Lockers on ship

We are sailing on Explorer soon. Does anyone know if there are lockers on the ship to store bags while swimming?

We are hoping to get in the pool and hot tubs after boarding before muster but we don't want to leave our bag with passports and money in on chairs while we are swimming.

You don't take passports out of your stateroom safe while on the ship--unless you are instructed to provide them to Guest Services or a government agent.  You also don't need cash on the ship except for an occasional tip -- most tips are paid on your Seapass.   The best Seapass holders are the phone sized ones to use at the beach or on an excursion.  We don't leave phones by the pool/hot tub, but some folks do.

When leaving the ship at port, some folks take passports but most just take ID and Seapass, but that is why you want the phone-sized, waterproof plastic holders.  You never in port leave your key documents unattended.

Hi there @MikeS. I get the worry about leaving your stuff lying around for someone to grab. I live in NJ and very close to NYC, and I've learned from an early age to be paranoid about leaving stuff lying around. But after sailing a couple of cruises, this is one of the rare times when I try to be a bit more positive about the people surrounding me. A few reasons:

  • Everyone, crew and passengers, has had their photo taken for ID purposes; the ship's security knows who you are and who everyone else is
  • The ship is quite literally covered in security cameras, including the pool deck area; there is pretty much nowhere you can go that you wouldn't be seen, certainly not in the public spaces
  • Every passenger paid to be on that ship, and likely paid a pretty penny; I find it hard to see how someone would willingly put their vacation at risk, especially on embarkation day, by taking a random bag from a stranger in the hope they'd score some cash brought on board for the casino or tip money
  • This doesn't mean a kleptomaniac can't book a cruise and board the ship, but see the first two bullet points for their odds of successfully pulling off any petty larceny while on board

So I would say that in this particular situation, it's OK to leave your personal bag on a lounger without cable-tying it to the frame or securing it in a padlocked bag. If you want to keep in sight while you're in the pool, that's fine. But I think the worst that might happen is someone moves your bag thinking you're just another chair hog, and instead of leaving it on the lounger they put your bag next to it.

If that's just not OK for you, you can always wait until your room becomes available around 1 PM, put your cash and documents in the safe, and then go an enjoy the pool until muster later in the afternoon. And before then you can take the time to explore the ship, grab some lunch, and enjoy a cocktail at one of the bars.
