Voom Starting Halfway Through Cruise

Recommended Posts

I have a 5 day cruise starting on Friday. I don't really need the internet package until Monday, when I need to make plane reservations for my next vacation. Is it possible to go to guest service and sign up for the internet starting Monday until the end of the cruise? Maybe just sign up for the internet for Sunday only?

This has long been part of my "day two strategy" to buying Voom.  On day one you are often in port until 5 or 6pm.  Then there is dinner, then a show.  Why buy it on day one when you only get a few hours of use?  By buying it on day two or three you save quite a bit of money.

I have seen the pricing change right at midnight and I have seen change at 10pm the night before.  I don't know for sure but I think the Voom specialist has to make the daily change and some are more aggressive than others.  I also seen where it hadn't yet changed at 6am the next morning.  However it will change eventually, every day.

Does it usually go up or down as the cruise progresses?

The daily rate remains fixed.  The "Full Voyage" price is a sum of the remaining days @ the fixed daily rate.

On board the price for Surf and Stream is usually around $31.99 per day, Surf is $25.99.

With three days left the price would 3 x $31.99 for Surf and Stream = $95.97 less any discounts for your C&A level, or for Surf it would 3 x $25.99 = $68.97 less any C&A discounts for your level.

With 2 days left this would be 2 x $31.99 for Surf and Stream = $63.98 or 2 x $25.99 for Surf = $51.98.

C&A discounts are:

Gold - 10%

Platinum and Emerald - 15%

Diamond - one day of Surf or $25.99 off a full voyage package

Diamond Plus - two days of Surf or $51.98 off a full voyage package

So a Diamond Plus could wait until there are 3 days left and pay $95.97 less $51.98 = $43.99 for Surf and Stream for the remainder of the voyage.

Also remember if you are a Diamond or Diamond Plus the day(s) of free Voom are per person so technically a Diamond couple could have two days of free Voom. We used our free day this last week to check-on to our December cruise while we were out at sea. We have the same thing coming up in a couple of weeks and we will use one day to check-in to our next cruise in January and the other day for checking into our flight back home.

You aren’t really saving much or anything at all buying it on day two onboard compared to buying for the whole trip pre-cruise since the pre-cruise daily rate is lower…

It can depend on the pre-cruise price in the cruise planner and how many free days you have, if any. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy in advance and sometimes it's cheaper not to. I have a copy of a fantastic price comparison chart created by @twangster that lets me see exactly where the sweet point is for any given cruise.

When it's $18.39 or higher pre-cruise for a 7 night cruise you can save depending on your C&A level.

For Emerald and lower you are generally better buying it in the cruise planner in advance.

Diamond and Diamond Plus need to look at it for shorter cruises especially on the 3/4 short Florida cruises.

Also a D or D+ couple can use their free days in a joint manner to stretch them out further if they can tolerate having only device logged in at a time.

Lastly, D or D+ families with children that don't need Voom can leverage their kids free days too.
