TinaLouise
Or can we just wander off and do our own thing? I'm fairly fluent in Spanish so I don't worry about having any issues there. Also, will I need to exchange money in Cozumel or is American currency accepted?
melski94
No you don't have to go on the cruise sponsored excursions. Many of us take 3rd party excursions or wander around on our own. The Caribbean ports, except Cuba, will accept US dollars.
KathyC
You are free to choose your own path at each port. But keep in mind if you do a third-party excursion, you MUST be back on time. The ship will NOT wait for you. So if your bus breaks down and you're late...you'll be making your own way to meet up with the ship in the next port. If you take a ship excursion, they will wait if something happens. For us, if where we want to visit is more than a 30 minute taxi ride...we do the ship excursion, no matter what the price difference. It's worth it to us to pay a bit more for the security of knowing they ship will wait. And buses DO break down. Folks on the Blog Navigator group cruise found that out... mellibee
melmar02
Since you mentioned Cozumel, you'll want to plan on taxi money if you are going to be exploring outside of the immediate port/shopping area. It's about a 30 minute walk to the down town area from the pier, and if you are going in the summer, it can get hot fast. Taxis are plentiful going both ways and it's easy to flag one down - even if you start the walk and decide to give up about half way to town as DH and I did while carrying all of our scuba gear a few years ago. It seemed like a good idea when we got off the ship!
JennyB
If I remember correctly, the taxi from the pier area to "downtown" area was $4/person each way.
