Allure Propulsion Issues

Recommended Posts

Didn't Allure have a problem with one of her azipods just last year? I remember @KLA seeing the same problem with visibly different wake where the affected azipod was, and she went in for that dry dock that @twangster posted from YouTube as an example of how the Bahamian dry dock gets adapted to hold Oasis class size ships, along with the use of coffer dams to simply the work on the azipods.

If that ship is having trouble yet again and only a year later, I'd can only assume one of the other two azipods is now having trouble. Not a good sign.

Allure dinged a propellor late in 2017.  Ran over a submerged shipping container or hit something.  They tried to cut off the damage but that led to an imbalance.  A prop that isn't balanced will cause vibrations.  At higher speeds those vibrations can become excessive and lead to bearing wear and other issues.

It took several months to manufacturer a new prop and they swapped it in January of 2018.  In the interim they cut St. Kitts since to reach all the way down there required a high speed leg that Allure couldn't manage due to the vibrations.

Hopefully slowing it down solves the issue. There’s not an easy place where they can send it for a quick repair in the Bahamas right now.

If the itinerary has been altered wouldn't RC need time to repair the issue? Would RC keep doing this until it's schedule dry dock whenever that is?

“Propulsion Issue” is a vague statement.   That could be something fixed by divers in the water or it may require dry dock facilities.

If another dinged propellor simply avoiding top speed (which consumes more fuel anyways) is a viable solution.

After the Oasis crane incident they likely learned some things as they worked through that crisis. They can use that knowledge as they look at options here.

Time will tell.

Yes - it was around Sept/Oct 17 the azipod issue started, and it went in to dry dock in January 18 to fix the issue. We have her booked again this year in October and we're very much looking forward to it with how busy our schedules are lately, so reeeally hoping there's no impact.

Also, hi everyone!

Actually, it was August 2017 and it went in to dry dock in January 2018. It's probably an issue with the bearings in an azipod.

It's a mechanical device, just like a car, truck or airplane. They will breakdown from time to time.

So can Royal go back to STX Europe Turku Shipyard and make a Lemon Law claim? ?

Was your itinerary affected?

I was on that same cruise (April 7 end) and noticed random vibrations.  Our itinerary wasn't changed, but we were sailing to different locations than the one that's currently being affected.  Our itinerary was Miami, Nassau, sea, Cozumel, Roatan, Costa Maya, sea, back to Miami.

Nope our itinerary was not effected.  We just noticed the vibration while at the diving show and eating at Johnny Rockets.  We have been on lots of Oasis class ships to know something was not right and asked but were told everything was normal.
