Old Woman meets a real life Genie — Allure of the Seas STAR class — Feb. 27th, 2022.

I’ve been catching up about Star Class for over a year now.  One of the first blogs I read had @Lovetocruise2002writing that she wasn’t sure “what” she would ask of a Genie.  Fast forward to her adjusting just fine to Star Class!  I’ll say upfront that I love reading her blogs - she has a gift for writing.  While I’m at it let me shout out kudos to @WAAAYTOOOwho may not win any “live”  blogging awards (she tells the reader upfront that she will do the majority of writing after the cruise)  but is a wonderful source of information and just down right sweet!   You all are the reason I’m at least a “suite” snob now.  And, because of some of you, I now book the cruise first then explain to hubby on “how” I saved him money by booking the cruise.  He is still shaking his head!

I booked this Star class cruise over a year ago through the Casino.  When the lady told me the price for an eighth floor two bedroom Aqua suite I was stunned.  I had her repeat the price a couple more times.  Cheaper than us booking balcony rooms.  The catch was I had to pay the full balance right then and there.  Moments like this is the reason God invented American Express.

Who is going:  Hubby, three kids in their 20’s and 30’s and myself.  Hubby is a retired military man, worked years as a Director with Lockheed Martin and is now on his third career - a Financial Advisor.  It’s painful having your financial advisor be your husband too.  I’m guessing it would be like being married to a doctor who advises you that you really should lose ten pounds.  It all becomes a bit more personal.

The kids have spent the last year making a list of all the things the Genie could do for them.  Hubby said he had nothing on his list.  He could do what he wanted for himself.  It’s amazing that he has not made the connection that he has had a genie (me) for many many years and has no problem with that.  I’m having a bit of trouble thinking “what” I would like a Genie to do for me. I’m the type that always has her room steward take a couple of days off.  I get clean towels for those days and they are not allowed to enter my room.  The kids seem to think that I will adjust just fine with the services of a Genie.  I’m going to give it my best to sit back and let the Genie be a Genie.  I’m old and do deserve a bit of being “spoiled”  after years and years of making sure everyone had clean underwear.  Thousands and thousands pairs of underwear.

The kids and I (minus hubby) are getting excited that it’s just two months from sailing.  Our fear is CDC tries to flex it’s muscles and shuts down cruising again.  Could that happen?

I’m listening to @WAAAYTOOOon filling out the genie questionnaire, and just answer a couple of important questions.  Originally, we were going to throw out a request to have dinner with the Captain, but with covid, that’s just not going to be a possibility.  It seems on cruises happening now that a lot of shows are being cancelled, and to top it off, our sailing is no longer showing on their site.  Do you think that means they reached their capacity for passengers?

If you are bored tomorrow then visit this site as I will be posting on why the “Old Woman’s hubby”  is not a fan of cruising.  I will say now it might have a bit to do to his two visits to Royal’s medical facilities on the same cruise.

Thanks for joining me and for any advice for my upcoming Star cruise.  You all rock!

*A big thank you to Matt and this site.  It’s truly a place to go to to get answers!

Looking forward to your report!  We have a 2 br ats booked in March and it’ll be interesting to see what happens in next 3 months.

Hopefully, by our cruises the virus will have already peaked.  It’s hard to mentally plan when we don’t really know what will be expected.  That said, I’m going to go with a “whatever” attitude and know that I’ll have a wonderful balcony to enjoy.  Have you ever stayed in the two bedroom Aqua suite?

WOOHOO !  So excited for you.  Yes, those casino rates are addictive.  Deck 8 ATS is soooooo nice.

Hubby and I would like to have dinner in our room (or, balcony) one night.  Rumor has it that the Aqua suites are so far removed from restaurants.  If that is so, should we even attempt for dinner room service?  Would the food be cold?

They do bring out all of the food at once, so it tends to cool off if you're eating through appetizers, entrees and then desserts.  It really depends on what you are ordering.  We've really enjoyed taking advantage of eating on the balcony during an aquatheater show, so we don't mind the tradeoff.  I actually enjoy having all of the courses available at once so I don't have to wait!

I have read others complain about food being cold when delivered to the ATS but that was never our experience.  @AshleyDillois correct about them delivering everything at once....and frankly, I would rather have that situation than have someone coming in and out trying to serve a coursed meal (which I'm sure the would NOT do in today's world, anyway).  Our favorite meal to eat outside was breakfast....and breakfast food (for us, anyway) is far less dependent on "courses" than other meals.  We just kinda eat everything together at once.  Plus, it is still cool enough outside (usually) to eat in the AM but by evening that space can be sooooo hot (depending upon sun exposure/direction).

