The Serenade of the Seas (Radiance class) is going through the Panama Canal next May in order to transition to the Alaska/Australia markets. This is the largest ship that Royal has sent through as far as I have been able to research. All others have been Vision class or smaller. I have thought and still do think that this is a trial run for Royal's larger ships. If so then the west coast 2021 plan could be Voyager class or larger if all goes well next May. That's exactly the problem with California cruising, nowhere to go but the same ports. Voyager or any Royal ship will bring some relief and sneak away some cruisers from Carnival brands in the short term just so they can try something different but it will be the same ports. Millennium is coming over early to do some free first responder cruises then they added some Pacific Northwest and Alaska cruises starting April 20. Rates are pretty good, $349 pp for 5 nights. Verandah, Concierge and Aqua class are all the same price at $499 pp. Plus she is recently revolutionized. IRMO12HD

GlowTheWeird
I just went to the Royal app and see what you are saying with Quantum being for 2020. Yes! I don’t blame them for moving out of Asia for the time-being either... I would think getting this planned logistically so close would be tough. Port schedules etc. maybe some good pricing will come of the short notice for cruisers...While Royal will certainly take a hit financially with these changes... some awesome intro/last minUte pricing may be exactly what they need to get locals out in this west coast market introduced to the cruise line...Carnival is so popular out here.. blah. Could be doing first responders but like when Empress and Majesty lost Cuba they sold those ships at ridiculously low rates and offered a lot of casino comps to fill the ships. There was no single supplement and I added 6 cruises to my resume as a result. Better to minimize losses and cover some operating costs such as crew costs through daily gratuity charges plus a good way to shake up the west coast cruise industry with a cold weather ship in a colder ocean in the spring. Quantum class is a good fit for CA cruising in the spring. I also think people spend more on board when they get a bargain on the cruise fare. Why not splurge on a beverage package or dining when the cruise cost so little? Baked Alaska, GlowTheWeird, IRMO12HD and 1 other

I suspect the interim shipyard visit they have planned for Voyager is to install the interface to accept shore power, a new requirement for ships in CA. That's not a simple task as the power on a ship is a closed system that was never intended to be routinely switched over to shore power.
