Oasis Crane Crash

Wonder If They Will Cancel Some More Sailings. Should Take Them Some More Time To Fix Those Rooms

Hard to determine damage from this angle.  First priority is accounting for everyone and imminent danger such as a damaged fuel tank or other structural issue.  Within 24 hours they'll know near term impact.

Initial thoughts based on limited information:

The ship was in position in the dry dock.  They were in the process of lifting the ship.  The dry dock broke unable to lift the ship.  When the dry dock broke, the one side collapsed and buckled causing the top of the dry dock where the crane is located to heave or buckle leading to the crane collapsing onto the ship.

If that is the case, you can see how any workers on top of the dry dock would have been tossed around as the surface of the dry dock structure buckled.

In this photo you can see the sidewall of the dry dock tilted inward.

Wow.  Really hope they can find everyone.

That makes two of us! I'm questioning that the dry dock wasn't able to hold the ship; I can't imagine that Royal would have engaged in a contract with them for this repair without knowing the range of tonnage it was capable of holding safely. No way Royal would risk one of their crown jewels if they didn't have 100% certainty the ship and the crew working on it would be safe. Sounds like they were doing something out of the ordinary with this dry docking, hoisting the ship up rather than pulling it in and then draining the water out so the ship would settle on the supports?

I know that they have had the O class ships in dry dock in the Bahamas before but it's true that these ships will not fit into the dry docks in the Bahamas.  I recall that they actually have to lift one end of the ship in order to get to the areas that have to be repaired (which is apparently the point at which the crane failed, this time).  It was definitely a make-shift maneuver that was borne out of the fact that the O class ships cannot be repaired just anywhere.

I just hope everyone is ok.

It appears the crane may simply be leaning against the ship, aft of the ATS cabins.

Primary concern would be for dockyard workers, accounting for them since the natural tendency is to run away, far away with large cranes potentially now unstable.

Allure did a similar partial dry dock last year.  Unclear if that was the same dock #2.

Too early to determine root cause.  Sounds like dry dock simply broke apart but that's speculation.

An insurance company would have signed off on this project.

So many possibilities right now.  The ship would have backed into coffer dams to do the bearing work.  If the floor of the dry dock broke, those coffer dams could have shifted and damaged the propellors or the azipods themselves.

There would have been divers in the water guiding the ship, monitoring the lift, working on the coffer dams, closing the doors, moving them into position.  First priority is to account for them.

This video from Allure illustrates the work involved:

Photo isn't great but you can see half of the railing on the FlowRider deck is missing. Not clear if it is damaged or removed as part of the work. If that area is damaged that must have been some hit, maybe the line snapped? (Edit: maybe the back part of the crane? Hard to tell with these shots).  It doesn't look like the crane itself hit that area.

I also see damage on the Aqua theater and maybe one of the lower AT balcony rooms.

After watching the video of the procedure they used on Allure, the crane could be the least of their problems.  There could be tremendous damage to the azipods and where they mount to the hull if the ships weight came down on them.  This could potentially be a very long repair.

for real?

Grand Bahamas Shipyard went for a record 29 cruise ship dry docks in 2018 up from 23 in 2017.  those are just cruise ship dry docks.  Some of those are minor like Grandeur's recent dry dock that was mostly technical work under the water line.  Navigator just finished her dry dock there a month ago.

If dry dock 2 has been destroyed or even seriously damaged, that won't be fixed very quickly.  A lot of ships, cruise, cargo, tankers, etc could be impacted by this.  Losing a major dry dock facility where a lot of ships get work done will have a ripple effects for many months to come.  This also mean a lot workers will be out of work.

It also means they'll not likely attempt such a partial Oasis class dry dock again.  That has implications that are hard to quantify.

Priority remains accounting for all workers at this point.

Is this where the Oasis AMP is scheduled later this year?  Could impact the timing of that?

It's a tight fit in those coffer dams.  If they are at the point of performing the lift, the coffer dams were closed and tightly surrounding the azipods.  If the dry dock collapsed or broke apart, it's hard to imagine the azipods not being damaged.

When Allure dinged a prop, it took months to forge a new one.  She limped along at a reduced speed for a while.

Going to be a lot of damage topside as well.  The Aqua theatre will be out of commission for some time.

Yikes. This looks horrible... I am so glad no one seems to have been killed during this accident! Do you all imagine they will cancel upcoming trips? Hard to imagine how this ship could be sailing anytime in the next several months.
