. I felt like you feel now......the entire sailing.  With limited shows and low pax count, you would feel like star class even in steerage. I personally felt sitting that close, with so few people in the crowd,  messed with how I perceived the sound. Don't get me wrong,  it was wonderful and definitely a magical experience. But what you get out of the experience during these times may be tempered. Be explicit. I'm so low maintenance, I too had no idea what a Genie could possibly do for me. She was worth her weight in gold when I had my testing snafu.

I followed your blog, and got the feeling that the experience of a Genie is going to be underrated.  I do wonder how this cruise is going to be made special by having a Genie.  What if a Genie gets covid, heck what if two Genie’s get covid.  Would one have to do the work of three?  I’ve read many blogs (precovid) about the Genie experience and all the benefits of having one.  Would I really need a genie to save our seats for shows, or walk us to our seats?  Besides helping you with your testing problem, how else did you benefit from a Genie?

It can be underrated if you don't use some or all of the features of having a Genie. Some of the value of booking Star Class can be quantified by taking into account the cost of the things you would pay extra for.

I tend to base it on booking a Grand Suite for the sake of making $$ comparisons. Calculate out the cost of a GS on the same ship for the same number of people and then subtract the suite daily gratuities, dining package, hibachi upcharge and beverage package from the total cost. A GS gives you the free internet. I've seen often that the delta between the SC cost and the GS isn't really that large and ultimately you will be in a nicer room and have the additional bonus of the Genie and free laundry (I don't factor this into a cost comparison as I wouldn't normally use it if I had to pay). Of course you also have to factor in the tip to the Genie since that isn't included in the daily gratuities pool.

If you're celebrating something usually the Genie will recognize that with decorating the room or setting up a party, having a cake made, etc. Some Genie's pay particular attention to details and know how to cater their services to the individual. Some people are really hands on and want to be pampered and others are hands off.

It is nice to not have to plan to show up to the show early to find seats, though when capacity is at 30% that wouldn't be much of an issue. Even with our 2100 passenger sailing on Harmony, folks in the Roll Call stated they weren't able to make ice skating reservations as times weren't available. I don't know if they tried to show up as a standby for the shows or if they knew they could even attempt that, though.

My mother keeps opting for Star Class because she likes being pampered and enjoys the exclusivity aspect of it whereas my brother and I that often sail with her would much rather fly under the radar. However it is our inheritance so we have to suck it up to get to enjoy any of it 😂. We did make good use of the minibar in the room.

It does feel that the Star Class program has changed from its beginnings. With social media it's hard to avoid the comparison of Genies and what experiences the other passengers had and it's almost become a "what can I get" experience rather than allowing the Genies to craft an individualized experience. On the flipside, if you don't give the Genie any direction or details it makes it difficult for them to read minds and craft that experience. I'm not hearing as many stories of Genies taking it upon themselves to come up with special activities or events or experiences any more. One Star Class family turned to our Facebook Roll Call group to ask what suggestions she could make for her Genie or things she could ask for that would be special for her kids because the Genie wasn't suggesting anything outside of the Adventure Ocean or if they had done the water slides yet.

Just go into it with an open mind and don't be afraid to ask for what you want. If you want to be escorted off the ship at port stops, be sure to let them know. If you want to leave the ship the final morning and walk next to your luggage, ask if that can be arranged. You want a particular seat at a restaurant or in the theater for a show, they will work their magic to make that happen the best that they can.

@Yesiamthere In my case the testing was the truest experience I had with the Genie. The minibar was great but the other perks weren't as pronounced because limited shows and offerings. The price point was nice but if it was more I would have been very disappointed. But I have to consider it was 2 Genies doing the job of 3

It is also very true what Ashley said. But I'm super lowkey. I actually prefer to sit towards the back. Especially now when capacity is so low that when they perform, you can't hear them enunciate enough to enjoy. I don't like to be paraded about or preen upon. There is value if you want all things and imho are high maintenance. You also need to take into account who is traveling.