I would definitely recommend that you try it...whether it's dinner, lunch or breakfast.  That enormous balcony with that huge dining table is perfect for enjoying a nice meal outdoors. ...and if you find that it's just too hot to eat out there, you can always move inside b/c there's a dining table and chairs inside, too !!

This will be our first time!  Just like you, I have to thank @WAAAYTOOOand @Lovetocruise2002for getting me hooked on SC

Our last cruise on Allure we stayed on Deck 17 and asked for our entire dinner to be delivered.  It came all at once, and it was "warm", not hot as it would have been in the restaurants.  We try to steer clear of in room dining for dinner because of this very reason but were tired that night and wanted to relax so we gave it a try.

Thank you.  I just re-read your Allure Aqua suite (same room I booked) blog.  It was a wonderful wealth of information and I love your writing style.  Your mom is a hoot!  Then again, I’m thinking my kids have a few “hoot” things to say about me too!  Please let me know, as we get closer to February, any tidbits about sailing Star Class on the Allure.  Ultimate goal is for me to have all the answers when my kids ask a question.  Lol

Oh my.  Just got my Genie questionnaire. Isn’t it a bit early to get it?  When do I find out who my Genie will be?  I’m so excited.  It feels more “real” now.

Usually about 45-60 days out for the questionnaire and about a month before for the Genie assignment!

I'll be on Oasis the week before you in a 2brATS. I will be blogging it as well. I have not started mine because like @Lovetocruise2002said in her last one, I don't want to jinx it. We got our genie questionnaire a week or two ago and have been slowly working our way through it. We too will probably skip some of the weird questions as well. I look forward to following along with yours as it might help soften the post cruise blues.

Initially, I wasn’t going to start mine until two weeks from cruise date because of the teasing Lovetocruise2002 got for her little earlier blog start.  But now that people are starting a year or later out I figured I would be o.k.  🙂  I was feeling really good about my upcoming cruise but after reading today blogs with titles like “Will CDC shut down cruising again” I’m feeling a bit apprehensive about it all.  I’ll definitely be following your blog, especially since it is the week before mine.

Oh, the teasing was all in good fun, because she had much earlier blogs with even earlier starts. I'm more worried of starting the blog, then finding out the week before the cruise.....oh crap, one of us got COVID and can't go now. Both my wife and I work in health care, she's a nurse, and I am a firefighter paramedic, so we are over here dodging COVID like crazy. I think we will be spending the next 47 days like this....

Wow - you two are in prime positions.  I got covid two weeks before Thanksgiving.  Still trying to figure out exactly where I got it.  Before I knew it I gave it to my hubby and my oldest son who gave it to most of his family.  My symptoms were just like a bad cold with exhaustion for a few days.  Lucky it never went to my lungs at all.  The five of us that are going have decided that if one of us tested positive the rest would go (except me and my hubby if one of us tested positive) as we live in different States and would have not been around each other.  I’m actually glad now that I got covid in November.  I’m hoping that will supply me with some extra antibodies.

Why my hubby is not a fan of cruising:

Background information on hubby:  West Point graduate in Aerospace Engineering. Sounds like a get down “party” person, doesn’t it?

Hubby put up with Old White Woman’s desire to cruise for a lot of years now.  He knew after he went to war in Iraq, which was  the same year our twenty year old college student was a medic in Afghanistan, that he owed me.  So off to cruises we went.  We would coexist at night on our cruise. I would hit the casino.  He would retire to read.  He never understood the desire to “pay” to “hit” a button with the hope he would win, at least, his money back.  I, on the other hand, still remember when many years ago I won $49,300 on a .75 cent bet.  That win brought a life long addiction to believing lightening could strike twice to me.  Before you start to send me gambling addiction material do realize I’m totally exaggerating - not about the $49,300 win but ever playing more than “fun” money…..well, and a bit of “un fun” money.  🙂

Now back to what caused hubby to dislike cruising even more than what he was born with.  He knows marriage is a “give and take” so he still packs his bags and goes, but after what happened two years ago on a Royal ship, he now mumbles a bit more. After reading what happened, do you think he deserves to mumble?

We were seated with two single ladies for dinner in the dining room.  Nice table with a window view.  Great conversation.  While eating dessert, hubby looked uncomfortable while chewing.  He puts his finger in his mouth and out came a piece of “glass” and a bloody finger.  I thought the older women table mates were going to “pass out.”  Glass in the dessert cut the inside of his mouth.  After I took a picture of the glass and his bloody finger - staff members quickly removed the glass from sight.  No apologies - no nothing.  Like it never even happened.  Hubby had to go to medical where they gave him stuff for his mouth.  Not once did someone say…..wow, we are so sorry……that’s the first time that’s ever happened.  After telling our waiter the next night how disappointed we were out came a bottle of wine which hubby said, “no thank you.”

