Carnival to sail August 1

I am confused at how this will even be possible. I know Trump has been saying all sorts of amazing things but does everyone honestly expect there to be no new cases by August 1. The numbers have stabilised but not really dropping. How can there be a guarantee that no one will be carrying the virus by then.

Who said this guarantee's no new cases? Cruising can resume while there is cases they just have to be extremely careful which they will be.. Its the same as Casino's, movie theaters, amusement parks opening.. Those are all things that will be opening this year while there still are cases.. There is no guarantee people won't be carrying the virus that's why they probably will make people wear masks, do temp checks before boarding, clean constantly... everything that Disney and Casinos want to put in place I'm sure cruises will also want to put in place.. And if your too scared and feel uncomfortable just don't cruise lol but for the rest of us who want to cruise immediately and are willing to risk it why not.. Its just as risky as Casinos and Disney World

I think it will be forever and a day before there are no new cases. Also temperature checks mean nothing, I hate that is the standard that has come about. Every time they interview someone who refuses to wear a mask it is because they have no temperature, therefore they aren't sick. Most people with the virus are asymptomatic and have a regular temp. The only true defense, besides a vaccine, is to be clean and mindful. As much as I would love a cruise, I no longer feel comfortable. The reason being that the average person has not adhered or been able to survive what has been 6 weeks of trying to flatten the curve. Their entitlement has overshadowed all, those same people will be some of the first to sail. They will pretend to agree with the safety precautions, only to renege on the second day...maybe even as soon as sail away. Vacation is meant to be fun and carefree; wearing mask during excursions and activities, constantly taking temp, and restrictive spacing for shows and such is not "fun."

I mean I don't think, mentally, I would be okay sitting somewhere covered up in hazard wear. Like who would want to sit at table in a mask and gloves, while a person wearing the same thing takes my order and brings me food? I would have negative connotations associated with that activity, any activity that reminds me of germs. If the cruise was just hand washing and limited capacity to decrease amount of germs; then I will be the first one on the ship. Social distancing and mask, defeat the purpose of a cruise. Rant aside...I am sure they will sail, regardless of COVID cases or safety precautions as it is a God given right.

I know people really want to cruise but with all the measures that will likely be in place it doesn’t seem reasonable to pay full or near full price for a vacation that will likely have limited activities, stringent guidelines, masks everywhere, safety checks each port, etc.

You just gonna eat and hangout in your room? I’ve been doing that for 6 weeks now.

Before we cruise again I need the following answered.
That the US port will allow the ship to return and dock even if there are confirmed active cases on board and the process for disembarking everyone else.

I know people are eager to cruise, but I just don't believe for a second that a ship coming into port with an active covid case is going to be allowed to dock and 4000 people scatter to the winds all across the country/world.  Also, what about airlines?  Several crew refused to fly with a plane load of cruise ship passengers only a month ago. Are airlines really going to allow people on their plans that just got off a ship with a confirmed covid case?

If you are in a job that can't work from home, it is likely you will be forced to self isolate for 2 weeks after you get back from a cruise and international travel for the foreseeable future.

CDC response to Carnival: "August 1, huh?  That's news to us."

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/may/04/carnival-cruise-line-coronavirus-resume-operations

Quote

In response to the announcement, the CDC said it had not discussed timelines for resuming cruise travel with any operators, adding “we do not have enough information to say when it will be safe for cruise ships to resume sailing”.

...

“CDC will continue to work with cruise lines to ensure all necessary public health procedures are in place when cruise lines do begin regular sailing. CDC has not consulted with any of the cruise lines on timelines for resuming cruise travel for passengers.”

There are going to be new cases for at least the next 18 months ...

People seem to think that when we come out of hibernation the virus will be gone, that has never been true and it not the intent. All we are doing is trying to slow the spread so that hospitals dont get overwhelmed ... people will be getting infected until we all get it or there is an effective vaccine ...

