If you buy gift certificates for onboard credit, will it automatically be added to our onboard account or will it be waiting in the room for us?

We opted to not get the drink package on our very first family cruise (few years back) just to save money but they offered the punch card on like day 5/7 for $69. But we def used it for cocktails.