Hubby never complained about the cut in his mouth because Army Rangers just don’t complain that much.  So, we continued to enjoy our cruise until hubby ended back into ship’s medical due to another mishap. Two in one cruise.

Before I share about hubby’s next trip to Royal’s medical, I’m going to share a funny story, that happened between hubby’s accidents.

Hubby and I shared a table with two single women for dinner in the dining room.  They were a bit older than “Old White Woman.”  Our table was a nice four topper right by a window looking out at the ocean.  It was nice, but not really a great deal, because once it gets dark you are looking out into darkness.  But that’s a story for another time.

The two women sharing our table were the type that waited for the dining doors to open  because they had a “thing” about being the first people seated.  So, hubby and I, did find it a bit “odd” that they were not already seated when we arrived to our table for dinner.  We were also stunned that the bread from the basket was warm.  Previous nights, the bread basket contained bread that was the temperature of its last home.  Hubby and I quickly ate our piece of warm bread and grabbed another. By this time, our waiter showed up to get our drink orders.  He looked a bit confused as we answered.  Hubby and I figured he must be filling in for our normal waiter and having a hard time adjusting to a new table in the middle of the cruise.

Just when I finished buttering another piece of warm bread, my hubby out of nowhere said:  Old White Woman we are at the wrong table.  I told him he must of had too much bourbon because here’s the wall we sit against and there’s the ocean to our side.

Hubby said we were at the right table but at the right table on the “wrong” floor.

After a quick discussion about whether I should leave the buttered warm bread and whether we should attempt to “clean up” the table we decided to leave the “crime” scene fast - with the bread.

Part two:  First my husband found glass in his dessert then he was attacked in the dining room.

Before the attack on my hubby, the dining room had quickly become his “unfavorite” place to go.  Who could blame him after suffering a mouth injury due to glass in his food, then the embarrassment of us sitting and breaking bread at the right table, but the right table on the wrong floor.  We decided to go because we were hungry and the food was included in our cruise fare.  After the last two nights of “what the heck” what could possibly happen.  Odds were on our side that we would enjoy a meal without injury or embarrassment.

Hubby hates to be the “center” of attention.  If was because of me that the crew knew that hubby had cut his mouth on a piece of glass.  Hubby would have used his napkin to stop the bleeding, washed his mouth with water and swallowed, and continued to eat in pain and not say a word.

Dinner was going great.   Right table.  Right wait staff.  Right table mates.  No foreign objects in our food.  That night was a successful meal in our book. But it was when we were making our way out of the dining room is when it turned into “survival of the fittest.”

Hubby and I were walking close to the wall as we made our way through the dining room.  Just before we were to round the corner to head out of the dining room, a group of people were bypassing us to enter, so we had to move even closer to the wall.  (Now we might be old enough to be @lovetocruise2002’s parents but we are fast walkers).  As we rounded the corner, hubby ran right into a chair.  Not those little dining room chairs, but a “big ass” chair that was stacked side by side with other big ass chairs..  The collision stopped hubby right in his tracks. The chair did not move an inch.   Staff came to see if he was o.k.  Apparently, hubby, was not the first person to have a “run in” with the chairs.  Staff said she did not know “why” the chairs were placed “where you would only see them after you collided with them”

Hubby acted like nothing happened and we left.  After watching him walk I had to force him to show me his leg.  Ouch, folks.  The chair got him smacked down the front bone of his leg.  More blood.  Back to medical.  More medicine.

Security comes to medical.  Security has us go back to the dining room to show him hubby’s attacker.  Security said:  “Wow, that’s a stupid place to put those kind of chairs.”  Chairs then found a new home where they could be “free” to be a “chair” and not an “attacker.”

After a few hours, hubby started feeling the pain and I had him take whatever the heck it was they gave him.  I felt really bad for him.  It was obvious while he was eating dinner that he was trying to avoid chewing on the side of the mouth with the big cut from the glass   Now he was walking with a limp.

Royal offered us $200 off our next cruise taken within the next year.  We didn’t use their offer but we continued to cruise with them.  Hubby and I laugh about that cruise now but I think he might be “fake laughing” a little.  We have both been around many blocks many times and know that “shit happens” which reminds me of the time when I was walking back to my room on Royal’s cruise ship and noticed “shit” on the floor.  It followed me from the stairs, half way down a long hall way then stopped two doors from mine.  I would rather be attacked by a chair then “see” and “smell” that accident again.  But it was a funny story that I’ll share soon to help me “fill in the pages” because I started my blog (due to excitement) way too early.

