Liberty with grandkids

Recommended Posts

I will make occasional comments when I have something interesting to add.

First- check in was a snap. They did ask for and copy the notarized letters from parents giving us permission to be responsible for them.

CABIN 9200 is perfect!  LOTS of room and the nook for the bunkbeds is a hit with the teens. They decided to split up the time half and half so each one can have the privacy.

Slight disappointment in that they (both 16 years old )were not allowed in Diamond club last night. Concierge said maybe tonight if it’s not crowded.

Also not allowed on bridge tour but can go on galley tour and theater tour.

Finally no priority seating for ice show. Guess we’ll be standing in line hoping to get in. Last time we got tickets but now it’s first come first serve.

Day 2- sea day

The ship seems really really crowded. I couldn’t understand everything in the captains announcement today but I think he said there are 1000 more passengers on board than last week.

We spent most of the day hanging out by the pool.

As a follow up, the teens were welcomed into the D Club. Maybe it was just a space issue Sunday.

That's awesome they accommodated them.

Usually the Diamond letter left in a cabin is pretty clear - friends and family who are not Diamond are not allowed.

The letter did say that but we have seen plenty of “children “ in there before. We are their guardians for this cruise and they are in our cabin. They weren’t there to eat and drink they just sat by us. We didn’t barge in with them, we asked permission. Our grandson spent many hours in the D club in Alaska. No problem. That’s why I was surprised. There was plenty of room not crowded at all.

We certainly appreciate his accommodation.

If the parents are Diamond or higher so are their kids.  Royal passes the parents status unto kids < 18 years old.

Kids are allowed in the club, but by the letter of policy they must be Diamond.

At any rate, glad they were able to accomodate them.

Day 3 in Cozumel- very HOT! Drink a lot of water!

We did the Atlantis Submarine tour. Saw lots of cool fish and sting rays. The vessel is cramped and I don’t recommend it if you have mobility issues ( you have to use a small ladder to get into the viewing area)or claustrophobia.

Day4- Grand Cayman  A beautiful island

Dolphin Encounter and Sting Ray city

If you want to swim with dolphins book the Dolphin Swim  The Encounter you don’t leave the side of the enclosure.  More about this later

Sting Ray city our boat was a rusty bucket; too crowded at the location and not many sting rays. I have done this several times before and this time was not that good.

Ice show was great as usual

Two general comments. Why  do they have to play LOUD disco music in the Promenade early in the morning when early risers are trying to get coffee? There’s no other place to get coffee before windjammer opens and it is annoying

Don’t try to go to the Schooner Bar in the evening or sea days when the casino is open  The smoke smell is toxic there.

Also I relented and bought Wifi and vooom for grandkids. It doesn’t work often. You can’t login🤬Don’t expect great service.

Also theres no freestyle machine on this ship. The bartenders tend to be busy mixing drinks and they ignore the shy kids waiting patiently for a refill  I observed that myself.

Day 5- Falmouth Jamaica

I was pleasantly surprised at this port. The gated shopping restaurant area is very nice and safe. A nice change from the haranguing you experience at the Cozumel port shopping area. And it was very organized to meet your excursion.

We took the Dreamer catamaran and snorkeling tour-  I believe we paid about $70 per person and it was well worth it. The catamaran is very nice, comfortable and provides some  shade. The bus ride was comfortable. The crew was great very nice, enthusiastic, and entertaining as they danced to the Carribbean music. The snorkeling sight evidently was great too. Our grandkids really enjoyed the day.

We made it back in time to eat lunch and recuperate from 6 hours in the heat.

We decided to skip the In the Air show

A fun day was has by all.

Also 2nd formal night and lobsters in dining room. Every table got a birthday cake to celebrate RCCL 50th birthday. Grandkids had to rummage around to find clothes that weren’t dirty or wrinkled  🤣🤣🤣

We booked our next cruise at  Nextcruise. Transatlantic on Anthem April 2020 Cape Liberty to Southhampton then we will stay over a few days in London.

All pools were too crowded so we found a quiet spot on Deck 4 to read and play shuffleboard. 39222126-CDF3-4D03-9FD7-B1A5ACD657C7.thumb.jpeg.e73e4dc43e06a653bb21e58e8d9cfdc3.jpegKids finally got to sleep late.

Good news is someone finally turned down the music on Deck 5 at 6:00am😀

Unfortunately all 4 of us have had problems with the ship WIFI. We are constantly being knocked off and can’t get back on☹️

Final thoughts-maybe

The Wifi really does need some improvement. I realize being in the Gulf and relying on the satellite is iffy but this was ridiculous. You're on then you're off. Then you can't get back on.

Also the Royal app is equally funky onboard. It kept telling me I had to have wifi to use it and of course, you don't need to. And it was not necessarily accurate. We used it mainly to check the menus. I say it's nice but the good old Compass is the more reliable.

Saturday Night Live show really needs to be changed. It is getting old even for this old gal. I've seen it many time in many venues. Let's get a new show! The Two Funny Guys were-  two funny guys! Even the teenagers thought they were funny.

The food in MTD and our waiter and assistant waiter were outstanding! I saw very few passengers dressed formally for formal night-the majority wore what is sometimes called business casual or country club casual. The men especially have given up the coats and ties. First and last night were very casual with shorts everywhere . Two nights the people before us took long to eat or came late and we had to change tables and wait.

Our cabin 9200 was huge and with curtains drawn actually gave us 3 private sleeping areas. Cherton was our cabin steward and he was a dream. The kids were amazed at how the beds were magically made up twice a day and if you left something on the bed it was right there after he made it "to the centimeter." We got our exercise walking to the very front of the ship.

If you are looking for a quiet place to read or nap, go to Deck 4 Starboard near the shuffleboards. It is shady, breezy and quiet. Port side had a lot of smokers.

The Diamond club was not too crowded and in spite of the "rules" our grandkids and at least one other grandparent- grandkid family group were allowed in.  I was surprised to see obviously underage children being served alcohol and one young girl left the club with a 12 ounce glass filled with Irish Creme. Not cool!

Debarkation in Galveston was quick and efficient. We were out the door and at our car by 9:30.

Honestly it was one of the smoothest, most enjoyable cruises we have taken on a long time.
