Smoking in Casino

Recommended Posts

That would be awesome, I love to play the slots but my time is limited by the smoke smell (Sometimes it's limited because I run out of money....). I think it was on Grandeur that they had these smoke eaters...kind of a humidifier looking thing that filtered the air, they had 5 or 6 of them in the casino and it was better but NO SMOKING would be best.

10 days ago I had a one day connection in Hong Kong , due to the current situation there I decided to take a ferry to Macau . I found out that they  ban smoking in the casinos  few month ago. Let's see the revenue impact if  at all as if in Macau they can stop casino smoking successfuly they can for sure do it on RCL ships.

Celebrity is already smoke-free in the casino, wouldn’t surprise me if sister line Royal was contemplating it. I’m sure they have before-and-after numbers on the nightly take when they made that switch, and can make a good guess how Royal line casinos would fare in comparison.

I would be surprised...if they make more money smoke free, why haven't they done it yet. I am guessing in the long haul, smokers spend more there than non-smokers. Based on the fact alone that it's the only place inside to smoke. Smart on Royals part that way really.

I am sure in time it will change...but still a lot of smokers that cruise. Noone is happy with changes...I think perhaps certain times of day going smoke free would be a good comprise.

Be interesting to see what happens when they do try to implement a change like that.

We'd welcome the change also, even though we rarely gamble on the ship.  It never fails, we always end up walking through there trying to get someplace else on the ship.  We always figure it out and avoid it the next time though.  On Harmony it was fairly isolated and avoidable.  On Independence I remember the smell on the Promenade where the stairs come up.

We live outside Atlantic City and going smoking-free has been tried and didn't last long.  There are now specific areas for smoking on each casino floor, but unfortunately they're all connected to the non-smoking areas, makes no sense.  Unfortunately it causes us to avoid the resorts altogether even though there are non-gaming and family friendly experiences we could enjoy.  It's just impossible to avoid.

I would agree smokers spend more time in the casino then non-smokers. That is only because the smell runs us out. There is always the one smoker who let their cigarette burn in the ashtray or hold the cigarette in their hand away from their face but toward you.  I loved a casino, but my time depends on the amount of smoke.  Get rid of the smoke, more people would stay longer and play.

Not sure about that....non smokers yes...but the smokers no...

You have to know that IF it would benefit Royal financially they would have done it long ago....so obviously they know that current status makes them more money.

Wow !  I can’t imagine non smoking being very successfully anywhere is Asia and particularly in Macau !  Almost all men smoke from what I remember. It’s been a few years but - WOW. Very interesting.

That would be a definite plus if they would eliminate the smoking.  On our last cruise we didn't gamble at all because of the smoke and almost got sick walking thru the casino because fo the smoke.  And on Adventures of the Seas it doesn't stay in the casino, it was rising up into other areas of the ship.  Would love if they would eliminate the smoking in the casino  before our Allure of the Seas in December with the family.

I thought that way also. We have 3 casino's here that are smoking, and 1 casino across the border that is non-smoking. No matter what time I go (and it is a bit of a drive), it is just as packed as the smoking casino's. They do offer a smoking lounge that is not connected and it has those air tight doors so smoke cant get through. It would be nice if Royal came up with a happy medium, so they can equally take money from both smokers and non-smokers.

Smokers seem to adjust. They tend to start off kicking and screaming but they adjust. When states all over the country started making smoking inside illegal. Smokers cried it would drastically hurt the bar & restaurant business but it didn’t. When cruise lines banned smoking first in cabins, then balconies and most indoor areas. The smokers still cruised. If they ban smoking in casino the smokers will adjust and still gamble. Only about 15% of the US population smokes any more. Non smoking casinos are coming just a matter of when!

Time will tell , currently there is some decline in the revinew but not sure it's connected , I guess in a year or two we will know . For now it looks like every casino open smoking lounge in each corner , did not checked it so not sure how it works.

They tried in Atlantic City with super modern Ravel Casino which was 100% non smoking. It bankrupt after two or three years . I always think Royal need to try on one of the big ships non smoking Casino to see how it is going.

As a former Atlantic City casino employee, let me tell you unequivocally that there were approximately 423,654 things that were more influential in the Revel going under than their smoking policy...

Never mind the casino, it should be banned on the pool deck! I was dismayed that there is a designated area for smoking in such a busy area of the ship. The more ostracised the smoking community becomes, the better [apologies to all smokers, nothing personal].

Never understood why they are allowing it in the big ship , they can restrict it to the deck above or even better to smoke lounge not were so many childrens are passing all the time

Totally agree. Nearly half the pool deck is effectively off-limits for me due to smoke aggravating my asthma.

