  1. Found a really useful site to get historical average weather conditions for a given month -- weatherspark.com. It covers every single place I'll be visiting on my Iceland & Greenland cruise, including the Prinz Christian Sund waterway that we'll be traveling through when we leave Qaqortoq. You can view the average data for an entire month, and it gives a ton of useful information -- high-low temperature range, hours of daylight (useful in the far north!), average rainfall chance and total over the month, average wind speed and direction (hugely useful in a place like Prinz Christian Sund, where we're standing on deck much of the day observing the scenery and need to dress warmly enough), average water temp (I remember @twangster's comment about how, absent any major land nearby, ambient air temp is driven by the water temp), and more. This just made planning our wardrobe and what layers to pack a lot easier! Figured I'd share since I know there are others here who've been trying to figure out what to pack for a cruise that changes climates, and visits variable climates, kind of quickly over a few days.
  2. OK, I've never really seen the point of packing cubes before now. But with a 3-week long trip coming up next year (two weeks cruising and just shy of a week in Ireland after that), I'm thinking that it might be time to take the plunge. If nothing else, having some of those things means we have a place to jam dirty laundry to keep it separate, instead of just throwing it pell-mell into one designated "dirty stuff" suitcase at the end of the trip. I found a good explanation of the different types, recommended brands for each type, and how to work with them. Wanted to see what you good folks here use, and if any of it lines up with the recommendations from that link. I'm leaning towards the compression type of packing cube, since we not only need to pack two weeks worth of clothes (with a plan to use the ship's laundry service at some point after the first week) but also need to pack a variety of things for layers when we're in Greenland and Iceland. Being able to compress that down, even a bit, will make it a lot easier to fit each person's stuff into one checked bag and one carry-on. I'm a little nervous about going over the 50-pound per-bag limit on checked luggage with two weeks of stuff to pack, but if I do it's not as bad since I only need to fly to get back home (cruise departs from Cape Liberty).
  3. Hi there! I'm going on Symphony of the Seas next month and my DH & I were contemplating whether or not we should each use airplane approved carry-on size suitcases or just the standard size checked luggage. We like the aspect of getting off the plane quickly and also being able to hold on to everything we'll need for the cruise BUT we also would like to explore the ship and take a dip in the pool on embarkation day without having to lug around our suitcases. In the event we do go the small carry-on sized suitcase (22") route, are we allowed to give it to the porters when we get to the ship? Or do they only take really large suitcases? Has anyone ever given the porters their carry-on sized suitcases? Thanks in advance!
  4. Just a fun, but necessary question to get all of us thinking about packing for our next cruise(s): what was THAT thing that you forgot to pack? For me, it was my slippers. Can't stand going barefoot in the cabin or balcony. Had to dedicate a pair of socks to slipper duty. Needless to say, they were very very dirty on the bottom.
  5. I was talking about this directly with @LetsTryThisTech in the context of his recent cruise on Freedom, but thought I'd open it up to a bigger audience. For those of you who do like to dress in full suit or tux for formal nights, how do you pack it? As best I can tell from reviewing United's baggage FAQs and Carry-On pages, garment bags just aren't allowed any more. You have to bring a regulation size carry-on, and your "plus one item" has to be something the size of a small backpack that can be stowed under the seat in front of you, not in the overhead bin with your carry-on. So do you pack your suit in your checked luggage? Do you just bring a garment bag anyway, and have that checked as well? And a related question -- How is the pressing service? Would be good to get some direct experience from folks who've used it, just so I can feel reasonably safe that my newly-purchased suit won't be fried in the presser or otherwise damaged. I'm assuming it won't be as rough as the regular laundry service, but is it basically the same as going to the local dry cleaners or a bit harsher? Also, how much do they charge for pressing on night 1 so you're ready for formal night the next evening? Need to get these final budget details worked out. I wouldn't be as concerned about this if the suit was "regular" wool used in everyday-use suits, but it turns out that the one I bought is made with 150s wool (never heard of this before I bought it, always thought that wool is just wool), and everything I've read about it says that it's (a) delicate and only meant to be worn for special occasions (which is fine in my case), and (b) it easily wrinkles and needs regular pressing.
