LOTS Halloween 2020

Greetings,

I have been scoping out the blog for almost a year, this is my first post. I have taken 1 cruise with RCCI, last year Jan 14th-19th on Mariner of the Seas. It was my first cruise on an American style cruise ship, I had taken many 1 day and riverboat cruises including a 4 day Nile one on Egypt. I did not really enjoy the cruise but I chalked it up to my companion and their constant complaining. We decided for our family vacation that we would do a cruise this year. My brother and I always travel together as we both can only use vacation from mid October to mid November, I am 35 and he is 37. To round out the party is our 56 yo mother and 79 yo grandmother. I booked us on the Oct 25th to Nov 1st sailing out of Galveston. My grandmother was adamant that she doesn't see water so I booked them a GTY interior room and my brother and I are sharing a GTY balcony. I have been up and down this blog as well as other sites trying to get as much information as possible. It seems like the Liberty is not a popular ship...or maybe the itinerary is less than ideal.

My questions are these..

Do we need to bring costumes...is Halloween celebrated on the ship?

How bad is the smoke in the casino? I am sure that's where the bulk of my grandmother's time will be spent.

What beers are available and does LOTS have the punch card? (neither me or my mother drink, my grandmother is a heavy beer drinker but thought the Deluxe package was too much when she only drinks beer.

Are there a lot of children on the ship during this time?

Thanks in advance?

Yes and yes

Depends, but it will be noticeable.

Same as across the fleet. Bud, Corona, Heineken, Molson, Coors, Michelob Ultra, Guiness, etc.

Impossible to know in advance if it will be offered. I always assume no, because it is rarer to see it these days.

Royal Caribbean is a family cruise line. There will always be a sizeable amount of children, tweens, 20somethings, senior citizens, @Big Dawg Ron aged people and more.

Welcome aboard! I'm sure you'll enjoy Liberty as it is a great ship with tons to do. In fact, it's my favorite ship in the fleet.  Also, Cruise Critic has repeatedly ranked it as one of the 4 best Royal Caribbean ships for several years running.

The downsides of the ship are related to sailing out of Galveston, rather than the ship itself (although it is going in for a major drydock and "amplification" in early 2021, so it may show more wear and tear than normal).

One downside of sailing out of Galveston is the great distance from the port to the Caribbean.  This means sea days at both the beginning and ending of your cruise.

The other issue is the distance to the airport.  If you drive in, it is no problem. If you fly, then it is a 45 minute (if you fly to Houston William P Hobby airport) or 90 minute (if you fly in to George Bush Intercontinental Airport) ride to the port.  There's no public transportation from the airport to Galveston so you'll either need to hire a taxi, UBER, or Lyft or purchase transfers from the cruise line.

I hope this answers your questions.

Have a terrific cruise!

Thanks for all the prompt responses. I saw on cruise critic and a few Youtube videos how lovely the Liberty is but its just seemed like there wasn't as much chatter recently. I can see how the Port could play into that. We are flying from Chicago to Houston and were originally going to stay in downtown Houston for 2 or 3 days before we board the ship. After looking at all the post about Galveston terminal we instead booked a hotel in Texas city. It will be a much shorter Lyft/Uber to the port. Is there any activities aboard the ship and at the ports that you recommend as a much do?

We have the Salsa, Salsa and Margaritas class booked in Cozumel and the Land and Sea excursion booked in the Grand Cayman.

I was so excited to see you mentioned the Salsa, Salsa and Margaritas excursion and booked it. We have cruised a number of times, but this remains one of our favorite excursions. We still use the recipes to make salsa and guacamole we were taught and received that day. We've have been on other cruises and always looked to see if it was offered elsewhere outside of Cozumel. Have fun. I will envy you from afar.

I always enjoyed the water slides and ice shows on Liberty.

As far as a hotel, I'd suggest staying in Kemah.  Texas City is an industrial town without much nearby.

Kemah is located on the bay, has amusements, restaurants, is near NASA, and is just a fun place to use as a home base.  There is a Holiday Inn and a Boardwalk Hotel. Both appear nice and are well located. The ride to the port is longer than Texas City, but still very manageable.
