Frequency of Alcohol Fuelled Incidences

Recommended Posts

Thank you for all the input that was given to my last question. It set my mind a lot more at ease.

Another thing that has been on my mind is wondering what the incidence level might be of alcohol fuelled problems?.... It just seems to me... looking at the drinks package, that RC encourages excessive drinking and while some people can drink and not bother anyone, other people seem to have a short fuse when they consume too much alcohol... so I'm wondering to myself... "hmmm  how much trouble is there on board, due to excessive drinking?"  I suppose it's easier to move away from trouble on a ship, rather than in a plane, but still it is a more confined environment than on land.

Perhaps experienced cruisers can give their opinions and experiences in this department?

On 14 cruises I have experienced only one alcohol related problem -- the occupant of the room next to us was a drunk who yelled and shouted, often from his balcony.  He did this by himself, so there was no brawl or argument involved.  We probably should have complained to Guest Services, but we basically let it go.  Balance this against all of the nice people we have met, and I would say that our cruises have been rather peaceful...

Security steps in pretty quick and usually most people won't even know there is a problem.  In May one lady who we were friendly with lost her alcohol package for 24 hours because she could not make it back to her cabin alone and security had to help her.  She is elderly and enjoyed a few too many.  She waited out her 24 hours and then was more careful.  She really is a nice lady.  We've heard stories of others losing it for the rest of the cruise because they caused and issue.

They will turn over people to local police at the next port or the home port if they cause an alcohol related issue.  December 2019 a guy and his step-son got into it when the step-dad was pretty lit.  RCCL wouldn't allow the dad back in the cabin because the son was a minor, dad had to "find somewhere else to sleep" and when we arrived back at Ft. Lauderdale the police met the ship and did interviews.  No charges were filed.

Our second May cruise security spent the night outside a cabin reading.  The must have restricted the passenger to their cabin for the remainder of the cruise.

The types of incidents that make the news are few and far between.  Things can happen with or without alcohol when people perceive someone has done them wrong.  On an increasing basis people are easily offended when they see something that isn't their way of living.  A few people drinking and talking loudly in a hot tub is just good fun and enjoyable to some people but downright outlandish and god forsaking to someone who doesn't drink based on their religion.

I was on a cruise over Super Bowl and didn't observe any outlandish drunken behavior or fights yet people went into a FB group to complain "drunken people were all over the place wreaking havoc on their vacation the whole cruise".

Just to clarify, in case anyone might think I have a stick up my arse... not saying you do think that, but I can see my post could be construed in such a way. I'm pretty easy going, open minded and non judgemental.  I do, however, dislike people encroaching on my space (being a pain in the arse to me) and I do dislike conflict.  I have had encounters with unpleasant drunks before... one fell onto my lap as I sat on a bus, one upturned a table at a wedding I attended, I had to shelter a woman and her children in my house one day, who's drunken husband was threatening them, so people drinking socially, I don't have a problem with, but when their behaviour starts to impact me, I am not so happy.

It's a bit late for me to ask the question really, because my cruise is all paid for, so I'll be going what ever the answers, but being a new cruiser I have a lot of questions in my mind as to what cruising is like and being an introvert, I am a little apprehensive about being on a ship with thousands of others... so I'm trying to get a feel of what to expect ahead of time.

Wow, I bet they were annoyed!  I just watched a video about a person demanding their cruise money back for being served burnt toast? I think having your prepaid drink supply withheld, or being banned from your cabin is more reason to complain!  Of course they asked for it, by being drunk and disorderly:62_dizzy_face:.

Stay away from Northbridge on a Saturday night.

I have been on 14 cruises on different cruise lines. There are always drunk people. Most are happy drunks, talking to loud and just having fun. I enjoy them. One of my favorite things to do is to sit with a drink and people watch. You will run into a few who invade your private space and are a little bit to loving (you know the drunk person who loves and hugs everyone), but still no issues. I only saw security get involved one time. So don't worry.

Once a drunk guy asked my husband if he would consider swapping me for a bottle of Guinness... happy to say my husband isn't big on Guinness ?!  Thanks folks - one more subject I'm feeling better about.   Happy drunks are not a problem.

My daughter and I had a drunk lady ask if my daughter's breasts were real and then touched them to see. Don't worry my daughter is 25, plus her dad was there in case it got any weirder.

In my six cruises, I've only ever been a witness to one incident ..... it was on the pool deck during the belly flop contest on Grandeur ..... those security personnel swooped in like Ninjas and "escorted" those involved out of the area so quickly, unless you were paying attention, you never would've noticed it ....

Very impressive.

Only been on two cruises so far, third one coming up in a couple of months. But no unpleasant incidents at all for me on either, and I was wandering the ship a lot at night on the last one (courtesy of regular after-dinner iced coffee with Bailey's), wandering from the pub to the Schooner Bar to the Music Hall. Just lots of people having a good time and enjoying the trip.

We have seen a few incidents over the years that were taken care of immediately.  All in all you will be fine.  The best story we heard was a few months ago friends of ours were on a cruise and this guy did not show up for muster. They went to his cabin and he was belligerently drunk.  He was escorted off the ship.  Nice cruise HUH.

Must have been the guy in the next cabin to ChessE4 ?!

I think, in addition to the drink packages, one has to also realize that it's easier for people to spread the word about things. 15-20 years ago, if someone got drunk on a ship and cause an issue, few people outside of that ship ever really heard about it. Now, someone can post their experience online and blast it to thousands and thousands of additional people.