EXACTLY why we didn't go to the casino on our Radiance cruise this past July. And guess what, we didn't miss the casino AT ALL!

I don't see why they allow it at all any more, except for the fact that the only place you can smoke is by the slot machines.  Slots equates to lots of money from the house perspective.  No smoking at the bar, or the tables.

I can stand the smoke smell.  Many times the quickest route from point A to B is through the casino.  After a few days I turn to my hubby and say I am okay with taking a longer route.  Usually this is on sea days.

Don't get me wrong, I am a smoker when I have had a few drinks, but I go out on deck, where the air is circulating.

Something others never bring up, but maybe my nose is super sensitive.  It is not just the smoke that is bothersome, but the casino smells like a day old distillery.   Think about it, the amount of drinks spilled on the floor into the carpet,, mixed with ashes from the cigarettes that missed the ash trays. The 2 combined burns my nostrils.

I complain every time on the survey they send out after your cruise.

Last year on Freedom we had a group of 8. None of us wanted to go to the casino because of the smoke. We wanted to, but couldn’t stand it. RCI lost 8 gamblers on that trip.

Sitting outside the British pub on the Promenade, the smoke comes right up the stairs.

I really hope they ban it.

Imagine how many gamblers they will lose when they ban it though....I dont smoke myself but alot of people are drawn into the casino because thats one of the only places in the world you can smoke indoors anymore.

The question that always confuses me. Reading that people who smoke in the US is at 14%. So why do the remaining 86% of us have to tolerate second hand smoke or skip a venue because of the heavy smoke that pours out of a casino. When Illinois went non smoking all you heard was bars and night spots would go out of business because of smoking ban. Yeah right their business suffered no side effects and in some cases doubled. So Royal needs to follow Celebrity and kick smoking off of cruise ships.

They didn't kick smoking off the ships..just the casino.

Smoking rates vary from state to state..15-20%

So 15-20% of the ship should be smoking area to be fair??....:8_laughing:

I hear the pollution from the smoke stacks on cruise ships is amazing and probably leads to as many deaths as second hand cigarette smoke..better stay off those pool decks too!..

One cruise ship spews more pollution than a million cars in ONE day....I would be more worried about that...imagine less than 1% of the worlds population that cruise hurting the other 99% of people...talk about not fair!.....hmmm

These discussions always remind me of these political activists and celebrities and politicians who try to tell us how bad and wrong we are and how we need to save the environment and cut back on things and pay more in taxes to off set all the bad.....while they fly to these meetings on private jets and live in their massive mansions....lmao

Please don't smoke anywhere near me so I can enjoy my vacation  on a cruise ship that's spewing tonnes of toxins into  the air......lol....:34_rolling_eyes:

I just wish Royal had better handling of smoking in the smoking allowed areas.  Better air handling in the casino so that non smokers wouldnt be choked out.  Of course I'm sure there would be some that would pass within 5 miles of a smoker and be wildly waving arms in protest, but there has to be a happy medium to be had with the smoking.  A smoking allowed and a non smoking casino could be an option.  Though that option would take up valuable ship real estate to have 2 casinos so maybe a bar would have to be eliminated or a specialty restaurant gone or rooms gone just to have a smokers or a non smokers casino... not sure if that's feasable.  What would be though would be better air handlers, so that the smoke doesnt waft out of the casino and anywhere even remotely close to the casino.

As for pool deck smokers, I'm not sure what would be an agreeable solution.  Maybe one day Royal will see how one of the smaller ships does as a non smoking cruise.  No smoking anywhere.  See what kind of reaction they get to the non smoking cruise.  If its successful, great!  If not, then its a business decision to keep smoking areas due to the ship losing money from smokers.  I cant imagine that a non smoking cruise would not be successful though.

IMHO - I think it would be. There are far less smokers than there ever were and a lot more people who vape (which can be hidden, also not saying it's right). Outside of Penn Station or any other hugely crowded public area there used to be tons of smokers...there are less and less as time goes on. This would suck for the current smokers if they had a non smoking cruise but I don't think business would be hurt if this was an option in the future.

Yeah but that wouldn't go down very well. They would struggle to get the smell out of the ship. Have you ever stayed in a cabin where the people before you clearly smoked in their room? I have and it's very unpleasant as a non-smoker myself.

To be honest, its unpleasant as a smoker to smell stale smoke in a room.  I'm more than content to go to a designated smoking area.  All I ask is for some shade, that its not in a dark dangerous alley, and that there's somewhere to sit.  I'm rather easy to make happy with smoking.  I'm not going to smoke on my balcony, I'm not going to smoke anywhere other designated areas, because we all have to exist in the same space.  Smokers and nonsmokere, vegans and carnivores, rock and roll, etc.
