smokeybandit
I'm sure they don't know. They're looking very closely at the rates of vaccination for that age group once this initial push is over. There are concerns (I think the NYT even had an article) that a good many vaccinated parents are quite hesitant to vaccinate their 5-11 yr olds WAAAYTOOO

He sees a day soon when every cruise will have 95% vax so no masks needed. Up to this point we are all wearing masks on board because there are children present who are unvax. If enough kids get vaxxed they'll start dropping mask requirements on that sailing. They have typically been in the low 90s as a vax rate on most cruises. Given how kids are low in numbers all it will take is a handful of them vaxxed and it will tip the scales so masks can come off. The TA and Investor cruise for Odyssey inaugural was mask free. Only 4 kids on board.

L454S
Someone above mentioned that Royal has it's ships catered more towards "family" sailing. I agree that the kids being vaccinated has everything to do with protocols. We have found a way with T/A's and some other sailings to have a more adult experience. We just cancelled two more sailings for January now that Royal extended their mandates through March, have only a few more booked through 2022. Will wait and see, haven't had a mask on in over 6 months, still won't pay to wear one. fireclan, ctigerk, Snowchaser and 4 others 2 2 1
WAAAYTOOO
Quick update on the ability to cancel for a cash refund on these cruises. So far, indications are that they will honor a cash refund on all 8 of our cruises through 3-31-22. Since some of them are casino bookings @michelleis having to go through them to facilitate the refunds but we have no indication that they won't refund in cash so it's looking good. I really hate having to cancel all of these bookings - many of them are Empress L&S and were dirt cheap but that's just the way it is. So I'm taking my money while I can. If, by some miracles, vax protocols change between now and then I will rebook if I feel so inclined. Once we fall off the casino program as Prime members we will have no real reason to stay with Royal Caribbean exclusively. We'll be free agent then ! My kids pediatrician has already recommended against vaccinating my kids 7, 8yo so mine won't be unless his recommendation changes. I'm going to assume he's not the only one recommending against kids in that age range being vaccinated. I imagine at some point RC lowers the age since the AAP recommends the shot. My Ped said it was up to us and that is what most of my friends got too from their Ped.
Jverge
The decision to require vaccination or kids 5-11 won't be made by Royal Caribbean but by the countries/ports they visit. IzzyB
IzzyB
My friend said that Carnival also just released protocols into March too. She is going on a cruise in March with her family and the cousin is not vaccinated and so the cousin is going to get vaccinated to be able to go on the cruise now that it was announced thru March. So I wonder if this is more industry wide that they are going out to March? I am thinking the cruise ships will follow in packs for a lot of this stuff.
