Dress code for formal dining

It is not necessary. A suit is equally acceptable. In addition, you'll find that the formality of formal night has declined dramatically over the years. I, for one, simply wear a tie, whereas others might wear a sports coat over a nice shirt without a tie.

 

If you opt to dine in the specialty restaurants on formal night, they have a separate dress code of smart casual, which is why some dine there on formal night so that they don't have to dress up.

This is pretty common among the pricier ultra premium lines. Surprised it hasn't happened sooner.

 

The only line I've sailed on that required a coat on formal night was Holland America; all of the other lines have greatly eased their dress codes.
