teddy
Tamiflu can work wonders. I hope it's as successful for her as it was for me. I got back to Maine last Saturday night and all of a sudden I felt like a truck hit me. I tested positive for Influenza B Sunday morning and was prescribed Tamiflu. With my doctor's blessing, I went to work today. Tamiflu really lessened the blow. The worst part was the fever and body aches. Controlling those were key for me Sun-Tues. I hope she isn't too miserable. ellcee, Baked Alaska and Trish D

She did get her flu shot, which does help lessen the blow if you do get the flu, and so far she actually is in good spirits. She had a little bit of fever earlier, obviously since that prompted the call from the school nurse, but has been fever free since her MD appointment. Hopefully this will be a really mild case for her. In the mean time, we have stocked up and are prepared! This is genuine question: Please forgive my ignorance, but are Flu shots not paid for in the United States? We assume it is the best way to defend against the Flu Curt from Canada Yup, we all got flu shots. The unfortunate thing about the flu shot is this. There are many different strains of flu virus that cause flu A and B. The vaccine manufacturers have to guess which ones they feel will be most prevalent throughout the year and make the vaccine based off that educated guess. Sometime they get it right, and sometimes they get it wrong. This year was a wrong year. The good thing though is they find that for most people that do get the vaccine, but still come down with the flu they have a much more mild case. This definitely seems to be the case for my daughter. She has tested positive for the flu, but only has had a few hours of mild fever and a mild cough. She seems to be rebounding well and is only mildly symptomatic. Trish D, Big Tule, Ogilthorpe and 2 others 2

Most people get what @emsff02 described above, where they have made their best guess and have a vaccine for that one strain. BUT... There is also a fairly limited supply of what's called a "quadrivalent" vaccine. Instead of being manufactured for just the one strain they think is most likely to be the worst in that year, this version of the vaccine protects against four strains. It's specifically reserved for 3 high-risk population groups -- infants and toddlers with still-developing immune systems; the elderly, whose immune systems just aren't what they used to be and who are physically less able to hold up to the symptoms; and asthmatics, whose respiratory systems get hammered by the common cold and would be much worse off with a full-blown flu infection. Besides being in limited supply, insurance only covers the cost of this option if you fall into one of those three groups. So even if you go to a CVS Pharmacy or Walgreens or other place that just gives out the vaccine to anyone who requests it at the pharmacy counter, they won't give you the quadrivalent without documented proof (in the case of asthma) or if it's just blatantly obvious (age). Both of my parents got the quadrivalent version (or as they like to call it, the Superflu Shot) this year.
