Air Quality in the Casino

Recommended Posts

I just read on the RCI web page, "On Royal Caribbean® ships, our HVAC system continuously supplies 100% fresh, filtered air from outdoors to all indoor spaces." It also said something to the effect that public areas had a complete air change about 17 times an hour. I assume this includes the casino because there is no mention of any excluded areas. So, if smoking is still allowed in the casino, shouldn't the air quality be much improved?

I'm a nonsmoker, I can only tolerate the smell of a burning cigarette for so long then I have to go.  At the same time I feel like I have to ask what is a casino without some form of cigarette smoke?

As much time as my husband and I spend in Casino Royal if we are on the nonsmoking side of the casino I don't smell the smoke at all.  It really seems like in my opinion Royal continuously pumps in fresh air into the casino because you do have people who are sensitive to the smoke or don't want to smell the smoke at all.   If the nonsmoking side of the casino were inundated with cigarette smoke that might keep some nonsmokers away or cause them to spend less time in the casino than they normally would.

I did notice that there was less cigarette smell on Harmony's non-smoking side.

Allure had more smell than Harmony, but it was manageable.

On Indy, the smoke got pulled to the non-smoking side whenever the doors to Playmakers opened.

Overall, none of the smells were strong, but it was noticeable.

I really wish the casino was non-smoking. We cruised on the Carnival Paradise when it was 100% non-smoking ship which was great. As much as I like to play blackjack, I avoid the casinos when there is smoking allowed. Yes, I can smell it on the non-smoking side too.

Royal Caribbean does not want its guest to leave the casino to have a smoke.   They want you to stay in there as long as possible so they can drain a few dollars from your bank account.   Also I've noticed when they are fueling the ship the only place smokers can smoke is in the casino and they take it very seriously.   On the newer larger ships like the Oasis Class and Quantum Class they really do a good job of pulling in the fresh air into the casino.

Although I don't smoke, I don't think cruises should be 100% non-smoking that sounds like it would be hell for anyone who smokes.  And having a 100% non-smoking policy only forces people to hide their smoking (smoking in cabin, public bathrooms or on their balconies) which could lead to unintended consequences.  I'm willing to bet apples to oranges the reason Carnival relented was because they were discovering guest were still smoking onboard.  So why not dedicate several areas on the ship as smoking sections and for those of us who are nonsmokers if we choose to venture into the smoking section then we are choosing to deal with cigarette smoke.

Oh I agree with not having a 100% non-smoking ship. I’m sure Carnival had a hard time enforcing it, especially with crew members. I also understand why they don’t want guests leaving the casino to smoke, I just choose to avoid the casino.

I have never smoked and also do not tolerate it well.  If the casino was non-smoking I would be  playing the tables, now I just play a slot machine near entrance.

Would much rather play tables but I understand why they have part of it smoking.  The non-smoking side is still smoky and smells in my opinion. But I can deal with it when on a ship.    It is always hard to please everyone and they do their best to accommodate everyone.

I hate hate hate it that Royal Caribbean allows smoking in the casinos. One, because I'd love to play. But besides that, I can smell it wafting into the Royal Promenade from the ships that have that spiral staircase from the Promenade into the Casino.
So I don't agree that their air filtration system before was great, and I hope that it gets better from here.

I totally agree, I am a "non smoking gambler" and we travel to some casinos from time to time and some are better then others with the smoke issue.  We go during times that are "less busy" to help, but on the cruise that is not really an option.

On one of our cruises, we spoke with the hotel director after the "captains talk" and he said that it was his opinion that Royal should stop allowing the smoking in the casino and he "hoped" it could happen with the LNG powered ships.  He was talking about some extra costs that the ships incur for things and then there is always the risk of fire should someone not dispose of it properly.

I'm sure Royal (and other lines) are studying the numbers to see at what point it becomes financially able to stop the smoking in the casino.  Honestly though, the casinos have never really been that busy on the ships we've cruised at any time of the day.

Stay Safe.

Nothing worse than going back to your cabin and having your clothes smell like smoke.

The way I get around that is that I have a special “casino outfit”.  It’s really just my workout clothes that never make it to the gym ?

If I spend enough time in the casino, I give them a quick wash in the sink and hang them in the shower to dry.

stay safe