That was last month when nobody was flying and it was pretty big news of these passengers being released.  Airlines were flying empty.  Passengers were the talk.  Not hard to put 2 and 2 together.

If you are saying you will have to say if you were on a cruise, than I think the airlines have no leg to stand on.  Passengers will just say nope.  They can just say they were on vacation.   Plus, there is an argument that could be made are they going to stop people from Europe getting on any airplane after they spent a week at Disney?

  •  I have friends that live in the UK.  They come every other yr.  They could come in from the UK not knowing they have the virus, spend a week going to Cape Cavernal, Universal and Disney driving around in a rental car.  Go back home and than find out they have the virus.  The damage has been done.  Do you actually think that rental car companies are going to steam clean every car after renting it?  Not me.  They will wipe it down, and vaccum, but that is it.  Those germs will be there.  Same with things they have touched at the hotels or amusement parks.

Finally,  I think the airlines will be willing and won't try to rock the boat.

  •  South West has never in its 50+ yr history furloughed any employee, even after 9/11.  They are telling their staff to get ready to be furloughed by Sept.  I am sure other airlines, such as American and Delta will beat them to furloughing.

IOWS, they need people to get back on ships.  Do the math.  Let's say 25K passengers sail out of Miami on RCL per week (Nav, Mariner, Oasis, Symphony) now add in Carnival, NCL, Disney and Princess.  You have about 100K per week sailing.  Assume 50% fly in.  That is 50K passengers per week that will be on a plane.  Those gates at the airports cost $$$ for airlines.  They cannot afford to lose that many airfares.

Additionally,  every airline would have to agree to this idea.  If SWA says nope, and Delta says yeap, don't you think people will just fly on Delta even if it costs them more?  SWA knows this and they are going to be in financial trouble.

The only way for the idea of not allowing cruisers to fly after sailing would be if the govt came down with a regulation to tie their hands.

I think it actually will be until there is an effective vaccine.  They are already showing that people can get it a 2nd time unlike the chickenpox, thus the vaccine is going to be the only route impo.

I keep wondering if they will move it to Florida...for July or August...

I hope so!   Keep checking to see if they added it to the system.  I only have a small window left in the summer to get our family cruise back in.  My daughter reports back to high school early because of ROTC the first week of August!

Currently looking at the Symphony for either 7/18 or 7/25

I read an article this morning that indicated that the CDC had no knowledge of Carnivals plan to resume cruising and that Carnival had not consulted with them (CDC) about this plan.  Makes me wonder if it was ever real to begin with.

But I wonder if Carnival did that on purpose? I feel like when the CDC came out with the no sail order they blindsided the cruise lines.. I remember they announced it late on a Thursday night giving the cruise lines no time to warn guests or have a response. Of course the CDC can do what they like but I think the cruise lines were upset about that and maybe that's why Carnival didn't consult CDC? Who knows I am purely speculating lol and could be totally off base.. I just wish everyone would get on the same page and give us some info.

I need you advise. My cruise for this months is cancel. Reading about possible bankruptcy I am afraid Royal can go try that to. Should I get money back or gamble and put 125% for cruise that I put deposit for next May?

This is highly under debate. While they are finding traces of RNA after people have "recovered" there's debate as to whether this is actually virus that is active and transmissible.  Let's hope not.

Assuming RC filled to reorganize debt, I am 99% sure that FCC would still be valid. The company still needs customers to survive and they want people to take their cruses. If they made all FCC's worthless, then the company would be done.

United, Delta and American Airlines have each gone through Chapter 11 twice, and everyone kept their frequent flyer miles.

Yep, makes total sense. Making FCC’s worthless is the nuclear option. Would make no sense for a company that needs loyal guests to continue booking cruises.

