19yo activities on board / Teen Area Help

Hi, I’ll be boarding Symphony of the Seas on my next cruise, first with RC.

I am 19yo and used to hang out at teen 15-17/18, will it be possibile for me ? Or do they check board id when in teen area/club ? Cuz I am really shy and that’s only way for me to make friends.

On the other hand my old brother ( 23yo ) asked me to add his concerns about 18 to 23yo activities, do u have any info or place where he can find same ages friends and areas where to hang out / party / dance ?

Thanks a lot, lf to ur answers

Welcome to the message boards!

You will not be allowed in the teen club as a 19 year old. They restrict it to teens 17 and under only.

Also teen disco ? Do they check our pass/id ? Noway I can sneak in ?

So what about my activities? And what about my brother ? Pls help us ahaha

Absolutely no way that they will allow anyone 18 or over into teen activities, I'd be very doubtful that you can sneak in. It seems bizarre to me that they are so rigid with age difference (an 18/19 year old has more in common with a 17 year old than a 23 year old) but I suppose they have to prevent potentially dodgy folks sneaking into teen clubs.

Not really sure on what activities are available for 19 year olds but I do feel that the 18-29 age group are kinda forgotten about by cruise lines. Luckily you're going on Symphony (amazing ship) so there should be plenty of things to do on the ship anyway.

Yes, they do check ID.  My boys (now 21 & 23) found the 18-20 age the roughest when it came to activities, but also enjoyed the new freedoms they had by being over 18.  Mine are not overly outgoing either, but always have each other so that worked out well.  At 18 you can go into the casino, nightclubs (some will be 21+ but not all), attend the late night comedy.  Your brother will obviously be able to do anything that involves alcohol.

Some sailings there has been scheduled meet ups in the Cruise Planner.  There may be one member of the cruise staff that shows up for the first one, but usually it's a place for that age group to gather and it's expected the the most social of the group will go around and introduce themselves and start forming groups.  Similar to that person on the floor in your dorm that is the one to gather folks.  But there will be no coordinated activities.

My boys used to hang out in the evenings in the card rooms, outdoor movies, comedy clubs, and Sorrentos.  Or they would meet up with us in the Schooner Bar for music.  They loved Music Hall for the bands.  During the day, if it was a sea day, you'll find them near the pool.  They enjoy the pool games (belly flop, volleyball, etc).  Since you're on Symphony, think Playmakers as a good spot to draw in your age group.

Another idea would be to approach the Activities Director (not the Cruise Director, they aren't usually easy to get a conversation in with) and ask about how many passengers are on board in your age group and if there will be any planned meetups listed in the Cruise Compass.  They print those every day, and if you ask the AD will usually try their best to include something to help facilitate a great vacation for you.   They are working for a 10 on your post-cruise survey - and want to make you happy.  If they know there is someone looking for something specific they will make it happen if they can.

Our youngest joined me last January on the second leg of my back to back.   He was 19 at the time.

He had a good time in spite of himself.  We rarely saw each other except for the shore excursions we did.  For the most part, we kept to our home sleep schedules...I’m early to bed and rise, he’s the opposite.

I don’t know everything he did, but here are some of the things I’m aware of:

He went to a lot of trivia in the schooner bar, listened to a lot of live music at the different venues. hung out with some people he met at the water slides, found some people to play games with, he went to the silent disco, and quite amazingly (he has anxiety) was a team captain at Quest

At 19 you can go in all the different venues, but you cannot drink alcohol.

One suggestion I have is to be willing to step outside your comfort zone

Yes, have your younger teen siblings not go to the teen activities, and instead hang out with you at public venues. Similar to how you might spend time with your parents.

Not only is this against the rules, they scan it and check the photo and information. It's not just a look at the ID, and they use your SeaPass card, not your driver's license.

IMO older teenage girls are harder (on the parents).  Too old for the youth programs but old enough they don't want to hangout with dad 24 x 7.  I know the ships well but when she went off on her own the ship felt 10 times bigger.  Boys are easier in this sense.  Things can happen on cruise ships like they can back home so talk with them and establish rules.

Consider paying for the internet (Voom) package for you and them, keep your phone with you, establish texting or chat practices so they can communicate with you but also back home to their friends so they don't feel isolated and to reduce their stress and feeling like they have no connection to anything.

On one hand it is an opportunity for them to establish some freedom and confidence being on their own but don't assume a ship is 100% safe from everything.  I've never had a background check required to cruise so that tells me no other fellow passenger has either.  While I know I am not threat to people in this age group that doesn't mean there isn't another guest on board that isn't.

Very good advice that I didn't think about.

I got the basic Voom Surf package for my son.  He not only brought his phone, he brought his laptop.  He said it was great to be able to stay in touch with friends, especially the first couple days when he was trying to get his bearings.  After that, he was able to share pictures of things like snorkeling in the Caribbean while his friends were freezing in mid-winter Maine.

Where did I read that messaging in the Royal App is free while onboard?  So you can chat with other passengers while on ship without breaking the bank on Voom?

The chat feature in the app was rumored or suggested to be free but very recently it was discovered that this feature carries a charge on Quantum in Singapore.  Asia is a different market and we don't know yet if ships in other regions will also charge for the chat feature.

Keep in mind this chat only works on the ship with other guests on the ship.  One of things I was suggesting above is that chatting off ship with friends at home could make life easier for a teen.