It's kind of like network news...are bad things happening more in 2019, or are we just hearing more about what has always been happening? I think the latter.

Years ago, Mother and daughter was on the same cruise with us. Either her daughter finish collage or just turn 21 not sure. The daughter was very drunk on the excursion and her mom have to drag her on board. I also saw the same person drunk on board also but her mom took care of her. She was just a little loud but her mom was there so it all good.

I was a little drunk myself last Anthem cruise but not by intention. I had the iFly scheduled so I hold off on eating and drinking anything before the iFly. My stomach really empty after I was done the iFly, my husband decided the Diamond happy hours will be over soon so we need to get drinks. So I drank before I eat(don't do that). I was not loud just a little too happy (no I did not hug anyone). End up  too much too drink got me and my hubby to the next cruise, we booked another cruise Symphony OTS. Not sure how but somehow we managed to get the correct date. Then we just went back to our room and sleep.

13 cruises and can only recall one incident that wasn't even an incident ... guy was so drunk he was sleeping in the schooner bar. Security was professional, spoke to him, and escorted him to (I assume) his cabin.

As others have said, people might get loud but that's the alcohol, everyone needs to be heard over the next person, or cannot hear themselves. LOL!

As a comparison, 5 minutes into a land trip to London where some soccer event just ended there was a fight in the street between the people in front of us, who were causing trouble ...  we quickly turned around to not be in their radius.

My wife would have been in trouble, I love me a Guinness! ?

About to take our 10th cruise with RCCL, we had one minor incident when we sailed around the Christmas holidays, there was a group of people in the hot tub that was VERY loud and saying a lot of inappropriate things for the crowd that was full of children.  They had Polar Express playing and the group was  highly intoxicated,  you could not even hear the movie that we were watching out by the pool over the noise they were making.  Someone complained and a manager went over and talked to them and they disappeared, problem solved! That is the ONLY time that we have had anything related to alcohol happen.

I have never witnessed any issues on any of the cruises I have been on, and I frequent all the various establishments in the evenings until late.  I think most people on cruises are genuinely happy people and in good moods.   I can't imagine the staff would tolerate a belligerent drunk person very long anyways.

Likewise, other than a few loud or annoying people.... have not seen any major incidents over 6 cruises.

The good thing is if you are around some annoying drunks... the ships are big enough with enough things going on... you can usually find another place to go hang out with more of the fun drunks. :-)

Having been on the same cruise as you...I can attest there were a few "loud" moments...but definitely nothing that was outlandish or physical.  Except for that one nameless woman who wouldn't leave Paul alone, and CLR had some words with her at the Quest.  Put the group of us together and you'll hear a lot of "RockyTop" etc. which I guess could be annoying to others around who are trying to enjoy the music.  ? But it's all in fun!

We’ve been on 20 cruises in total. The first 6 were on another cruise line. We stopped cruising with that line partly because there were to many intoxicated people and we like to drink! Along with being loud there would be lots of bad language, inappropriate drunk behavior and we saw a number of fights.

One time in particular about 15 years ago  on a cruise, sitting at a bar in evening talking with a really nice older couple probably in mid 70’s. The woman shook a little and had previously had a stroke. Some drunk guy came up he over heard her saying to me that in her day she had been a looker, she was still quite lovely. He immediately started hurling insults at her calling her an old hag! I was shocked at such appalling behavior. It was really upsetting.

In our 13 cruises with Royal Caribbean we have seen people who probably shouldn’t have had so much to drink. Never have we seen any offensive behavior, fights or anything we’d deem inappropriate.

I’ve only been witness to a single alcohol fueled event on a cruise. It was a fist fight between family members during a chef’s table dinner. It was very entertaining & security stopped it after a few punches were thrown and the chef watched in horror. After security hauled off the family there was only 4 people left at the table. In a strange twist, RC bought us all multiple rounds of drinks before we ended the dinner.

Hot tubs and children reminds me of when we stayed at a local resort once. I was in the hot tub and noticed a girl of about ten rearranging her one piece bathing suit and squirming about.. Not liking the look of it, I got out and went to the gym... a little while later my sons came in roaring with laughter, telling me how they were in the hot tub and another young man with them, saw something unusual... picked it up.... looked at it with confused curiosity ?:35_thinking: , then squeezed it between his fingers, before then realising what it was:38_worried:.  I'm sure I don't need to tell you what it was:70_poop:... My sons thought it was hilarious that they had watched and seen the expression of this boy had squashed a lump of poop between his fingers:51_scream::4_joy:!  I was just glad I got out of the hot tub when I did!  Needless to say no one wanted to go in the hot tub after that  ☣️, even though the cleaning staff were advised.... I'd rather deal with obnoxious drunks than a turd in the pool dun dun dun dun dun dun?  aaggghhhh:51_scream:! Shring, Shring, Shring!!!

I’ve never had a problem on a cruise ship other then walking in heels after sharing a martini sampler with my husband ?.  We did run into an interesting situation on a train to Windsor recently though.  Thousands of people packed themselves onto the same train as us to get to a rugby match.  They were all in costumes and I had to stand, hugging my husband because there was no space.  The guys next to us were a friendly bunch though and were trying to finish a shopping bag full of Fosters before their stop.??. We wished them well and were a little jealous.  Looked like fun.

Probably more chance of incidents involving alcohol on land at all inclusive hotels or walking down any main street in any city on a Saturday night.

Every passenger on a cruiseship is there to enjoy themselves so chances of incident are a lot less than on land where people will argue with anyone about the most trivial things.
