Passenger caught on ocean side of Allure balcony .... 10/13 sailing

Recommended Posts

If the unthinkable happened to this woman, her family would hire a lawyer to ask, "Why would there be an unsecured area on a balcony where people can fall off?" Why would you have the danger without any warning, sign, or notice?”  (I'm looking at you, Mr Winkleman)

Then people who know nothing about cruising would rant all over social media demanding Royal to put up barriers on open decks and balconies!

The family would post pictures of her hanging from monkey bars saying how much she loved doing it.

I can only wonder why she thought to do this....why put yourself in any potential position to more easily get hurt?  I wouldn't even want to attempt this.  Unfortunately @PG Cruiser I think you are right....if something bad had happened we'd have people saying that balconies need to be enclosed in some way....which is silliness!

The scale of the picture still seems off to me.  The distance between the railing and the next deck above isn't the height of a normal grown adult, male or female.

Maybe she's extremely tall? But you are right....now looking at it again it does seem rather strange.

The picture was taken by another passenger who was multiple cabins await according to the article ......... it’s like when you take picture from a distance at the Leaning Tower of Pisa and make it look like you’re holding it up

Where she is standing there is a ledge and there is none above her or below her.  That is a doctored picture!

She is on the balcony railing.  The white "wall" are just the opaque balcony dividers.  The quality of the photo and zooming in makes it appear as though she is standing on a lip on the other  of her balcony.

In your examples the people are close to the camera while the tower is far away from the camera.  They take advantage of a concept called perspective.  That's not the case in the balcony photo.

In the balcony photo the person is standing on the railing with another foot of clearance between her head and the ceiling.  Seems off to me.

This is not fake news.  The person first posted on FB and was told to report her.  He showed the picture to RCCL staff and they figured out which cabin she was in.  They confronted her and then she was ordered to stay in her cabin until the next port.  She was escorted off of the Allure in Nassau Bahamas this morning and is permanently banned from any RCL (corporate wide) ship.

There are so many unknowns here:  the exact position of the camera taking the photo, the distance and angle to the subject (perspective as @twangster points out),  the camera lens magnification, photo date, photo edits, etc.  Without knowing these things the photo could in fact be real or not.  Without knowing we are all just guessing.  The photo could have been taken years ago.  Who would ever know...

Where did you get this info from?

Rear of the ship and one floor above the lifeboat seems like the location based on orientation. The steel formed into a cylinder can be seen in the pic and is not as pronounced anywhere else on the ship as far as I can tell. Something is off with the photo.

This is my guess for her location.  It's a corner location in those staterooms/balconies that stick out on the side of the ship. The cylinder looking thing below her are actually a row of balcony dividers.

EDIT:  I contacted the guy who (allegedly) took the picture. He said he was on the Starboard side, taking the picture from the Aft "hump". The woman was on the Forward "hump"

A reasonable explanation as to perspective.  I am guessing she is was on deck 7.  Does that seem right?

I thought it was Cozumel.

#fakenews unless this individual is 10’ tall.

USA TODAY printed this story ..... and even has a response from Royal Caribbean  ..... so it has to be true.  See the story at the link below:

Quote from the article:

“Earlier this week on the Allure of the Seas a guest was observed recklessly and dangerously posing for a photo by standing on her stateroom balcony railing with the help of her companion," Jonathon Fishman, corporate reputation manager for Royal Caribbean Cruises, told USA TODAY in an email.

Also, according to the article ..... it was Falmouth, Jamaica where they were kicked off the ship.

I think the angle at which the photo was taken created an optical illusion with the balcony on the hump, making her look 10' tall.

Yes, like many have said it this thread, the perspective of this photo (and the fact that photos don't show depth of field like our eyes do) gives it a flat depth making it look wrong to our eyes.  If there was more detail in the photo [depth of field], or if it have been shot from a different position [perspective], we might interpret the photo differently.

‘Yes, please share that story .....

@ChrisK2793 & @wstephensi.  Let me first start with LESSON LEARNED:

  • When on a cruise ship, if you, a loved one, a friend, or a passenger are involved in an incident DO NOT try to handle it yourself!  Security is everywhere, often much closer than you might think, so your ONLY involvement should be to seek them out for help.

Please please learn from me and DO NOT DO what I did!  My Elevator story has a lot of facets which make it a rather long story so I will keep it as brief as possible by leaving out many details.  Hope it is understandable...

Our 121028 Freedom cruise was a partial charter by the https://www.highseasrally.com group.  In talking to members of the group we learned there were over 2000 of them.  So they easily out numbered us.  Suffice to say (and you can read my related posts in the link below) that this cruise was unlike ANY of our over 30 cruises - very unlike!  On the second night (Formal) five of us boarded an elevator going down to dinner (my wife, my sister, and two friends).  The elevator was nearly full and at our first stop there was a man and a woman in a wheelchair.  They were together and he was carrying both of their glasses of red wine.  We did our best to squeeze them in and at our next stop going down it became apparent the man was already having a very good time for himself.  At that stop we found more people on their way down to dinner.  With barely any room left in our elevator, the man invited more people on.  We squeezed in two more, but my sister got stepped on.  This was a really bad situation for her as she had recently had foot surgery and still had temporary pins in her foot.  So we politely, but quickly try to explain this to man and asked him to not move any further back. This is where he became belligerent as he either did believe us or just did not care about us.  It seemed to us like we were not going to stop his fun.  Two more stops and he and his wife got off for dinner (thank goodness).  The five of us were in a back corner of the elevator.  As the door was closing a passenger next to me (who I did not know) broke the camels back by shouting to the man something like "good riddance and take your wine with you".  So just before the door closed the man threw both red wines into the corner of the elevator where we were standing.  We all got the wine on us, but my sister took the brunt of it.  We were all really pissed by this point and no one more than I.  My sister did not deserve that.  She wears very nice clothes to formal night dinners.  The next elevator stop was ours just one floor down from the couple's so I made the decision to run up one flight to confront him.  THIS is where I should have found security!  Anyway we both got into it, both ended up in sick bay, and both ended up getting dis-embarked two days later in Jamaica.  When security talked to my wife and I, they make it very clear that I would NOT be banned for life, so that made me think that the other man may have been.  FYI: All decisions of this type are completely up to the ship's captain.  Thank You Captain for having some mercy on me.  ?

Four of my group got off in Jamaica and two of us stayed on the ship.  So my sister asked "Art you just thrown off a cruise ship, what are you going to do now?"  I said "Let's go to Disney World" and we did...

See here for a small discussion on partial charter cruises...
