I plan to Periscope on Oasis 2/20/16 and some in FLL a couple of days prior to that, if possible.

I am trying to get a handle on using Periscope as I am new at it.  I put my phone into airplane mode and turn on the Wifi and it will work fine....right?

I am scouv@travelgici

Sandy

PS - thanks to all of you who have been recently scoping -- I have loved watching all of the videos and learning how to do it!

What is Periscoping and what is VOOM?

Periscope is a app for live broadcasting. When Matt is broadcasting for example, we can type and ask him questions live. We can see him but he can't see us, other than our typed questions.

Voom is high speed internet some royal ships have, very fast, faster than home. It's done by satalite shooting beam directly at ship.

Just to explain ferther, other than Voom cruise ship Internet is natoriously bad, if you want to periscope at sea you nead a ship with Voom.

Periscope is really fun to play with, I don't broadcast but like watching videos. You get a image of a world map filled with red dots, each dot is someone broadcasting live. Could be a concert going on now or just someone watching a baseball game, mainly its just someone wanting to chat.

Of course we like to watch people showing off cruise ships so we try to share them when we find them.

YIKES I thought this sounded like fun and was going to download until I read the reviews where people are complaining of "Trolls", "Stalkers", and Porn. Many said they've closed their accounts until a better accountability is enacted. Guess I don't want to get involved.

I only watch those I follow, so I've never experienced these issue. Plus, when I've scoped, I've done what other responsible broadcasters do and block anyone who trolls the conversation.

I don't use Periscope like YouTube, so this isn't a problem for me.

I noticed sometimes Periscopes will show up on the map in port everglades even though the ship maybe off someplace else.

You are correct.  The nature of internet addressing varies and these signals are not really geo-targeted like one would expect.

Right. Periscope is going to ask the phone to tell it where it's located. The phone will attempt to use two sources to figure out where it is: GPS and WiFi positioning.

In the case of GPS, once you put your phone into airplane mode, the GPS receiver is disabled. For WiFi positioning, it only works for WiFi access points that aren't moving around. :)

So, the phone basically reports the last known position which was the port when the Periscoper boarded the ship.

If the phone user doesn't have airplane mode enabled and is up on the top deck long enough to receive a GPS signal, then you'd see the actual position of the ship out in the ocean.

The other fun factor here is how Google and other APIs determine location via WiFi.  Google Street View cars drive around, they see where various networks are as they drive by.  Where is a Google vehicle likely to 'see' a ship's network?  In port.  Now, Google thinks that any devices on that ships network are in the port.  There are multiple network appliances you may connect to on a ship, so in theory, when you're forward on a high deck you might appear to be in Port Everglades, but when you're midship by the lobby, you appear to be in NJ (for example).

Just a reminder in this thread that the RoyalCaribbeanBlog.com group cruise is coming up in just a few days!

I'm sure several of us will be Periscoping throughout the week (from Saturday's group meet on through the 7 night sailing leaving this Sunday).  Be sure to follow my account (@monorailmedic) and if you aren't already, Matt's/RCLBlog's account (@theRCLBlog) on both Twitter and Periscope.  I'll be sure to share any others sharing our trip live.

FYI, your profile shows you as @MouseAndManPod on Periscope and I only realized it was you by adding you through Twitter. Is this the account you'll scope from?

I scope from @monorailmedic - where are you seeing reference to MouseAndManPod (aside from my Twitter summary/narrative)?

When I search your your Twitter handle on Periscope, your name real name comes up, with the above in the summary, as does monorailmedia as the two choices.

Gotcha.  Yeah, thats from my twitter bio (Periscope is owned by Twitter so it just pulls from there).  I'll update that to make it less confusing as that show has been long gone.  Thanks.

I figured it was you, but I had just enough doubt to ask. ;)

I went to Twitter which is how I associated your name with your handle, but it was the bio that was throwing me off.

Just learning this technology, made the RCblog and medic the first two scopers to follow - ever. To travel virtually with your group on AOS cruise this past week

A great time waster and dream maker. The bird chirp alarm is a hoot. I'm late to twitter also. Real time reviews and Q&A's.  RC  should definitely throw a bone your way,

this is what they call "earned media" and RC gets it for free. I assume corporate scopes are just around the corner.

The cruise line actually does scope. They just recently had a campaign feature the ports and the excursions.

I plan to Scope during our April 24th Liberty cruise. Unfortunately they will not have VOOM installed by that time and I will only be able to broadcast when we have cellular or wi-fi access.

I will double check but I think my account name is Wilson_cruise_addict

I will be on the Liberty at the end of May myself. I have been watching someone who is on the LIBERTY right now and says that the one major slide has yet to open. First they were told it would be a couple months till it's open then were told that this Sunday (tomorrow) it may open!! Hope it is by the end of May!!!
