Kind of a strange statement to release. On a day that their passenger pool just grew, they aren't saying "welcome back families!" but are saying "we aren't changing anything so live with it"

Well, I think they're saying "welcome back vaccinated families"

agree and if I was still sailing with children in the "now able to be vaccinated" range that would easily make it my cruise line of choice.

As much as I like Royal Caribbean, it is the choice of least risk.

The letter doesn't mention anything about the 5-11 stuff though or even hint at it.

It just says they're extending their protocols

In their Sail Safe FAQ, "Are children allowed to sail if they are not not vaccinated?"

... minors who have not yet been eligible to be vaccinated will not be permitted to sail on these voyages. Minors who meet the eligibility requirements set by FDA/WHO and/or EMA and who have been fully vaccinated are welcome to sail.

Looks like they're "making it mandatory" without really saying it, if you want to take your kids along.

Honestly if my son was 5 not 4, we would be doing a NCL over RC.  But he is 9 months shy of 5 and so we are doing RC so he can join the 4 of us (2 adults and 2 kids who will be fully vaxed by December cruise) on our cruise.  The ability to be on a fully vaxed cruise with no masks sounds very appealing to many of us.  I know of friends who are now able to get their last child vaxed as they are 5+ looking into NCL and Carnival.

Did NCL choose wisely? I think not…

NCL chose to risk losing loyal and new customers alike by intending to create what they believed to be the safest cruise environment available…they did that with their 100% vaccination requirement, thus alienating cruisers with children who were unable to be vaccinated. They also received free publicity by suing Florida over their mandate. So far, so good…..

But…looking at the CDC cruise ship color code chart today, NCL has four ships approved for restricted (passenger) sailings. As of today, three of the four have reported cases of Covid onboard. Two of them are in yellow status, which means the number of cases have met the threshold for CDC investigation. The other is in orange status, the number reported is below the investigation threshold and the CDC is monitoring.

Royal has fifteen ships approved for restricted sailings. Seven have reported cases onboard. Only two are in yellow status.

Lots of litigation and bluster…”Our ships have propellers and rudders and we can move them anywhere”…apparently was not the best strategy in servicing your loyal clientele…. Oh, well…just my opinion.

This is becoming a game of Whac-A-Mole as the ever changing rules of the CDC/FDA continue as the die-hard cruisers fight through the maze of ever-changing rules. It's now down to 5 year olds, oh not good enough - now #3 shot for boosters this year, nope not good enough, #4 and now your not-yet born baby must be given a shot 😆...where does it all end?  But, we just blissfully follow the ever-changing rules so we can get on a ship to float around the Caribbean with a drink in our hands.

I also went to CDC website this past week and SHOCKER……the 100% vaccinated cruises are no better than Royal.

Newsflash: it’s not always unvaccinated kids getting the virus.

We had 1 Covid case on Symphony 3 weeks ago in a fully vaccinated adult.

Royal’s protocols are working and are currently the most inclusive of all the lines. I personally see no reason to mandate vaccines for 5-11.

Wearing masks onboard wasn’t that big of a deal, however we were also on an oasis class ship which has more open spaces (central park/boardwalk)

That answers my question.  I was wondering on Oasis if the boardwalk and central park were places you had to wear masks.  I am like I think that is considered outside, but never been on an Oasis ship.  So is it really just walking to and from room to destination and entering places of eating?  But once at table you can remove mask, right?  And then shows?  my son is 4 so family shows we will have to be in the unvaccinated area but if he is not with us and in the kids area then we can do vaccinated stuff because my two girls will be vaccinated.  I did notice the only restaurant my kids would want is vax only and I don't want to do it without my son because he loves sushi and hibachi too.

On Oasis class ships you don’t have to wear masks on the Boardwalk or in the Central Park area, they’re both considered outside.  Also, the minute you walk into the casino or any of the bars/clubs you can immediately remove you’re mask since they’re for vaccinated only.  The same applies for any specialty restaurant, the mask can come off as soon as you walk in even though they are not vaccinated only.  We were just on Symphony last month and and also just got off Odyssey yesterday …… that’s how it was on both ships.

Last month on Symphony, we also ate in Izumi Sushi with 3 unvaccinated kids ages 9, 10, and 18 months.

Oh good to hear, I was planning to see what deals Black Friday would get me for food.  I don't have to do a specialty place but my one child did ask about that one.

They allow the unvaccinated to eat on the sushi side of Izumi. You just can't do hibachi it has to be a shared table with another party.
