Possible decrease in cruise ship capacity for Singapore Sailings

Recommended Posts

So, Singapore has been having a slow increase in our locally transmitted cases of Covid-19. As such, the government has just tightened some measures in regards to gatherings and events.

Here a short excerpt from a local news article.

If cruises do decrease capacity to 25%, I wonder what will become of the guest already booked. It’s coming to the school holidays here, and I’m assuming cruises at this time would be pretty much fully booked.

I don’t think Royal has mentioned anything yet, but change may be on the horizon

Increase in cases?

Well, in the grand scheme of things, it’s nowhere near what’s happening elsewhere in the world, but to us, we went from 0 local transmissions for months to double digits daily, with new clusters forming all around the country. Maybe partly because we have been experiencing a very Low number of cases, is that many measures were no longer implemented or as strictly enforced. The governments’s just trying to stop the further spread before we go in full lockdown again

We all hope for the best for Singapore.  A timely reminder the virus hasn't been defeated.

Any news or suggestion on any of that new spread occuring because of cruising?

Thankfully, no. Mainly, it started from the hospital, and from there spread to various people. The bad thing about living in such a small country, is that once it starts spreading, no where in the country is really safe since anyone can travel from one side of the country to the other in around an hour.

It is mildly concerning that the spread was from someone already vaccinated, but that is to be expected with any vaccine, especially one still so new.

Saw an update from Singapore Cruise Society.

Seems quantum will update guests in the next 24 hours.

World dream has already released their new measures that seem a little severe, mainly the suspension of dine in options. This is most likely in line with local laws on land now suspending dine in too.

Since you don’t wear a mask going into the pool, it seems like the pool will be closed too from that they have written.

@LogicallyLazy how has the vaccine rollout gone in Singapore? Do you know approximately how many have been vaccinated?

Hope it calms down soon

As of right now, all healthcare workers, airport staff as well as some sectors of essential workers are vaccinated. The elderly were vaccinated in this same batch, with incremental vaccinations rolling out for younger age groups. We’re currently in the process of vaccinating individuals 45 and up. But the aim currently is to have all eligible be fully vaccinated by the end of the year

Based on google, that accounts for around 22% of our population fully vaccinated as of now D470805D-28CB-4BFB-9929-2667B87FE462.thumb.jpeg.1680d6eb092fcd7a58358a338e512c63.jpeg

This isn't a good sign. Pretty sure if I were a Singaporean, I'd cancel.

I read a very well done piece yesterday in the Economist that noted Asia, in general and since the pandemic began 15 months ago, had comparably lower excess death rates due to COVID than European, South and North American regions. Some speculate a reason for that being that there might have been some natural immunity conferred to people in this region due to the presence of commonly high levels of circulating Coronavius. Thus, the initial strains of SARS2 were close to those other circulating Coronaviruses. Newer strains are beginning to appear in Asia as mobility restrictions are eased. Natural immunity is diminished in the face of these variants. New Cases are rising. Japan, Malaysia and apparently Singapore are seeing rising new case numbers.

This is a nasty and persistent virus. While we celebrate what looks like the end of the worst in the US and start thinking about a return to cruising in July that nasty virus is mutating elsewhere where it is still circulating and at already high or getting there rates. We still really don't know how the current vaccines will fare against new, Ninja variants. So far, the news has been good on that front and boosters are easy to re-configure, especially in the mRNA versions of them. Bottom line, get the vaccines into arms, more quickly and more widely, especially where there are signs, like in Singapore, of rising new case numbers/% positivity/hospitalizations. Importantly don't over-react. Manage. Frankly, although I get it, health authorities are over-reacting a bit wrt Quantum.