I agree with you @WAAAYTOOO that I wonder if this is even remotely true that Carnical will begin sailing then. Sadly I think this is wishful thinking on everyones part. We are still deep in the pandemic worldwide. First, where will the ships sail from? No port in the US is prepared to open any time soon. And secondly, what countries are willing to recieve cruise ships? It would be interesting to see what itineraries Carnival is booking to what countries and then check those countries policies. I think this is a marketing move on thier part. Put it out there "We are sailing!" and guage interest and collect a lot of deposits with no real plan to be able to actually execute the cruise until the CDC approves them again. With all of the threads here about FCC's and the disposition of them I dont think I would be in a rush to give anyone any money on what is bascially wishful thinking right now.

Maybe thier intentions are honorable here about sailing. I also have honorable intentions of winning the powerball jackpot every weekend but that hasnt happened yet either.

Well I can tell you the Ships would sail from Florida... I live in Florida.. I can tell you Our governor sadly is a Mini Trump. And since Trump believes things should open Most of Florida is open.. South Florida is stated to open May 18.. I could see us being in phase 2 by Mid June... Tourism can resume in phase 2 and I have a feeling by end of July we absolutely will be ready to have ships.. Where do I think they will go probably Bahamas, Coco Cay, Labadee, Mexico, and wherever the Caribbean will let boats dock.. They also could very well leave out of Texas as their Governor also lets things be open.. Everywhere else I think not but that's exactly why Carnival said they will sail out of Florida and Galveston because those are the only 2 places that will let cruise ships lol.. I Strongly feel by End of July Early August ships will leave from Florida and Texas..

Thanks @AGSLC5  Sadly I have watched your governor from afar so fully understand what you are saying. Doesnt the CDC have something to do with this? Is there any inkling from them if they will extend the order or not?

If the information below is correct then maybe #3 is the loophole for FLorida. April 9th + 100 days is July 19th. so unless it gets extended it doesnt look like there would currently be any legal reason agains it.

The CDC Order

The order effectively bans cruise ship operations in light of the COVID-19 epidemic until the earliest of any of three conditions is met:

1-  If the Secretary of Health and Human Services declares that the COVID-19 public health emergency has expired;

2- If the CDC Director rescinds or modifies the order, based on public health or other considerations;

3- 100 days from the date of publication (April 9) of the order in the Federal Register.

The industry association, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), voluntarily suspended cruise ship operations on March 14 in conjunction with an earlier order issued by the CDC.

The CDC No sail order is over July 24.. So ships could resume right away at that point.. This is Why Disney said they want to resume July 27 and Carnival said Aug 1.. That way they are complying with the CDC order.. I have a feeling Royal will Follow suit and Start either July 30 or Aug 1... Today Michael Bayley told travel agents he would start from Florida and start with the ships that go to Coco Cay.. Which is pretty much what I guessed and is what Carnival is doing with having 8 ships leave out of Florida and Texas... I think Royal will do exact same thing... I think they will have Symphony, Harmony, Navigator, Independence, Mariner out of Florida and Liberty out of Texas.. I think those are the ships they will start with first.. This is just a guess of course and we need to wait for official announcement but its what I think could happen..

I would assume so.. But the White House has some effect over the CDC.. For instance the no sail order was originally going to be 120 days.. Cruise lines reached out to the White House which then told the CDC to make it 100 days.. As Matt reported the 3 CEO's of Carnival, NCL, and Royal all are on Trump's "Task Force" for how to reopen and business leaders.. So I have a feeling the White House will lean hard on the CDC to not extend unless they really feel they need too..

@Cmaccullen There have been numerous reports that CCL and RCCI have enough to stay down until around 2021. I am not saying they should but it has literally been 2 months and a few days.

It seems like people don't want things done right but done fast. This ordeal has driven home how much of an instant gratification society America is......even countries whose primary source of income is derived from tourism have not been in such a rush.

Italy announce today that they will be opening up for tourist come June/July.  In essence, 90 days after they shut down.    We shut down very shortly after their county.  We would be following their footsteps, but still longer on a shutdown than Italy.

