πŸ’₯ U.S to Re-open Land Border with Canada in early November! πŸ’₯

What a bureaucratic mess. You need to be vaccinated to cross the land border, but you may not need to prove it. But if you fly in by plane, you need to double your documentation.

Β

Foreign visitors crossing into the United States by land or ferry will need to be vaccinated but will not necessarily need to show proof of vaccination unless they are referred by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol for secondary inspections.

Β

By contrast, all non-U.S. air travelers will need to show proof of vaccination before boarding a flight, and will need to show proof of a recent negative COVID-19 test. Foreign visitors crossing a land border will not need to show proof of a recent negative COVID-19 test.

Made worse too by the fact that technically the border has been closed all this time but flying visitors have been allowed to come to the US from Canada.Β  The official verbiage said it's closed but it was closed softly with no testing or vaccine required for most of the 19 month closure.Β Β

Once again the CDCΒ  is right on top of things!Β  #toolittletoolateΒ

I guess your PCR test to get back into Canada (for like a day trip) could be done before you leave....Not sure the cost would warrant a day trip...

PCR tests are free in the US (for US citizens), covered by the federal government if private health insurance doesn't cover it.

Rapid PCR tests may not be free.Β  The rapid tests offered in airports is not free.Β  Walmart, CVS, Walgreens and others offer free PCR tests that take ~ 48 hours for results.

Hence the travel warning still up on the government of Canada site about avoiding all cruise ship travel that basically all Canadian travel insurance carriers are citing when it comes to exclusions in covid insurance coverage.

Be interesting to see if they still say that after "opening" the ports to cruise ships soon.

If cruise ships are a threat and should be avoided, why allow them into port?

It’s the same situation in the US is it not? CDC recommends avoiding cruise ship travel but is allowing ships to sail nonetheless?

Actually the CDC backed off the absolute don't cruise mantra several months ago.Β  It became:

CDC recommends that travelers areΒ fully vaccinatedΒ against COVID-19 prior to traveling on a cruise ship.

Travelers who are at anΒ increased risk of severe illnessΒ from COVID-19 should avoid travel on cruise ships, including river cruises, worldwide, regardless of vaccination status.

My wife just got back from a few days in Canada.Β  While not quite the same as Canadians coming down, she said the process on each side was easy as long as you have all your ducks in a row....testing, vaccination card, etc.

Β

Fly or drive?Β  I'm going to drive across later this month and drive back.Β Β

She drove up and back.Β
Β

Unlike Royal, Canada counts hours for the test to enter. It must be within 72 hours of entry. Β PCR only.Β
Β

No problems crossing back into the States. Β She has dual citizenship therefore can travel on her American passport.Β

Her sister, who went with her, is still a Canadian citizen and had no problems getting back in the states with her Canadian passport and US resident alien card.Β

Washington Post reports the US Government is looking to introduce new restrictions on entering the country by air, including 1 day pre-flight testing instead of 3 and possibly to include a 7 day quarantine.Β  FYI for Canadians flying to the USA for a cruise or Americans cruising out of foreign ports.

That's ridiculous.Β  They are basically shutting their borders...as who can add 7 days prior to any trip (business or pleasure).

Is this air only?Β  Our plan was to drive.

Quarantine...the nail in the coffin. 😒

πŸ’―agree. I don’t see quarantine as a viable option because how do theyΒ enforce it…but we have seen stranger things happen throughout this pandemic so anything is possible. Let’s hope for some encouraging news tomorrow. Β

The CDC has so far been following the science... that the virus only travels by airplane since the land border is open without any testing requirement to enter the US.Β Β πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Note to self. Always travel with a couple of eMed kits in my carry on just in case.Β Β

I hope they continue to leave the land border alone.Β  Pretty soon I'll need a full car office with printer, scanner, eMed kits, small kitchen to cook food and make coffee while waiting for results, etc.Β  Maybe I should buy a motorhome.Β

Looking down the road (pun intended) to when both sides land border require a test to enter... So what happens when you drive across a border bridge and reach the other side without a test?Β  Can't go forward without a test and can't go back into the source country without a test.Β  Stuck on the bridge. "Bridge People".

What happens if you catch the virus while stuck on the bridge between the two countries?Β  Hmmm.Β  Note to self - stay well away from other Bridge People.Β Β

Looks like this is the plan.Β  That March 18 extension for the mask mandate should be of note to cruisers. But getting at-home tests covered is nice, assuming they are covered for travel purposes.

Β

  • Requiring travelers entering the country by air to test negative for COVID within a day of departure, regardless of vaccination status or nationality, instead of within three days.
  • Extending through March 18 the requirement that masks be worn onΒ airplanes, trains and public transportation.
  • Requiring private health insurance companies cover 100% of the cost of at-home tests for the coronavirus.Β Β
  • Launching a publicΒ education campaign to encourage 100 million adults to get boosters, with a special focus on seniors.

This is good news.Β  We would test the day before anyways if flying (or day of if driving) so no impact.

Its official now

"All air passengers 2 years or older with a flight departing to the US from a foreign country at or afterΒ 12:01am EST (5:01am GMT) on December 6, 2021,Β are required show a negative COVID-19 viral test result taken no more than 1 day before travel, or documentation of having recovered from COVID-19 in the past 90 days, before they board their flight."

Not great for people crossing the pond for cruises, but fully understand the reasoning behind the implementation of these measures.Β

Especially with the new 24 hour testing requirement coming in now with 24 hours for all air travel. Makes it difficult to spend time in the US pre cruise for a few days, now its basically fly in day before, and board ship.

In that scenario wouldn't it be a simple matter of getting another test once in the US?

Many Canadians are taking advantage of the free testing at CVS & Walgreens to get tested once in the US.Β  However since testing isn't free in Canada the cost of a second test in the US isn't an outrageous concept if you want to spend a week or even 3 or 4 days in the US before a cruise.Β Β

Either way it isn't the 24 hour test to fly rule that causes a second test to be required for anyone spending time before a cruise.Β  The 2 day test to cruise rule that has been in place since September is the rule that complicates a pre-cruise vacation in the US.Β  That rule is something we all have faced since September.Β
