Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

We are going on this on the Jan 17th cruise.  There doesn't seem to be many excursions.   Can anyone help in suggestions for these 3 ports whether thru RCL or on your own?  I looked at a past cruise compass and Mazatlan golf was recommended in the daily compass.  Has anyone done that?

LA cruises justed started up on Nov. 19 but only the 7 night cruises reach these ports.  The first cruise from LA on Nov. 19 has been the only 7 night cruise to date so there haven't been a lot of people visiting these ports on Royal yet.

@Matt will be cruising there in the coming weeks (I think) so follow the blog main page to see what he reports.

Thanks for the response and I'll watch out for Matt's trip.  I'm coming from NJ so I'm not familiar with that part of Mexico.   But I could not resist the Free MyVegas cruise.  But in reality, not free after a visit to the casino!! Just became Diamond so I'm looking forward to it.

Congratulations on Diamond, that's a great accomplishment!

We were on the 7 night 11/19 cruise.

In Cabo we did the snorkeling excursion through Royal. That was fun.

Mazatlan we went off on our own to Stone Island. Great relaxing day and the water taxi to get there is a short walk from the ship. Lots of beach restaurants to choose from with lounge chairs and cheap eats.

Puerto Vallarta we went on our own to one of the boardwalk areas. Took a taxi both ways for $5 each. Hung out on beach chairs in front of a hotel and had snacks and drinks. The salespeople on the beach were constant though.

Like you said, not alot of choices through Royal Caribbean. I did hear someone say Salsa Salsa Margarita was pretty fun.

Navigator was fantastic though!

Thank you very much for the recap.   It's appreciated.  We sometimes do the RCL excursions and sometimes we go on our own.

We’re taking this itinerary in a couple weeks and from our research, it seems like Cabo is for the beaches and Vallarta is for the shopping. Not sure about Mazatlan yet. We’ll probably just go on our own without the traditional shore excursions.

My wife and I like to golf, so I'm contacting the courses and we might just do things on our own as well.  Enjoy your trip.  If you don't mind replying back to let me know how it went.  We are looking to see how easy it is to get off the ship and thru customs.  On adventure a couple of weeks ago, it took maybe 10 minutes to get off the ship and thru customs to my car which was only feet away.  For this LA trip, we have a noon flight from Long Beach which I know i'm cutting it close.

thanks,
Bob

This is too late for OP, but thought I’d share for others. We just spent a week in Cabo and one day did a short boat tour with Roger’s sea sports. https://www.rogerstourboatcabomexico.com/. We had a great experience.  That day, we just wanted to go out to the Arco, but next year we plan to book several more experiences with them. They offer lots of fun activities on and off the water.

It was four of us on the boat with a captain, a guide, and a photographer. We were only charged for a group tour even though it was just us. ($80 total for about 90 minutes) We learned a lot about the marina and the area all around the Arch.  The boat had small glass windows in the bottom - not really a glass bottom boat, but didn’t matter to me - we stopped near the snorkel area and were able to see a ton of fish both under the boat and on either side. The guide identified them for us  The captain positioned the boat for multiple great photo ops, and the photographer sent me a link to all the full resolution photos he took (about 100) in exchange for an Instagram review. When we spotted a whale spout towards the end of the trip, the captain turned around took us out to the whale for a few minutes. Just overall a super fun, easy going morning.

Thanks for the reports.  I've thought so many times of doing a Mexican Riviera cruise.  Living in Oregon, a little 2-hour flight to Los Angeles  would sure be easy.

So, I'm always interested to hear folks' experiences on such a cruise, until I do it for myself.🌴

I also heard great things about Salsa Salsa Margarita... a couple of friends went and had a great time.  Traveling solo I tried out the RC tours that tour the city (sorry, I can't remember the names).  Neither was too bad, learned a bit about Mazatlan and Puerta Vallerta.  Being the first cruise there just wasn't much info on the excursions, and honestly none of them "wowed" me.  If I had to take the cruise again, I would definitely go out on my own like San Diego Garrett did or would look at some of the private tour operators.

We're heading out on this cruise in a few weeks out of LA (January 20, 2023). Has anyone done the horseback riding excursion in Puerto Vallarta or the Deer Island (beach, kayak, hike) Adventure in Mazatlan?  We booked both of these and hope they are wonderful! We're going off on our own in Cabo and hoping to make an afternoon scuba diving boat that leaves shortly after we arrive there - risky given what I've read about the tender times but I'm hoping we get lucky!

We did this cruise for Christmas last year. I didn’t do any of the excursions you mentioned but wanted to say that it’s whale season there and I highly suggest you try to fit that in. You can even see them from the ship, bring binoculars. We saw whales on both excursions in Cabo and puerto Vallarta but PV was better. The female was slapping her fin for attention and there were males breaching all around her. One of the most incredible sites we’ve ever seen. We loved PV so much we went back in July for my daughters sweet 16 and spent a week there and got to see bioluminescence. Such a beautiful city!