@Pima1988 Italy and all the other countries that are beginning to open up had far more stricter shutdown protocols. Also my point is these countries have more of a reason to open up in a shorter period of time. In America spring break was still going on and many places were open for Easter. I don't believe we actually did shut down....we never did because I could literally do everything I normally would besides eating in an actual restaurant the entire time. We didn't close off state borders, we basically stopped entertainment...that's what travel, sports, dining out and amusement parks are. I live down the block from a barbershop that didn't close until almost Easter and opened up last week. I am not opposed to the country opening up, I am opposed to the rhetoric that "its about time, we cannot wait forever."

A number of people with influence are waking to the thought that the numbers really does not justify continuing these lockdown policies; yet alone, the shutdown of the Global Economy. More & more are speaking against lockdown measures & no doubt, a growing number of regular everyday citizens have as well.

Italy is likely to have a 14 day quarantine period on users from outside the 26 EU countries, so it's only partially opening up and those of us outside these countries will find it difficult to visit, me included, so I'm not expecting my end of June trip on Explorer will happen.?

the numbers? guess you have a different value on the lives pf people obviously not important to you. THese numbers are after a massive lockdown everywhere imagine the results otherwise. The numbers for seasonal flu for some reason has dropped dramatically too.

How can cruising go ahead until there is virtually no cases or a vacine. One person brings it on board and here we go again.

The numbers actually don't support the massive lockdown. We will never have no cases so that is not  reasonable endpoint unless you support a permanent lockdown. Even with a vaccine,  there will never be zero cases. Next year when the flu comes back, does the country go on lock down again? They won't be able to just keep printing money so all the people who don't feel safe can stay home. Just as with the flu, there will be tens of thousands of deaths every year. There always have been and there always will be until they find a cure, if ever. The main problem is this has become political and over sensationalized. If enough people lose their jobs, people go bankrupt, and the government can no longer pay out welfare and social security, then I'm sure we'll see a solution.

I, like many others found the initial models taking into account mitigation (lockdowns) were many times higher in actual deaths than the reality. We can all be thankful for that, but when people started calling accuracy and disproportional response into question, they get vilified. They ask, why are the healthy quarantined especially considering 99+% survivability with the vast majority never noticing a symptom. At some point, I believe people are going to stop acting out of fear and more out of acceptance, and more out of good hygiene and consideration for those at risk at the same time the economy isn't destroyed leading to more problems. It's a giant game of whack-a-mole.

Will there ever be sailings again? Maybe? I hope so...otherwise my current bookings are nothing more than a bank account right now. If the risk to live life isn't taken again due to fear, then, I guess we have to live what we accept. I'm not willing to accept this much longer, although I am thankful that the area where I live has been opening up a lot the last 2-3 weeks and things are starting to flow again.

I don't think the world needs to continue to be in lock down. My issue is the justifications; most of the people who opposes the lock down, never followed protocol at all. They said  "well the survival rate is high, so if I get it ..oh well. I can't close my factory/barbershop/restaurant, etc or it has been close 2 or 3 weeks and now I am financially ruined. This virus is fake news, its political....My freedom......" The initial lock-down was to flatten the curve, to get a protocol to understand how, what, when, where and why. It was never intended to be permanent but given how fast it affected the entire world, things needed to happen. It was never about getting zero cases, just to get it manageable for hospital staffs. The flu killed like 50 million people in the 1+year(s) it lasted; vaccine took 20 years and even now a hundred years later, it still kills an unfortunate amount of people

I love that people seem to believe that people are good, that they will do what needs to be done...in spite of all the contrary evidence. I think the bigger picture is how ill equipped we are as a nation. The average American cannot last 90 days without income, cannot survive 30 days without nonessential services, and could not last 60 days of social distancing. For all the money a business can make, they are always an inch from bankruptcy. Disney just opened and annual pass holders wanted to protest their mask policy. We know this virus spreads by air, from droplets, we don't know if those who had it have immunity. So if you want the country to open up so fast you have to make concessions. I can't wait to cruise...but I want to enjoy my cruise. So I will be patient because I want it right and not fast.