Thanks for following!

*Hoping to be able to post a picture of hubby’s leg injury.  There’s definitely a “gross” element to it!

Wow - four Royal ships out of service for a bit.  Shocking one was Symphony of the Seas.  Sounds like it was too many crew testing positive.  It was sad to read about people finding out their cruise was cancelled while getting their baggage at the airport.   Our fear, at this end, is Allure will have too many cases the week before we sail.  If so, would that mean no sailing the next week too?  If I booked under casino rate for a 2 bedroom aqua suite would there be anyway of rebooking an Aqua suite for the same price?

I’m so sad that I haven’t filled out the Genie questionnaire that I was so excited to receive.

Pretty much.

You can always ask for a casino rate on any cruise.  Sometimes they are reasonably good deals and sometimes they are not much of anything.  They will almost always give you SOMEthing from the casino.  For 2021, 2022 and 2023 I got a lot of 5% off casino discounts.  5% isn't that much BUT they do let you stack your Crown & Anchor discounts on top and sometimes you can even stack things like state or military discounts (but not very often).

Obviously, if you can find another sailing that is offering a casino comp you can book that one, but the cost of your upgrade will be at whatever the prevailing rate is.  Keep checking the clubroyaleoffers.com.  I have been getting a LOT of offers lately but they are crappy little 3-4-5 night cruises.  There were a couple of 7-nighters on Harmony in there for late April and early May but there were no suites available (I checked even though I knew I wouldn't book anything).

The ONE and ONLY time I ever got a casino comp moved was during the shuffle a few months ago when they were moving the Indy cruises over to Odyssey....and then they cancelled the first few of those OY sailings so they cancelled my booking completely and I ended up getting money back.

When is your cruise? What ship?   I’m sad but still in the “firmly going” group too.  If they cancel us (like they just did Symphony of the Seas) while we are getting our baggage at the airport then we are going to do a Florida trip.  It’s gotta be warmer than here in Kentucky!

Oasis Feb 20th. We are crazy and driving from NY to FL, so hopefully if it does get cancelled, its a few days prior and not while we are in the middle of Georgia!

Is it possible to ask for a tablecloth for outside table for our in room breakfast?  Thanks so much!

Sure, request might be better suited once the Genie has reach out. Also, if I'm recalling room service normally brought a tablecloth and set the table every morning automatically.  Now with the surge, protocols might be a bit stricter and adhered too.

Worst case, you can request one when arranging your breakfast order with the Genie.

My thoughts on the questionnaire are fairly well known so I won't rehash that, at this point.  But I agree with @CGTLH...those kinds of details (tablecloths, etc.) are something that will need to be discussed with the Genie closer to an actual meal !  I have actually had pretty poor luck with getting table cloths for meals (b/c I would fail to ask for one !).  The most thorough Genie we ever had for such things was Charlie (no longer a Genie, unfortunately).  He would come into the suite before we got back from the casino, lay out the table for us, make cute little hand-made place cards....a really nice table setting.  He would also show back up when it was time to clean up and help room service to get it all taken away.  Just be sure and ask for a table cloth when you order the meal.

I have also discussed the fact that SC tend to be VERY popular...and it seems like there are constant doorbells and phones ringing.  One of the things that we now do is to ask the Genie to please try and minimize the disruptions.  This may not be as much of a problem now as it was BC...which would be a GOOD thing.  This might be something to mention in the questionnaire as well as to discuss with the Genie once you meet in person.

If you want to keep your luggage with you throughout the boarding process (something that will NOT happen unless you ask for it), the questionnaire would be a good time to mention that and then again once you begin direct comm with the Genie.  If you are in a 2-level suite (sorry, I cannot recall what suite you are going to be in), you will want to have your luggage delivered upstairs.  If you allow yourself to be separated from your luggage, you will most likely not arrive at the suite at the same time and trust me....no one will take it upstairs for you !  If you're in an ATS, this isn't as important.  I always laugh when I see that photo of Reyno carrying that suitcase up the stairs in the RLS.  HA !  No way will the Genie do that for you !  You'll be lucky to get the porter to do it.

I'm sure there are other things I'm forgetting but truly, the questionnaire is not important.  Your direct comm with the Genie most definitely IS.

Thanks!  I’ll mention to our Genie then again when we place our room service order.  A table cloth makes the whole experience a bit fancy, which I do not do at home!  🙂