Star class wouldn't be worth it for my family as my brother is the only heavy drinker. Other than the bar provided in the room, I had at max 3 drinks. Since I am diamond now, and only got my 4 drinks once on a 4n cruise, I don't need a drink package. So it comes down to attention: do you want to be first to board, walked into restaurants/shows, have the crew fawn over you even more than they do, and lastly are you already paying suite prices?

I personally think the value was lost on me because there was nothing I really wanted the Genie to do and capacity was so low, even stretched because of a down Genie,  there wasn't enough to do. Right now prices aren't too bad, so it's a good time to try.

I tried to sell my brother on star class but none of my family spend much time in the rooms no matter where or how we travel. They are okay with interiors. That's their thing, we could all get our own room, a 3/4 device internet package and the UDP and still come out ahead of star class. They joke I'm always on it, so we would get an early boarding time🤣. Even after the pictures and my talk up, star class won't happen again for me unless I join someone from this board. I am okay just enjoying my room, which most star class rooms are made for. But my family prefers to be constantly doing or seeing something. Truth be told unless I pay for the bougie, I have to lower my standards when I am with them.

The silver lining is we got the room on a casino discount.  Five of us are going much cheaper than if did balconies.  If I was paying full price, or even a high price, I would cancel.  It wouldn’t be worth the dollars.  I can’t imagine paying a normal price and having to share our genie even more if the ship got down to two!  The three adult kids going are expecting “great” service.  They want breakfast in the room and snacks/drinks delivered on demand.  They are much more “needy” than hubby and I.  Hubby doesn’t like to be waited on…..well, I take that back.  He likes me to “wait” on him…..but, that’s a story for another time.  Thank you for sharing your experience.  I will definitely lower my expectations even more. Hopefully, the weather will be nice.  Lots of snow and cold weather here in Kentucky.

Four weeks until I’m on the plane!  When should I hear something from our Genie?

If you are in the star class Facebook group....I recommend staying away from the page when the 30 days approaches because people may post how they got their genie assignment while you are still waiting for yours......creating unimaginable FOMO.......not that I know from personal experience.......

I got our Genie assignment, Nicol Torcende.  My daughter found a video he posted.  He seems like he will be a really good fit for our group.

The email said some benefits and services have temporality adjusted.  Sounds like we need to book before boarding all our dining, which I assume we tell him where and when we would like to eat.  I was thinking just sending where we don’t want to eat and let him set the rest up for us.  He recommended we go to cruise planners to look at the activities.  We need to make our check-in time, which we have already done.  Suites allow an hour earlier boarding.  There’s an long PDF file about “what not to pack” that I’ll get around to reading.

I’m so excited!  It’s right around the corner.  Twenty eight more showers then we are on the boat!!

Has anyone heard anything about our Genie, Nicol?

Should be in safe hands. If I recall correctly he was trained by Alan Rodriguez.

From the communication chain with our Genie on Harmony the biggest impact was Chef's Table and Izumi Hibachi asking to be booked in advance. My hunch the main reason is these restaurants truly have limited seating and the Genie can't make additional seats appear. The Genie can fit in the other restaurants easily in advance.

Mostly it is common sense "what not to pack" items... No handcuffs, extension cords, hot plates, flare guns, car batteries, etc...

Thanks so much…guess, I’ll have to leave my handcuffs at home!  🙂  Also, thanks for the “heads up” regarding Chefs table and the Hibachi, as those are the two main restaurants the groups wants to go to.

It's usually no problem for the Genie to get you in for Chef's Table and hibachi, but if you have a specific date/time you want they may ask for you to reserve online and they'll refund as OBC once onboard. Also let Nicol know of any allergies, food likes and dislikes and if you're celebrating any special occasions while onboard.

