MDR Menu

Both of these ships are available on the Royal App. If you download it and search for an itinerary for the ship you want, then you can view the current menus for all restaurants for any upcoming sailings. As well as everything else that would be listed in cruise compasses. Thanks

Which app? I’ve got the “brochure” app which doesn’t have the info anywhere I could find. And the other Royal app that has my reservations does not have anything for my sailings.

It's in the main royal app that has your reservation. Even if your sailing is too far out for info to be available on it, you can see menus and schedules for other sailings. On the main screen where it says "Select your sailing" and has your cruises listed, scroll below that and underneath "link a missing reservation" there is the option for "get more details on ships we support". Tap on that and then select your ship and either a current sailing or one that is about to happen. Once the sailing loads, select the little cruise ship icon at the top (other icons will be a calendar and a person) and then select the second icon which is a knife and fork for dining. The second tab is "Main dining" and you should be able to see the menu which is between "find on deck" and the greyed out "reserve now" bar.

I hope that helps! I made a screen recording of it, but the Royal app is weird and doesn't highlight the things that you select before loading them so it's not super helpful.

The new app called Royal. If your sailing is still a ways off then it won’t show up in your actual sailing. But you can go in the app and select the ship and then select an upcoming sail to view this info. Thanks

Thanks for posting the MDR menu's.

Is the MTD (My Time Dining) menu the same as the MDR's menu?

TIA

You are very welcome!

Yes, as far as I know they are identical menus... My Time and Traditional dining are both in the MDR, just seated on different levels (MDR usually has three floors). On our cruise last week on Allure, we were assigned Deck 3 (a.k.a. American Icon Grill) for My Time dining.

For a 4 night cruise, do they use the first 4 nights menu's of a 7 day cruise? Thanks if anyone knows!

Usually a ship doing a 4 night cruise is alternating between 3 and 4 night cruises so they would still use all 7 menus over the course of a week.  I would bet some ships serve MDR menu 1 on day 1 of the 3-day cruise and others do it on day 1 of the 4-day cruise.  Not sure there's a way to know in advance.

When I did a galley tour on Navigator a couple months ago (right after refresh) they explained how the menu was created.  It varies by ship and sometimes even sail date.

The food and beverage manager sits down with the head chef and they plan the menu.  They have a budget, such as $100,000 for a 9 night sailing.  Historically they know how much lobster will be consumed on the 2nd formal night so that consumes so much of the budget.  So many nights will have a steak entree so that consumes more of the budget.  Historically they know for each and every entree -  chicken, lamb, beef, etc. how much will be consumed so each offering is calculated how much of the budget is consumed.

As the cruise progresses they track their estimates versus actual budget dollars consumed for that sailing.  If near the end there is surplus budget they may alter a menu and add something they know will be popular and consume more of the surplus budget.  They might even place lobster and other seafood in the Windjammer on the final night if the budget allows it.

It's all tracked against the budget so they are constantly fine tuning the menu to stay within the budget as seasonal and regional or cultural differences trends change over time.

Consequently they don't publish the menu in advance and the menu in the app doesn't always match what is actually offered on any given night of the cruise.

Great insight!!!

On top of this... they also track how much stock is left in their store rooms per cruise.   Depending on the length of the sailing and the ports they visit will determine their ability to restock.

On a cruise I did in the past (not with RCI) the kitchen chef said that on certain pacific island cruises, they ports they visit are NOT suitable for restocking mid cruise.  So they have to plan around a 12 - 14 day itinerary and have ALL stock available on board. If they want to use fresh ingredients, these are usually served at the beginning of the cruise.  Items that they have frozen will be back loaded.  The logistics of stocking cruise kitchens are just phenomenal.

Royal ships often don't restock mid-cruise, they've built their cold storage to keep enough for most voyages.

During hurricane season in the Caribbean they maintain over two weeks of cold storage food on the ship.  Fresh fruit and perishables don't last over two weeks so those turn over on a different timeframe.

If a hurricane forces a diversion they can sail for over two weeks and not run out of food although fresh fruit may be replaced with canned varieties.  This occurs on transatlantics and transpacific crossings sometimes.  Try ordering a Mojito on day 13 and you may be told no fresh mint available.

I was sailing in the Caribbean out of Florida when a sister ship pulled up beside us in St Maarten arriving on a crossing from Europe.  The ship's traded supplies.  Our ship took several boxes of paper in exchange for some of our fresh fruit so guests on that ship could once again enjoy fresh fruit and mint in the Mojitos before their arrival two days later in Miami.

It should be. As far as I know, most if not all ships run the same MDR menu. The days might be in a different order though.
