Facial Recognition question

You don't have to do anything.  It just means that they'll park you for about 2 seconds in front of a machine that uses facial recognition when you disembark instead of handing your passport over to customs. It's super quick and you'll be left wondering what you forgot to do when you walked out the door, lol.

SpeedNoodles...good stuff!  So basically we wont need to take our passports off the ship for any of the disembarkments...correct? Just hope we can get back in the door!

While i have your attention...im going with my wife and son...can i just buy my son the classic soda package now for $8.99 per day, or would i have to buy for all three of us?

Thanks again.

The facial recognition thing is only for FINAL disembarkation at Customs.  The ports of call do not use facial recognition.

With the refreshment package and the soda package you can purchase it for one or more people but everyone in the cabin does NOT have to purchase it.  The "everyone must buy" rule only applies to the Ultimate Beverage Package (alcohol).

No, this is only at disembarkation at the end of your cruise, when you go through customs.  When you are in port during the cruise you'll need whatever they suggest in the daily Cruise Compass (at a minimum, your Sea Pass card and often some form of photo ID, like a passport or driver's license).

You can buy the soda package for only one person if you like.  It's only if you are buying the Deluxe Beverage Package that they require all adults in the same room to purchase the package. They don't require it for the soda or refreshment package.

Enjoy your cruise, and welcome to the boards!!!

Ok...got it...so facial recog is only when we come back for final disembarkation

thanks for clarifying the soda package.....my wife and i weren't going to get any drink package (she's a non-drinker), so cant buy the alcohol one without buying 2 which im not doing! So maybe we'll get the refreshment package for $26 per day each person...yikes that adds up fast but seems to have some good options rather than no package at all....i can still buy my 1-2 drinks per day.

If you call Royal directly and tell them that your wife doesn't drink alcohol at all, they may allow you to purchase the DBP still, but she will have to buy the Refreshment Package.  Whether this is a good value or not is really based on how much you'll take advantage of it.

SpeedNoodles...that's good to know but i dont think i'd get my moneys worth if i got the DBP myself...i'm fine with 1-2 alcoholic drinks per day....is it true that if i buy the Refreshment Package that it's cheaper to buy now (5 days out) than later or on the ship? Say i even buy the Refreshment Package for all 3 of us for $26 each (so $78 per day...so 6 days is $546)...is there a one-time gratuity of 18% on top of the $546 so another $98 too?

Yes, you will pay a gratuity on top of the price.  Things are almost always cheaper on the cruise planner than on the ship.

Assuming this is optional and I can elect NOT to have my face scanned?

You can opt to wait in the longer line to have your passport looked at by an actual person if you prefer.  If the scanner can't recognize you for some reason you get sent to that line anyways.

Depending on what you plan on drinking, what we do is use the refreshment package to order a mocktail and the order a shot of what liquor you want.

As an example my wife likes Lava flow's with Kraken, if we have the drink package we just order one, if we have the refreshment package we order a Lava flow and then buy a shot of Kraken, not much less expensive but a little.

Not sure.  I wish they had it at all ports - it's incredibly fast.

I prefer not to have my biometrics held by every corporation that wants it. I opted out of using my finger prints at Disney. At the end of the day, how are they securing that data?

I certainly don't mind if others want to do it. Just not my cup of tea.

If you have a passport, they already have your facial biometrics (if you have global entry they already have your fingerprints)

BTW, this is CBP scanning your face, NOT Royal Caribbean.

You beat me to it. This is a US Government program. Here is some more information https://www.cbp.gov/travel/biometrics

Yes the new technology is starting to be very common, those that freak out about it are soon going to relegate themselves to just not going anywhere.  Myself i have always realized that since i was 17 the government has had my fingerprint based on serving in the military.  Then a little later they started collecting dental scan for the records, now if you have served in the military, at least in the US, they also have your DNA on file.  Have a passport ? government has your facial recondition data.
