I know it's fine to tip Porters, housekeeping , MDR staff, bartenders and even local tourist guides in US dollars in the Caribbean. Is it acceptable to tip extra in US dollars while cruising out of the UK and EU?

Would be the same as EU citizens tipping in € or £ while in US

Cruiseship crew get paid in $$ into their bank accounts back home, the tips they receive onboard allows them to venture onshore with money in their pockets, as the $$$ is not a recognised currency in Europe any tips they receive in $$$ cannot be spent onshore.

Not being able to spend tip money on shore might be a good thing :)

At the end of the day I think most crew will take whatever you are willing to give.  They have means to exchange it if they so choose.

I tipped bartenders on the ship with US singles and they were very pleased.  They don't get many tips when in Europe so they were very appreciative to get something in any currency.

As far as tipping off the ship, I'd try to use local currency when possible.

Thank you. After thinking about it I think you are absolutely correct. It would be bummer If the crew didn't have means to exchange currency. Ship departs UK= Ponds, 4 ports= Euros, ship arrives in Miami in 3 weeks=dollars.

I wouldn't feel the need to tip in pounds just because the ship departs from the UK if the stops are otherwise mainly EU.  The crew may not get much chance to actually venture off the boat in the UK since turnaround day is so intense.

Just don't tip dollars (except to crew) while in ports in Europe!  I see dollars in tip jars sometimes and it's cause for major eye rolls.

While in Europe I tipped in US$ and in Euros it did not matter to most of the crew. If they were not able to get off the ship in the EU they would trade with other crew members.  I would tip our room attendant in US$ and asked her if there was anything she would like in port as a treat.  It was usually some form of chocolate, and she was so appreciative for those bars.

Having just left Jewel 9 night in Europe I tipped in US $1's the whole cruise.  I didn't see a single passenger the whole cruise tip in cash, perhaps they were giving tips on receipt.  The crew was very happy with the tips and the drinks kept coming.

@mpoole3 saw in your post that you are diamond plus. Id be interested in knowing what your thoughts of Jewel are. We are looking at a Baltic Itenerary on Jewel or one of the newest Princess ship, Sky Princess. It is 141,000 tons coming in a little larger than Voyager class and quite a bit  larger than Jewel. We have always traveled on Royal Caribbean so I’m torn. TIA

Jewel was my last cruise honeymoon in Europe 9/24 sailing.   The cruise was my favorite hands down, all the ports were amazing.   Being said, I won't go rushing back to Jewel of the Seas.  The old nascar bar vs pub beside the casino was pretty bad.  Also Jewel doesn't have an R Bar like her sisters, just a small bar with 5 seats, not make or break things just feel like Explorer would be a better option for my next Europe cruise.
