The Key

I’m on the Ovation as I post this.  Yesterday at check in, I did not see special access given to any of the Crown and Anchor levels.  It was all for those who purchased The Key.

Port of Seattle is weird, and I wouldn't use that as a way to rate embarkation. Last year on Explorer of the Seas (prior to The Key), they boarded everyone as one giant group regardless of C&A.

I can tell you in all my cruises this year in Bayonne, Canaveral, Miami, they have always respected the C&A levels for boarding.

This has been my experience as well.  Boarding last Sunday in Galveston they were very strict on boarding sequence - almost obsessive. The Key boarded after all Suites categories and Pinnacles.

I agree.  I’ve sailed mostly from Canaveral and Lauderdale.  C&A members have exclusive entry points at those ports.

Agreed - when we got to the Port of Seattle, they checked us in when we walked in we were told to go up the elevator, where we scanned our luggage.  There were people milling around the waiting area, but someone pointed us onto the gangway - we waited nowhere.  We were Gold Status, we didn't have The Key, we weren't in a suite.  We were about as steerage as one could get.  So there was no rhyme or reason in Seattle.

I’m cruising in Jan 2020...is the Key worth it for a Diamond Plus member?

The Key doesn’t really duplicate any D+ perks except for possibly earliest boarding. I think some of the ships still allow D+ to use the reserved seating in the main theater but all the ships (to my knowledge) have kicked D+ out of the reserved seating in the ice skating theater.

I would say if you want lunch on boarding day and Voom you should probably still consider The Key.

Think the key is the greatest scam RCL has come up with. Selling to customer things that actually cost them nothing. Free lunch. The kitchen is cooking anyways. WiFi costs them nothing. Early on yep zilch. Early off you guessed it nothing. Time specified for attractions once again it is a zero. Workers are already there. So if they sell 200 of these on a cruise at 38 bucks it is 7600 a day. 53,200 a week and 212,800 a month. Almost a quarter of a million extra from just one ship a month   Not all ships have need for key but if 15 do that is 3.2 million per month. 38 million a year. All pure profit selling free stuff.

They sell a ton of stuff thats pure profit on the ship......I thought the Key was one of the best purchases we made.  I boarded right after suite guests and pinnacles, sat down to a quite Chops lunch, never had to stand in line for a show or try to find a seat, got to ride the flowrider for an hour while everyone else had to wait, priority at ports of call (again no waiting in line), internet included which we were going to buy anyway and on disembarkation I had a great breakfast and was then escorted off the ship in front of everyone waiting at the gangway straight to immigration and customs.  I didn't have to wait at all during my cruise and for that I would have paid even more!!!  Not to mention the look on my wifes face every time we went straight to the front of the line or to our reserved seats.

The Key is now available for our sailing at the cheap price of $50/day Canadian. ??? At this price we unfortunately arent going to buy it and dont think it's worth it. The total is just over 700 for the two of us.

Yep. I had The Key on Mariner, and I loved it .. purchased it for myself and my friends for Navigator in Dec (both at $19.99/day),  but no way is it worth it over $24.99 (and that's pushing it for what I think I'd pay).

That was the price I was hoping to see. I think they're trying to recoup some of their losses from the drink package catastrophe. It's disappointing because I was looking for it. I'd be surprised if they sold out of The Key at that price point.

Was just on Anthem Sept.12.  Embark key line had over 50 people waiting to get on while we walked up to an empty counter and checked in in 1 minute.  Disembark we did walk off while watching a long line of Key guests trying to leave.  Had priority seating for the shows  and got all the specialty dinners and times we wanted.  Best money we ever saved.
