167 guests sick on Oasis of the Seas

This just sucks on every level. Great that people are getting their money back but damnnnnnn. I got it at work a few years ago and I'm still weird about sharing food. I'm in a constant cycle of washing my hands then putting lotion on because my hands get dry. I won't touch doorknobs or the sink without a paper towel or my sleeve. I have a flight tomorrow and I bought special antibacterial wipes for my seat and the seat next to me.

I don't mind the Windjammer but have a hard time using the same serving spoons, it freaks me out. I was never this bad until I had noro.

277 passengers sickened with viral illness! How many times has everybody seen people walking right past the hand sanitizing stations to line up for buffet? RC should have staff person stationed at buffets and require people to sanitize their hands! This is so preventable!

Not that it's really an excuse, but the hand sanitizer on board doesn't actually kill norovirus - unless you have an antibacterial that's at a grade that can actually kill noro, you REALLY need to wash your hands. I'm a big fan of the hand washing stations they're starting to put outside of the Windjammer.

Again, not really an excuse. But.

It makes me wonder if they determined it was a crew member that started it.  Or Cozumel told them they would be quarantined.

I think the decision to end the cruise early has to do with public relations aspect more than any logistical issue.

It has always surprised me that more people don't get sick from the casino.  Can you imagine any BETTER place to spread a communicable disease than at a card table where everyone is touching cards that have been passed around....and around....and around ?

I wonder if they closed the casino on Oasis at some point ?

Hey @Matt, kinda ironic this happened the week you did a podcast on why people don't cruise, with one of the reasons being "I'll get norovirus"

Doesn't change my perspective about cruising, but I chuckled a little bit at the irony.

Literally the next day I believe  - I listened to the podcast Wed night, and then Thursday....BAM!!  I chucked a bit.

I'm looking at this as a good sign that my cruise coming up in a couple months won't have noro.  Like the Oasis cruise hit the statistical landmine and now the rest of us will be spared for awhile.  Thank you Oasis travelers for taking one for the team!!!  And I hope you feel better soon. ?

As bad as it probably was, they received a free cruise out of the deal, for those that were not ill I wonder if they consider that a fair trade off?

As @SpeedNoodles said earlier, it is not always easy for some professions to be able to schedule time off from their job.

I agree though, this should bode well for the rest of us, I'm on Allure this Sunday, so I'm hoping (And washing my hands often) it doesn't strike twice.

Well, those who didn’t get sick still lost two of their port days, and that could be a big deal for folks who don’t fall under the “My ship is my destination” umbrella. So to get their full cruise fare reimbursed seems very fair and even generous to me, when you consider that their time off just got messed up in a potentially (for them) severe way.

Can they get back the time off that was lost? Nope. But they’ve now been given a chance to make another vacation plan, whether on Royal or not, since they’ll have the funds to pay for it. Whether they have the time available is another matter, but this certainly feels like the company did the right thing all around.

I've been kind of silent on this one for a few days...What I have been wondering through all of this is if this will set the precedence for future cruises where Noro breaks out?  This happens from time to time but, this is the first time I recall where they are returning early and issuing a full refund.  What happens the next time and the time after that?  It's going to end up costing Royal and we all know how that all ends....

I haven't been quiet, but this one is odd to me, 6000+ passengers (Assuming full), 2500 crew, 227 sick (Quoted as 3%), there have been far worse scenarios that Royal and ship passengers have been in, the year of all of the hurricanes come to mind, but on this cruise they refund the passengers everything and I mean everything, my wife showed me a copy of the letter to the passengers posted on the C&A Facebook page, it was very detailed as to what they would get refunded.

I'm happy for them, it just seems like over compensation on Royals part, IMHO.

^^^Odd is a good word to describe the whole situation.  And that's why it makes me wonder what happens next time...

I thought the same thing until I saw that they average less than 1 incident per year, and it only affects 1 ship at a time, unlike a storm which may affect multiple cruises. So I don't think it will affect fares.

I totally agree, but it's funny how companies will end up making an issue over something like the points.

I could totally see them saying take the previous cruise points or the new ones... Not double.  Will be interesting to see...    Jane

Cruise Radio covered this in today’s (Jan13) podcast. Had a guest who was on board recount the whole thing. Guy was in the medical profession and had nothing but positives to say about how they were treated and how the crew handled everything. Said they were clearly well-prepared and well-drilled on the procedures to follow. Very level-headed discussion and no baiting or trying to steer the conversation in a way that would sensationalize it all.

Definitely give it a listen if you’d like to hear a first-hand perspective.

What I was wondering is whether or not every single passenger got a COMPLETE refund - including things like drink packages, dining packages, internet.  WOW.  If that's the case, this sailing was a REAL disaster for everyone !

Ok... That whole aspect hadn't even dawned on me.  I was only thinking about the cruise fare.  Ugh... You are right.... That is a huge amount more.  Jane

No, those things were only pro-rated for 1 day because they got back early.

Definitely have a listen. Way better than the media blowing things out of proportion.  @CruisingKat(Kathy) shared this in the periscopers group.

I wonder if they are still giving them their C&A points.

I was on the Grandeur cruise last year that started two days late because of the rudder issue that kept in in Canaveral for repairs and still got the full amount of C&A points for the cruise I booked. (I received 9 points for the cruise that was shortened to 7 nights.) So, I'm sure the passengers will the points they booked for as well.