Just got a short reply with an automated list of stuff from the Genie.  No mention of the one question that I asked of him.  I’m o.k. With that as he is busy with the people on the ship now.  The automated part talked about Chef’s table and Hibachi restaurants and how they cannot make reservations until one day out now.  I’ve seen on other ships that the Chef of the Hibachi had to be quarantined for two weeks because he was exposed to the virus.  We would like to do Chef’s table, without the wine.  He said that we would pay $25.00, plus 18%  gratuity for the wine addition. Money is not the issue but the glass after glass of wine is.  They would have to carry me out after drinking all that. 🙂

The email also stated where to find the star class entrance, and he would meet us on the second level to take us to our room.  Keep our luggage with us to the second level.

Also stated was he would not be allowed in our room, and we should contact him by phone when we needed something.  He would give us his phone number after boarding. It really stressed that the Genie would have limited physical contact with us.

He will let us know when the shows for the cruise are announced.  I’m thinking we really are not going to know is a show is a go until we are actually sitting and watching the show.  We got to be flexible. 🙂

I’m trying to stay positive but Covid has really sucked out most of the excitement.  But it is what it is.

It is so weird how they keep changing the way Genie's interact. Alexa came in our room. I have also heard of other Genies doing the same. Hopefully it is just a formality because it would suck not being able to have them come in and plan with you.

The email from our original Genie on Harmony stated the same thing about them not being able to come in the room, as did the email from Alan on Allure. It's a formality but they don't seem to be sticking to it as long as the guests are comfortable with the Genie coming into their space. When Alexa sat with us in Wonderland for a second and we invited her to stay, she politely declined stating she wasn't allowed to because of the current protocols. It was completely different with Alan on Allure, so probably will be a different experience for every set of passengers from here on out.

Yikes !  We would have one very unhappy  husband if this happened to us !  Sorry to hear it.  I’m sure they will claim it to be a COVID casualty but that’s a bit spurious to me.

A bit silly to me too!  I do feel for the Genies.  Not their fault, and I’m hoping it’s not having an effect on their tips.  It’s gotta be hard to personalize their services when Royal has cut everything out except dinning and drinking.  I’m sure Genies are having to become quite creative with their services.  That all said, it is what it is.  We are still excited - mainly for warmer weather!!

Keep this in the back of your mind as well….  The Genie (and Concierge, for that matter) will always give you a “by the book” answer in writing.  Same with a phone call or text.  Once you get on the ship and meet with your Genie face-to-face, they will display a bit more flexibility.  So while they might give you some bad news in advance it might change once you get onboard.  Not saying it will, but it could.

I’m so excited.  Royal just released that they are relaxing their rules after February 15th.  Sounds like they are going back to the level when we sailed this past October, which was awesome.  No more mask in the casino, shows, and comedy club.  They stated that their cases have been going down, which is a good sign for cruising to get back to normal!!

Wow!  Email from Royal said “masks” are “optional.”  We only have to wear them to board and disembark.  This is amazing and is a strong sign that cruising is getting so much closer to normal!!  We will be the first group on Allure to sail under the new guidance.  I’m curious to see how many people will still choose to wear a mask.

As of tomorrow we will be on the Allure in exactly one week!!

Five negative tests, packed and ready for our airplane ride to Florida tomorrow.

I had “high” hopes of losing lots of weight before our cruise and failed.  I’m at (a high for me) 137 pounds, but that’s not going to stop me from eating what I want when I want.  I’ll let you know how much weight I gained.  I did pack a pair of grandma stretchy pants….just in case breathing becomes a problem.  I do love to walk but I do love milkshakes too.  It’s been a battle every since I hit middle age.

I’m curious how the “masks optional” is going to work.  What percent will wear them?  I’ll keep you. Informed.  I’m going to try and post everyday.  Try is the key word.  I’m sure there will be lots of posts about what happens in the “casino.”  Hopefully, one of my kids will show me how to post pictures.  If so, watch out for all those casino pictures!!

Rumor has it we will be sailing at 70 to 75% capacity.  I’m fine with that because we will have a Genie!  Excited to try the whole star experience. Sunday morning we board around 10:45.

It’s my turn folks.  🙂