  6. Hi Members - I'll be sailing on Allure in September with a 4 year-old. Had a couple of questions about what you can/can't pack, and also wondering if there tried & true cruise hacks/tips that you can share! TIA I've read hacks about bringing hangers and wondering if metal hangers are ok, or do they need to be plastic. Is it better to put it in the carry-on to avoid luggage delays? Juice boxes for my son - If I wanted to bring a couple packs for him to take with us on excursions, any idea if this is allowed? Do all staterooms have mini-fridges? Do all staterooms have a pull-out bed, or are they only on the ones indicated on the deck plans? Power bars - seems to be a lot of debate on whether they can or can't be brought on board. Safer to pack in my carry-on to avoid delays? Also seems like the smaller block type power bars are more acceptable. How strict are they on the "Kids must use the washroom on their own" policy for the Kids Club? My son needs some assistance using the toilet - primarily just putting his pants back on properly. Any other cruise hacks/tips? Thanks! :D
  7. My hubby booked an anniversary cruise for us in September 2018 up the coast of New England and Canada on Anthem! I have SO MUCH time to plan and pack, but I was curious if anyone had taken this cruise and what kinds of outfits to plan for. September on land can be warm, but I'm not sure how it is on sea. Obviously, this is geared more towards ladies, but could use some tips for The Hubs too.
  8. We are cruising on Independence of the Seas leaving out of Ft. Lauderdale on 12/26/16. Five nights - western Caribbean. Any tips for these first time cruisers, particularly in what to pack? I know all the regular stuff, but are there any things I might not be thinking of? For example, someone suggested extra hangers (that seems a little excessive) and someone else suggested a power strip or extension cord. Do we need to bring shampoo, soap, etc.? Any food tips for vegans? Thanks, Friends!
  9. My family will be cruising on the Inner passage on June 24th. We will be bringing our boys, ages 9 & 11. Can anyone offer packing advice? I feel like the packing lists I'm finding are too general. I don't know if we should bring winter gear or not. What about footwear for shore excursions (hiking or rain boots)? Will we need shorts at all? Will it be warm enough to swim? Any general advise for a first time cruise with kids?
  10. I'm in the process for packing for my upcoming Brilliance of the Seas cruise next week, and started thinking of all of the essential gadgets and accessories I've acquired over the years and thought I'd list some of my must-haves for any trip I go on. Please share yours as well. 1. External Battery Pack/Charger This is a must have for me to keep my iPhone and iPad charged when going all-day or when flying long distances and power outlets are not available. It's a bit heavy, but it will keep my phone and tablet charged for days. http://www.monoprice.com/Product?p_id=10392 2. Luggage Tag Holders These are the new improved version--http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M5MDAS0?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creativeASIN=B00M5MDAS0&linkCode=xm2&tag=royalcacom-20--but they're essential for me. You simply print and cut out your paper luggage tags and place them in the holder. There no need to fold, staple, laminate, tape, etc. these as they're ready to go as is. I've used these successfully for my past several cruises. 3. Zip Ties Cable or zip ties are great for securing your luggage. Choose a bright color or one that isn't too common, such as these http://www.monoprice.com/Product?p_id=5777. I've been using zip ties for years to secure my bags as I don't need to worry about a key and don't need to worry about the strength of the luggage lock. What's great about these is that you immediately know whether someone has been in your luggage or not. They're also easy for the TSA to remove if they need to inspect your bags. I simply carry a small pair of scissors in an outer pocket of one of my checked bags, but can always use a nail clipper if need be. 4. Packable Backpack I haven't used this on a cruise yet, but I have on one trip and found it to be exceptional. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DHIZ7CI?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creativeASIN=B00DHIZ7CI&linkCode=xm2&tag=royalcacom-20 The reason I like this backpack is because I can throw it into my luggage, it doesn't take up much space, and I can pull it out and use it for excursions. Last cruise I tried to simply use my carry-on computer backpack. However, it was too heavy and it made my life onboard the ship miserable as I had to unpack all of my electronics and cables, put them into drawers, and then I was always looking for those things. This way, I can keep my computer backpack packed and use this instead. Let me know what your must haves are.
