Chops Grille

I have been on several RC cruises, but I have never been to Chops (crazy I know). I am trying it on my upcoming cruise to Canada/New England and was hoping someone could let me know what the recommended dress code is. From my research it seems similar to the main dining room, but I don’t want to be under or over dressed.

Also I am completely open to suggestions as to what is the best food to order because it seems like it will be difficult to choose!

I don’t think you have to dress any different than you would then at the MDR. For men, nice pants and a shirt with a collar. No tie or jacket required.

I always order steaks and have been very happy. My wife eats seafood and also has been happy as well. No complaints from the food when we have gone. Everything has been good.

Thank you! That’s what I figured but it’s always good to check.

Just to add, we have done two RC cruises before and didnt know this, I only found out recently on here, you can order more than one starter or desert if you like in the MDR and speciality restaurants. We are on Adenture of the seas in October and am defiantley going to be ordering the Carpaccio and Black Pepper Bacon in chops ?

You can also have things from the MDR brought to Chops.  I order the French Onion soup and have it brought to Chops.  Saw another lady order multiple orders of escargot at chops, no problem.

The one thing I would def. try at Chops is their fried goat cheese salad as your starter.    If you have never had goat cheese it is very mild in taste, and it is considered a soft cheese.  I don't know if it was our servers on our cruises, or the fact we were groups of (5-10 depending on the cruise).  They will bring you as many sides as you want.  So if you want every single side they will bring them all.   We have never done Chops just my hubby and I so I don't know if that is the case.  Since, we were always in a large group the wait staff just said, how about we just bring you every side.  We are not mac n cheese kind of people, so we passed on that, instead they brought us more mushrooms and asparagus.

  •   I eat to live, but my family lives to eat.  On Adventure in July with my family, I swear I got full just listening to them order their meals.  They basically made it into a 5 course meal.  App, soup, salad, entree and dessert.  We ate in Chops 2x.  Our waitress also brought out the spicy shrimp entree for the table to shar on top of what we ordered.  For dessert on the 1st night she said, I am just going to bring out every dessert on the menu for you to share if you guys would like that instead.  They all agreed.  It was really so much food to the nth degree.
  •  I would also say if you like Red Velvet cake this is the dinner you want to order it.
  •  We ate at Chops night 3.  I love the MDR prime rib,  night 1.  Night 2 was their lamb shank (my favorite).  So by night 3 I was on meat overload.  I ordered the branzino, and it was absolutely perfect.  I opted this because for me when it comes to fish, it can be bad really quick.  My group teased me...go to a steakhouse and she orders fish.  My hubby did the filet.  He thought his was perfect until I said take a bite of the branzino.  He turned to me and our table, and said OMG that is out of this world.  From there everybody else said, can I have a bite?  They all agreed the fish was ahhhhmazing and would order that in a heart beat.

My husband and I dressed like if we were going to Ruth Chris.  My husband and every man in our group wore a collared shirt and slacks, some wore a sports coat and polo.  The women wore what you would see at church on Sunday.  I don't recall anybody in shorts....however, I am sure there were people in nice dress shorts, but the table clothes come down low so you really don't see if they are in dress shorts or pants.  For me, I wore a maxi dress with dressy flip flops  and a cardigan one night and did not feel out of place.. The 2nd night I wore linen type capri pants, a silk type shirt and again another pr of dressy flip flops (that was the white night party)  Still did not  feel uncomfortable or out of place.

@mcoler18  If you are going to eat in the MDR often,  and like the wedge salad that Chops offers,  just tell your waiter the night before and they will have it there for you.  The MDR does offer the wedge salad at least 1x during the cruise, but it is not a staple on their nightly menu, whereas it is on Chops.  I never eat the wedge in Chops because I like the goat cheese, but I eat it every night in the MDR since I like it more than the Caesar.

You will love Adventure.  It is an amazing ship.  I would contact Royal or your TA and ask for either a window table or a balcony.

Great thank you, could you get the Carpaccio brought to the MDR, or anything else of the Chops menu?

Yes, you can get multiple apps, sides and desserts, but only one entrée. Everything is great. I really enjoyed the lamb chops.

@mcoler18  They do offer carpaccio in the MDR.  I think that was the formal night.  The thing is the carpaccio is different not only in the MDR. but also in Chops and Giovannis/Jaimies regarding how it is plated, the wedge salad in the MDR is identical to Chops, whereas the carpaccio in the MDR is not like Chops, so I really can't answer that question.

  •  IE Giovannis carpaccio is served with a pesto, and Chops is not, nor is the MDR.  We had it at each restaurant and MDR.  They were all wonderful, but all different.

It doesn't hurt to ask.  My guess, and it Is only a guess, that the answer would be most likely NO.

Off topic, but I would say that 1 dining option many don't do is impo the best.  The bottomless galley brunch.  We do it on the last sea day.  You get a tour, and it is not always the same parts of the galley.  You will see some show pics of escargot being made, some show the desserts.  After the tour they bring you back into the MDR.  Everytime we have done it, every table had a window table.  I want to say maybe 50 passengers did it, they broke us down to groups of 15-20 people.  The brunch menu is something that is not offered on the ship, such as lox, Belgium waffles, beef filet, etc.  Again you can order an app, a salad, a soup, the entrée and the dessert.

Finally, I would say, if the budget stretches, do the Chefs table.  It is limited in number,, maybe 12-15 people per night.  It is 3 hrs.  You meet up at a certain bar, and the maitre'd/sommelier for the night will greet you and escort you to the table.   For us it has always been 6:30.   It is a 6 course meal.  The wine is paired with the dish.  The Maitre'd/sommelier will explain to you why that wine was selected.  They will explain to you the undertones of the wine.  Nothing on this menu will be offered on the ship.  It is great because it is a small group so you get to meet more people you might not have ever met.

  •  Our July Menu
  • Scallop Carpaccio with yuzo vinaigrette
  • Smoked Tomato Soup with garlic focaccia croutons
  • Maine Lobster salad with hearts of palm, pineapple, cilantro and vanilla dressing
  • Roasted Branzino.  Grilled zucchini, peppers, lemon confit and pest
  • Grilled Filet Mignon with truffle potato puree, and asparagus
  • The World...this is the Wonderland dessert.  Adventure does not have Wonderland so  this was a unique dessert.

We used our OBC for this meal, and it was worth it.  For us, we enjoy a leisurely dinner over going to a show.  We did this on the 70s night, which is my favorite night.  We were done, went back to the room and changed, and still had enough time to get a good place to dance.

How about Specialty to specialty?  My wife love the Tiramisu cake that is served at Giovanni's, can she ask for it at Chops?

Yes.  I have done the opposite many times (asked for red velvet cake from Chops when dining at Giovanni’s)

As I learned from @WAAAYTOOO, I have done that too.  Asked for Chops Red Velvet Cake to be served at Jamie's.  Make sure you show your appreciation to the waiter though. ?

That's fantastic.  We only have one specialty dining (maybe Chops), but the Raspberry Rippled Pavlova and Amalfi Lemon Meringue Cheesecake from Jamie's has me drooling.  I thought we might have to splurge and dine at both places, but only the desserts appeal to me.

Just wondering if the staff find it too much work though? (they already have enough to do).

Definitely will show our appreciation @Lovetocruise2002 ?
