Bar Crawl & Scavenger Hunt

We have a large family cruising on the July 13, 2019 Symphony OTS sailing and I want to organize a bar crawl for one afternoon at sea and a week-long scavenger hunt of photos taken around the ship.  Has anyone participated in either of these kinds of activities in the past?  If so, any pointers or suggestions on how to organize or make the activity bigger or better?

For the Bar Crawl - we'll have a checklist of about ten or so bars on the ship, travel together from bar to bar and enjoy a beverage, then on to the next.  I'll try to organize by deck but I know from past cruises some bars may not be open, etc., during the time of our activity.

For the Scavenger Hunt - I'll make a list of 30-40 locations, items, or people on the ship and assign a point value to each (easy stuff 1 point, hard stuff 5 or 10 points, etc.,).  Hunters will need to take a photo with each and at the end of the week we gather together and see who has the most points.  I've done this on the Navigator OTS  in the past (organized by the cruise) and it was a blast, but a little chaotic since we only had an hour to work out list.  I figure giving the group the whole week, but making it a little more challenging would be a fun activity.

Any thoughts or pointers from experience are welcome.

If you are on the same sailing and want to play along, let me know!  Happy to have you join us.

Thanks

@monorailmedic and @Matt seemed to be in charge of the last bar crawl I participated in and it was on Symphony.  Perhaps they can give you some pointers.  They had neat custom stickers (design help from @CGTLH) for everyone to wear which I thought was a fun idea.  The tour also ended at Playmakers after visiting the Wipeout Bar and taking the Abyss slide down to the Boardwalk.  That was quite fun.

Here is the crawl schedule from Symphony.  To be honest next time I'll remove the pool/mast bar as everyone skips it.

The hard part is keeping people going.  I set a timer and get people moving ahead of schedule and share with the stragglers where we'll be next.  You may want to try adn give the bar managers a heads up if you can.  Sometimes they're helpful with this - sometimes they're not.

Also, big thanks to @BrianAlt (pretty sure I've got the right username for him) for helping me make this more organized a couple years ago by sharing his schedule.

I hosted a pub crawl on the Serenade of the Seas last year. The bar selection is different but the idea can be applied to yours. Our group consisted of 4 couples (8 people) and we had a blast! We caught the attention of many onlookers with our crawl. And the bartenders joined in the fun by dealing out the cards.

To keep people on pace, we turned the crawl into a poker run (7 card stud). And my wife and I flipped for a prize which ended up being $25 poker chip from the casino. That's just what we wanted to do, feel free to collect some cash from each person.

  • Make a loose plan of which bars you want to go to (we ended up adjusting a few on the way based on peoples feedback). Below is our plan from the Serenade
  • Start at the top of the ship (it's easier going downstairs drunk than it is going up)
  • Someone holds the deck of cards (no peeking)
  • Someone deals out the cards (recommend getting a bartender to help, they love it)
  • One card is handed out to each player at each new bar
  • Everyone needs to finish their drink before you move on to the next bar (or make it a roadie)
  • Best hand wins at the seventh bar!

  Hope this helps and cheers!

Funny, I had started creating a scavenger hunt for our group that is sailing later this year.  We have a bunch of kids, and I thought it would be great for the first day when they were exploring the ship to do in families.  Here is what I started.

Symphony of the seas

Scavenger Hunt

  • Take a picture with a crew member.

  • Find the three interactive works of art.

    • Daniel Canogar's all embracing Sound Shell

    • Alejandro Marote's out-of-the-ordinary, meteorite-inspired sound chamber.

    • dEmo's memorable Drier-Wig sculpture

  • Video someone playing the Piano Stairs.

  • Take a picture of someone under the Solarium Big Wonder (Art installation)

  • Video someone doing the zipline

  • Video someone going down the Ultimate Abyss

  • Find the Crystal Hallway inspired by a real-life cave in Mexico.

  • Find the 4 deep divers throughout the ship

  • Take a picture with the Ice Cream machines.

  • Take a picture of the Beetle Sphere

  • Take a picture of your favorite plant in central park.

  • Use the X-ray vision app on the Royal Caribbean app to virtual view around the bridge of symphony of the seas.

  • What are the Windjammers Hours?

On Symphony in two weeks. Yeah, I’m stealing this. Great idea.

That looks awesome!  If we were traveling with a group this time I would totally set something like that up.  This time it's only the hubby and I but we plan to have a drink in every bar on the ship at least once.  Our last cruise although a lot of fun with a large group, we tended to end up in the same spots night after night.  This time we want to really enjoy the ship.  Thanks for posting.
