RedRambler
My wife and I are contemplating a spur of the moment cruise on the Liberty, but I have some questions for any previous Galveston cruisers. We live in Indiana so we will be flying in. Is Houston our best/closest airport to the cruiseport? If so it looks like a an hour from cruiseport what type of transportation is the best means for getting there? Where do people stay for pre-cruise hotel?closer to Houston or Galveston? Thanks for your help! ArdmxurTild
PRC
Houston has 2 airports. Most all aitlines will fly into IAH (Bush Int'l) Southwest (and some smaller) will fly into HOU (Hobby) - the smaller airport. Hobby is closer to Galveston by half. transportation from the airports to Galveston Island is the biggest challenge. Being a local (40 min from the pier), I have no advise or experience on this, but I'm sure others here can help you out. Matt
Galveston Steve
You definitely want to fly into HOU (Houston/Hobby). IAH (Houston Intercontinental) is 90 minutes away in good traffic, which isn't likely. As PRC points out, HOU is about half of that, or 45-50 minutes since it is on the south side of the City of Houston. I have an extensive post providing some details related to the questions you asked. I tried to gather a lot of the other information about Galveston from these message boards plus my local knowledge, and you can find that here: http://www.royalcaribbeanblog.com/boards/index.php/topic/568-all-things-galveston-answers-to-your-questions/ PRC
tonyw
We're coming in on July 30 for a July 31 cruise. We're flying into Hobby. Southwest has many flights there. I found the Courtyard Mariott close to the airport has a free shuttle, breakfast and decent rates. We are a group of 12. I did some searching and comparison shopping with the various shuttle and limo services. I found one who will pick us up at the hotel and take us to the port. When we come back, they will pick us up at the port and take us to the space center for a tour and then to the airport. The total cost worked out to be about $55 per person. Wilson
We sailed Liberty the week of April 24th. Great cruise! Michael Vitale
DocLC
I concur with the advice given above. If you can fly into HOU (Hobby), you'll be much happier as it is a smaller, less busy airport and much, much closer. We actually found that renting a car and paying to park it at the port (about $80 for the week) was actually cheaper than paying for shuttle service in both directions. We also spent two nights precruise, so we needed a car for that anyways. And while it seemed odd to be paying for a car to then pay to park it, in the end it was worth it particular with regards to the flexibility it provided us. sulross
DoclC, if you want to save some money, you can park at EZ Cruise parking for about $48.00 for the week. Put in the code and get $20.00 off if you pre pay online. Drop family and luggage off at terminal, park car and walk the short walk back. 10 minute walk. We opted for indoor parking at the one adjacent to the terminal so we didn't need to worry about the rental and so that we could take our luggage directly with us across the street rather than getting into the traffic to try to drop the family and luggage off before parking. Michael Vitale
I use EZ Cruise every time and this last time I took advantage of the "park n walk" offer. It's a 10 minute walk like Sulross said. Great deal. DocLC
