Balcony or junior suite

Recommended Posts

Independence of the seas

I currently have a balcony room booked hump room center balcony on deck 7

Since this cruise is drastically cheaper then my canceled one I beleive I have enough for a junior suite room.

Which would you go with. I know the junior suites don't come with to many perks but large room sounds appealing to me. No guarantees I can get a jump room for this category though.

@Kcusack89I was on the IOS last year in a hump balcony room and I met my neighbor who had a Junior Suite next to mine...I was in 9340 and they were in JS 9338. They were kind enough to allow us into their room to take a look at  the differences and it’s a much larger room and bathroom. The balcony room can feel squished, especially in the bathroom area and shower,  but the JS is much larger and more like a living room feeling. No jumping around the bed as there is plenty room to walk around in the room. The bathroom is also much larger. The size of a JS is about a balcony and a half room. If the cost is close I would definitely take a Junior Suite over a Balcony hands down. You get double the points and priority embarkation. And, never forget the walk-in closet.

We had a junior suite of Rhapsody earlier this year, our first, loved the extra space in the cabin, especially the bathroom and the extra space at the foot of the bed, think we're hooked. When our end of June cruise get's cancelled (we fully expect it to) we'll be re-booking a JS on our next cruise. Oh and the double points are the icing on the cake ?

I've done window, balcony and junior suite on a few different ships. I will never go back to anything less than a junior suite. with either 2 or 4 people in the room, the extra space and priority boarding is worth the extra money to me. I have family that say you don't spend much time in the room so why does it matter. For me, when I come back from a long day of hard play and excitement I want to stretch out and relax. I don't want to feel like I'm sitting on top of the person/people I'm travelling with. GO with the JS, you won't regret it.

We always book a JS rather than a balcony if the price difference is not too much. Anything up to about 50% extra is acceptable to us. The extra space makes a huge difference. On special occasions, eg anniversary etc, we have gone up to a GS and that gets you a Gold Card and all the additional perks that go with it.

It amazes how those algorithms work sometimes, sometimes it’s barely noticeable on the pricing side. For us on Odyssey next year it’s 2.5x the price.

Sounds to me like you are on the slippery slope to Suite Snob.  Watch out !  It is a powerful force.

@WAAAYTOOO wow that was nice of your neighbors I didn't realize there were some junior suites in the hump too that may be a game changer especially if we can find two next to eachother since we're going with my relatives.

@STANMELB I'm nervous about a JS as once I have it I fear that's the only way I'll cruise ? we thoroughly enjoyed it hump balcony on navigator last year so I'll have to hold onto that memory

Yes, RCI have a different pricing structure on that class of ship. We have booked a GS on the Odyssey for the Transatlantic crossing in April 2021 and it is about 3 times the standard balcony price.

We have been in both 9338 (JS) and 9340 (D1) on different sailings on the IOS. The JS is very much superior and worth the extra money IMO.

Okay okay I think I'm sold on the junior suite since it's covered by my FCC

On my may sailing I had the key booked and we had it last year in navigator and really thought it was worth it.

Question all knowing royalcarribeanbloggers is the key something that still adds value even if we have a junior suite? I know it's not worth it for GS and higher

In general, the consensus appears to be, if you were already planning on purchasing internet for everyone, then the Key is a good value. You will get embarkation lunch from Chops (usually served in the MDR) and have access to reserved seating at the theaters, which are things that JS normally do not get.  There will be a location (usually the main theater) where you can drop off your carry-on luggage at embarkation and it will be delivered to your room.  This is a perk that neither suites nor senior C&A members get !  There are also special reserved times for certain activities (flow rider, etc) but generally I’m not sure this is a perk that many take advantage of.  Then, there is a special disembarkation day breakfast and escort off the ship.  Overall, I think that, for new RC cruisers (someone who has minimal C&A status), the Key is a nice program.

We had the Key on our first cruise last year on Liberty.  We thought it was well worth the value and would purchase again no doubt.  The only thing we didn't take advantage of was the drop off carry on luggage and most of the reserved time slots for activities.  Our carry on had all of our documents, medication ect and I wasn't comfortable handing that over to someone.  The reserved times sound great but its kind of a joke.  They are only for an hour on maybe 1 or 2 days of the cruise depending on the activity.  I did the flow rider 1 day for 1 hour and that was it.  Other than that it was great.  Priority embarkation and disembarkation is amazing!

I’m keeping an eye out for our Odyssey March sailing for pricing to come down. Even balconies were pricy for an obstructed view. So we booked a corner ocean view that is the size of a junior suite.

@WAAAYTOOO You don’t know how bad it’s become...for instance, this year’s Dec 20 cruise is in a Grand Suite on Harmony and my Nov 21 cruise is the worst yet - a Crown Loft Suite on Oasis, 17th floor baby!!! This place is bad for starting you down that road!

We book a variety of room types but it's usually a promenade or balcony.

Last December, DH and I had a balcony booked on Adventure.  The price dropped quite a bit that we were able to switch to a JS for close to our original booking price of the balcony.  Although there is no Coastal Kitchen on that ship or other suite benefits for s JS, we still really appreciated the larger room.  We walked in and felt "wow...so much room".  The regular shower was nice too....and for me, the best was the walk in closet (and space for shoes!) and so many shelving and drawers for our stuff.  So if the price is similar, I'd say go for it.  The additional space is nice (and double points is a bonus too)

That's the thing I'm most sad about when it comes to my canceled Adventure cruise -- not only was I able to upgrade to a JS for a really good price, but it was an aft-facing JS! ? One day, I'm looking forward to the suite life!

To the original poster, I hope you have a wonderful cruise in your junior suite! ?

Similar on Mariner that we are most likely cancelling....we have the aft corner balcony booked on deck 10.  Balcony price but JS size.  Ugh.
