Royal Up Weirdness

So we are going on Liberty of the Seas on Nov 24 out of Galveston and we have two balcony staterooms. It’s my wife, me, my son, and his friend. So I went to the Royal Up website today (did not get an email) and saw there is a Grand Suite 2 bedroom available to bid on.

So I called my travel agent to see if there really is a Grand Suite 2 bedroom available and she confirmed that there is indeed one available but it is not available to be booked by the public or travel agents. It is reserved for Royal Up only and that we have to call Royal directly or just bid on it.

So my wife called Royal and was told that they would not confirm availability of any Royal Up cabins and that we could bid if the website has it available for bidding.

I would think from a business perspective Royal would want to sell that cabin to us if we could negotiate a deal so that they would have two other cabins to sell. But what do I know? I guess when the cruise sails on the 24th of November one way or another all the cabins will be full one way or another.

i guess they must be doing this to make money. There is no other reason not to put up a cabin for sale.

It's possible Royal gets more money through Royal Up plus they can control the succession of upgrades that follow.  JS can be RoyalUp'd to GS freeing up JS for an upgrade.  Balcony bidder can be RoyalUp'd to JS freeing up balcony.  OV can be RoyalUp'd to balcony, etc.  If it's for sale publically an interior cabin could try to grab it and they lose revenue.  This way they can execute 3 or 4 RoyalUp upgrades.

It's also possible there isn't very much muster capacity left and while they could take maybe 3 guests maybe they can't take 4 or 5 in that cabin.  If someone with the existing muster station bids then no problem, or if a guest with 3 guests bids, no problem.  If someone with 4 or more guests bids they can simply ignore the bid.

If they put it up for sale publically and someone with 4 guests wants to upgrade conventionally they'll get upset when told they can't.  "But it's two bedrooms, why can't I book with for 4 guests?"

I honestly hadn’t even though about the muster capacity. Interesting thought

Keep in mind, the Royap Up site is not indicative of actual availability.

There may very well be rooms available, but Royal Caribbean uses Royal Up as a "back up" in case of a last minute cancellation. So it often offers upgrade offers even though there are no available rooms.

Yes I understand Matt. That’s my entire point!  I called my travel agent who confirmed there was a 2br suite available just not one she could book. I didn’t go just on the Royal Up site.
I’m not saying there always is a actual available suite but there sure was in this case.

Hi Everyone! I am leaving on 11/2/19 on Anthem for 7 night Coco Cay & I put in 4 royal up bids over 3 weeks ago and tonite I received my upgrade to an Ocean View with large balcony on the 13th deck.    I was so excited... not only to win it, but it actually existed & I didn't have to wait until the night before to receive this Royal upgrade!

@Matt this should renew some people's faith that it can happen & happen 12 days before the actual cruise!  Yippie!

I leave on my trip this Saturday and still haven't heard anything on my 2 bids. I would soooo love to win, but it's not looking likely ?

You do not have to answer this but what cabin did you have & how much did you bid?

@Flacruiser99

I don't mind at all answering your question.

I had cabin #3576 on the 3rd deck, which was right across from the casino & music hall. It has an ocean view & is 182 square feet.

This was given to me by RC when my original room on the 8th deck (interior with virtual balcony) became $110 cheaper than what I had originally paid.

They could not give me a lower rate cause my room was paid for in full & it was less than 90 days before sailing.

So..... after accepting this upgrade... I had second thoughts because of the exact location & decided to do a royal upgrade bid.

Well... I learned a hard lesson here...

I did not know that the bid I made for 440 was going to be charged double to me (even though I am traveling alone)

So.. to get this new room on the 13th deck with a large balcony... it actually is costing me $ 880.00.

If I was intelligent enough to realize that my bid was going to be doubled, I may not have bid that high.

My total cost for this room now comes to $ 2,277.00 (this includes tips & taxes).

It's not that I could not afford it, and it's still not such a bad price for traveling alone & having a ocean view with a large balcony (177 square feet).

This new room on the 13th deck is under the Windjammer from what I can tell.

Oh well.. this room may not be that much better, but that is the chance you take when you do a Royal Up Grade bid! ?
