Onboard Credit - transfer / refund‽

Recommended Posts

Hi All, have been searching for some info to no avail ... hoping someone may know the answer (as wait times for Royal are over 45mins atm).

I have gone passed final payment date for my Jewel sailing in Cyprus in October and rang Royal to get the pricedrop run through (pricedrop on uk website was circa £150), knowing this would be issued as OBC which I was fine about (can always spend in Spa etc...).

However, the agent re-priced using the promotion on the US website, which drastically reduced the amount of my single supplement.  Now I had a price drop of $1200 that has been given as OBC.  This is on top of my original $400 OBC.  Help - no way I can spend this onboard Jewel ... I'd need at least an Oasis class ship ?

My Questions -

  1. What happens at the end of the cruise with any unspent credit?
  2. Can I transfer OBC to another sailing?

Any tips or help welcome...otherwise anyone else on Jewel on 2nd October can help me spend it (participation won't be optional ?)

How would the casino option work?

Would I go get £1200 in chips from cashier, then immediately cash them in, and ask for it in cash?  Or can I get them to send cash back on my bank card?

You can ask them for cash to play the slots. They charge 5% at the cashier window. Or you can see if the slot machine will allow you to charge to your onboard account to add play. Then you get a redemption ticket and go to the machine that converts those to cash (if there is one) or you take it to the cashier window.

Or you get the chips and bet it all on black ??

There are different types of OBC, refundable and nonrefundable. Nonrefundable is lost at disembarkation if not used.  I usually spend my OBC, but I have learned the casino trick mentioned by others: Take an advance at the casino on your seapass card, pay the 5% commission or whatever it is, and pocket the cash (don't lose it gambling).

As per the T&Cs, this OBC is non-refundable so it's a case of use it or lose it.

Have you booked any pre-paid stuff such as gratuities, speciality dining, excursions etc? If so, consider cancelling them as that will generate actual refunds to your original form of payment. Even if it takes a few weeks you will eventually recoup that cash. The OBC, which should show up in your cruise planner, can then be used to repurchase the cancelled items.

On the last day of the cruise, if you still have any left, use it up in the shops to buy gifts for yourself or others (think early Christmas shopping).

The seapass card with the OBC needs to be used to get the OBC.  What I was trying to get at in my earlier reply is that another stateroom guest may have OBC on his/her card, but if that card itself isn't used to make purchases, the OBC doesn't get applied to the stateroom total at the end of the cruise.  My OBC was applied, as my CC was on file for payment.  So with OBC, it is important to know which account has the credit.  When I trade in Royal Visa points for OBC, I can choose whether I want to share the OBC with my wife or keep it in just my name.

Me either!  I never understood why there was, for example, the options of $100 OBC and $100 OBC shared (since my husband and I share pretty much everything anyway, lol).

I have also received both onboard credit options.  I have cashed in my Royal Caribbean credit card points for $500 OBC.  I must use MY OWN Seapass card for it to take from this OBC. The good news is that this credit is added to my Seapass account via BofA VISA and is therefor fully refundable at the end of the cruise (as long as you don't forget to cash out before you depart!)  On the other hand, If Royal offers the OBC it is not refundable and you lose it at the end of the cruise unless you spend it all beforehand or use the methods mentioned above (casino cash out). I have once cashed out almost $700 from having Royal OBC and BofA credits.  We used up all of the RCC credits and less than $300 of the BofA.  Wife given $500 OBC and Myself given $500.  Yes we pay everything we can on our RC Visa to rack up those points.  You also get Double Points if you use it to book and pay for anything RC including the cruise cost itself. No, I am not an employee of BofA  LOL.
