What are people's thoughts on 2022 Canada cruises?

Recommended Posts

I think Canada is slowly de-escalating in baby steps as we speak.

They took a lot of heat when the Alaska Recovery act passed allowing ships to bypass Canada in 2021, I don't think they'll make that mistake for the 2022 Alaska season.

If you book soon while CWC is included you do get some safety from that plus if the unthinkable happens and Canada stays in lockdown for another 12 months Royal has offered full refunds as an option when cruises cancel or moved to Seattle.

That first sailing on Quantum from Vancouver is a real bargain.  Alaska for those prices won't be seen again once Alaska cruising is back in full force.

In the big picture I think booking the 2022 Alaska season from Vancouver is pretty low risk.

This is something I have been paying really close attention of late.  If you would have asked me this question 2-3 weeks ago, I probably would be more pessimistic about it. However, there has been a whole lot of rumblings over the last two weeks about possible border reopening, a plan was submitted to the feds last week listing the conditions to be exempt from quarantine.

All news points in a very positive direction for border restrictions to start easing very soon in Canada. The latest is an article posted last night by both Bloomberg and Politico. Both basically sum up the rumours swirling of late. I will also attach the plan that was submitted to the feds last Friday.

I want to get another double points cruise in before that window expires. Looking at Alaska next May or June.  The Vancouver cruises are a good bit cheaper than Seattle, but I'm not sure I trust Canada to be fully open by then.

What's the airfare look like?  Does the Canadian ban expire in Feb '22 or is it open ended?

I really hope it's back to normal, in terms of allowing cruise ship traffic to Canada. That and open the land border so @Lovetocruise2002 can start up her 2022 live blog in about six weeks from now

Forget 2022! If our borders open soon, I want to try to squeeze in a summer cruise! Lol

Airfare is atrocious as usual.... costs me about $600 to fly to Toronto from here(1.5-2hr hr flight)...its going to terrible for a long while here I think.

I would think by next May or June you should be safe....anything before that is a gamble. I am looking at booking a cruise for April of 2022 and I am wary and not ready to commit yet.

But to be honest..unless we end up with Covid waves 6 through 10 around North American, it should be fine by next spring/summer..I wouldn't plan anything for winter of 2022 in or out of Canada stil at this point.

we have 70.3% of our population vaccinated here in NB..and we still cant visit dying family or travel or attend a sport event or music or not wear masks everywhere....we are WAY behind the USA when it comes to relaxing those restrictions!!!

That's crazy!   We can fly on WJ from Vancouver to Toronto all summer for about $300 round trip as they try to drum up travel.   I think Air Canada has similar deals.

I booked a 4 night Canada cruise to Halifax, NS in June, 2022.  Anyone been to Halifax before and what excursions are worth it?

Halifax is amazing, we absolutely love that city. Peggy's Cove is an excellent excursion and they usually have an excursion to the Titanic victim graveyard and then to a Maritime museum with a bunch of Titanic artifacts. Personal favorite of mine as I'm a bit of a Titanic historian, ok a lot a bit. 🤣 Are you sailing Oasis from NJ? We are booked on Oasis June 2022.

this trip is Adventure OTS from NJ to Canada.  I want to do another NJ one on a bigger ship as well, but I think I have to pace myself. 😂  Thanks for the recommendation. I'm not really a museum kinda person. More of an adventure / scenery / nature type.

Peggy's Cove might be better for you then. It's a beautiful old fishing village with an awesome lighthouse. It's just gorgeous scenery in every direction.

Can’t wait to get back to Canada cruising from Bayonne. Halifax is great…even just walking off the ship and touring the terminal with it's displays on the history of immigration into Canada. Then a stroll along the waterfront…great restaurants, shopping…they have a fully restored WW2 convoy escort corvette, the HMCS Sackville that you can tour. There’s also the CSS Acadia, a restored survey ship which is the only ship to survive the Halifax explosion. Near the end of the Boardwalk is the Maritime museum. Big, sprawling and lots of exhibits and videos about the Titanic and the Halifax Harbor explosion. Another stroll inland and there are more great restaurants and pubs (my usual is The Old Triangle Ale House for lunch)…and a little further is the Citadel. A restored fort on top of a huge hill overlooking the harbor where they do military life re-enactments. Yeah, I’m a history buff.
That’s just some of the things to do in the area of the terminal. There are also plenty of excursions. By the way…the locals are great!

We just did the Mrs first cruise and my 3rd but first on RC. Did the 4 day to Coco Cay and Nassau out of Miami on the Beautiful Freedom of the seas. The flying from Toronto was horrible. Our next cruise will be driving to Bayonne. I think we will start with the Halifax 4 day and then do the Bahamas 5 day.

Neither of us have been to Halifax so even though it's Canada I think it will be great still. We sure liked the Promenade room!

We are flying from Toronto to Orlando ; how is it horrible? Pearson is generally pretty quick to connect through, we have a four hour layover.

We just dislike all of the waiting and I'm sure it depends on several things. Pearson is handling covid well but for us it's 2 hours to the airport, get parking shuttle to the airport 45 mins, then they want you there 3 hours early, our flight was delayed 2 hours, we sat on the plane 1 hour before it took off, 3 hour flight, sat on the plane 45 minutes after landing, then was 1 hour total to get to the hotel. Wearing a mask on the plane not fun either.

On the way back the Miami airport was terrible, dirty and hardly any covid measures. Rude people rude TSA just an overall bad experience. For us we can drive to Bayonne in 9-10 hours vs the 13 hours or so involved in a 3 hour flight. Once we got on the ship though all of the stress wuickly melted away! Next time we will drive and see how that goes.

Bayonne-Halifax 4-day is a great cruise. If you're looking to do a 5-day out of Bayonne, look more at the Bermuda than anything further south (and try to avoid the first and last cruises of the season, as it will much cooler). The 7-day Bahamas cruises are pretty meh if you've been to Nassau before (CocoCay is the selling point for those), but the 9-night itineraries are (IMHO) the best Bayonne cruises out there.

That's great info, thank you! For now the Mrs wants to stick to 4 or 5 days but thinks she will work up to the 7 day. Cost wise the Canada 4 day looks really good especially driving and not paying for flights. The 5 day Bermuda one looks appealing too.

We aren't too concerned with the ports as we stayed on the ship and loved it. More the weather so I get what you are saying about the cooler weather in May/June.
