Car rental options at Fort lauderdale

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

How's it going? Don't normally post on boards but genuinely no idea on this.

So my family and I are lucky to be doing b2b2b in April with changeover in Fort lauderdale.

I would like to hire a car on 2 of the changeovers to go to lauderdale by the sea and saw grass mall. I believe I have to be back on ship for 3.30pm. What time can we get off and will we have enough time for these trips?

Any recommendations for car rentals near the port? How often do shuttles run etc...

Many thanks in advance

We did this on a recent B2B but it was on NAV out of Miami.  I can't imagine that FLL would be much different.  It was super easy in Miami.

We rented a car from National with points.  There was a rental car bus at the port when we got there, which took us to pick up our car.  We just had to show them the reservation so that they knew we weren't just trying to get a free ride to the airport.  Then after we were done with the rental, we did the opposite.  We had to show the bus driver our receipt and then the bus took us back to the port/ship.  SOO easy.

I can't answer the question about how frequently the bus runs back and forth but my experience in Miami was that they run very frequently in the morning and early afternoon, but probably not all day.  To be safe I would probably suggest that you try and be back to the ship by around 1:00.  You can check with the bus driver when they pick you up to ask when the last bus comes back to port.

There's an Alamo located at Port Everglades. It's very convenient. I have never picked it up AT the pier, but I have certainly dropped it there (flown in the day before, picked up an Alamo car at FLL airport, dropped it next day at port, and they shuttled us to the ship). They may be the only one actually at the port, I am not sure. But it's really very convenient.

You should have enough time to do one on each changeover.  Lauderdale by the Sea and Sawgrass Mills are about 30 minutes from the port with no traffic.

If you don't need the car rental for anything outside of transportation (i.e. you don't want to visit anything else really) you can get an Uber/Lyft between Port Everglades and your destination for less than $25 each way.  That may end up being cheaper than a car rental.

There are a few car rental places near the port.  For time and cost sake I would avoid renting from the airport locations as the rental usually has an airport access fee added to the total.

Alamo is the closest to the port.  They do have shuttles.  Not sure of the frequency but I personally would catch a taxi/rideshare if I didn't immediately see a shuttle when I got off to make the most of my time.  Getting back if you allow yourself enough time you can take the shuttle.

If you are planning on getting off the ship on turnaround day, make sure you talk to someone the day before so you can find out what you need to do in order to get your card for the next leg of the cruise.  Typically the B2B folks meet and are escorted on and off the ship after all the passengers have gotten off and before boarding begins.  If you want to leave before that, you need to make sure you have what you need to get back on the ship.

Your expending valuable time & effort renting a car. Use Uber or Lyft. Are you just going to Fort Lauderdale beach or heading North to Commercial Blvd & A1A (AKA Lauderdale by the sea)? In either scenario, rental or Uber/Lyft you will have plenty of time. LBTS is a 15 min Uber from Port and Sawgrass Mills is about 25 minutes. Parking at the mall is a pill and Uber suits you better here. Good luck.
