zjennk
We will be on the Ovation in June and doing the Mendenhall Glacier trail hike. For anyone who has done the hike, what are the best shoes? I was looking at a pair of hiking sneakers but my husband thinks boots.
twangster
The area is a rain forest so expect a lush forest setting. The trails are dirt so if it hasn't rained it would be doable in running shoes. In fact while I wore hiking boots (because I have them) I think my adult son wore running shoes. If there has been rain it will be more muddy but it's not an aggressive hike. No walking through streams or such. I wouldn't recommend running shoes so hiking shoes at a minimum or hiking boots if you own them. Once you reach the visitor's center the trails are fine for running shoes. The National Park Service has done a nice job with it.
Fuzzywuzzy
My wife wore her favorite sneaks and I had on Sketchers and we were both fine.
Matt
I bought a pair of these hiking shoes for my first Alaska cruise. Worked well, although we did not venture off the paths. https://amzn.to/2TjwKYl Going to bring them back for round two in June of this year. AshleyDillo
There are several trails out at Mendenhall but the most difficult ones are still gravel. It was raining when we went. I bought a pair of $30 waterproof hiking sneakers from Bass Pro Shop similar to what @Matt posted and they kept my feet dry and were comfortable enough for walking around. As long as you have a spare pair of shoes, I wouldn't see why regular sneakers wouldn't work. But you definitely want the backup pair in case they get soaked because wet shoes take forever to dry!
