SteveinSC reacted to USCG Teacher in Cruise Ship speed limit
There's also other issues such as a ship's wake's effect on local sea life, shorelines, etc. that have nothing to do with fuel consumption that can have environmental effects close to shore. There's no one magic equation that can result in an ocean-wide "most environmentally efficient" speed, but to say that a ship's speed (particularly a ship the size of a modern cruise ship or ULCC) has no environmental impact is wildly inaccurate.

SteveinSC reacted to Oliver in Cruise Ship speed limit
I’m not sure why this is ridiculous. It would be ridiculous if they said we couldn’t cruise or limit ship construction due to greenhouse emissions, but if going a little slower helps the environment, why not? I’m not a ultra liberal environmental tree hugger, but happy to help if I can.

OK, so I looked again and found that this number was sent a few days ago by RCCL as a Press Release to various industry publications.

It’s probably how I came across this piece of info while researching it yesterday...

SteveinSC reacted to CruiseLife72 in Room configuration for 4
We did an interior stateroom earlier this year on Mariner with two young kids and we had the pullman beds. When we entered the room, our beds were together making a queen bed. After the first night, we decided the room was too cramped so we asked for our bed to be split up under the pullman beds. We feel this gave us much more space in the room. Talk to your stateroom attendant to see which option is best for you and your family.
Also, my youngest was 5 at the time and the stateroom attendant was able to provide a wooden railing that was much taller then the built-in railing. He said he grabbed the last one so I'm not sure how many (if any) will be available on your sailing. If you are interested, be sure to ask the first change you see your stateroom attendant.

Just to be clear, I think you will be okay in that room. It's just that ideally, many of us prefer to split up to get 2 rooms instead.

SteveinSC reacted to WhiteSoxFan in Crown and Anchor question
My daughter's now fiance has been enjoying her diamond status for his last four cruises. He had only been on one prior to that as I recall.

You luggage tags will not automatically update. They are "static" once your cruise docs are published. If you want new luggage tags (and I don't blame you, if you do !), call Royal (or your TA) and ask them to re-issue your cruise docs. Then your luggage tags will update.

Well I guess she's getting bumped from gold to Platinum now and then Emerald after our Nov cruise...sweet deal for her!...

The beds should have a railing as I recall, which might come in handy for your toddler. I think you will be fine, but it will be a learning experience. During the day the beds are put back in the ceiling and the room isn't so congested.

It depends what kind of cabin you booked. Check your deck plans, and use the symbol next to your cabin number to see if it's 2 pullman beds (bunks that come down from the ceiling) or a pull out sofa. If you have the pullmans, you can put the main bed together for a king size, and then have the 2 bunks overhead. I wouldn't worry about being cramped. If you're doing cruising right, you're only in there to sleep and change.

SteveinSC reacted to GrubbyGrubbles in Guarantee Cabins
I've only booked 2 RC cruises but have gone with Guarantee rooms both times. Last year it was an Ocean View Guarantee and when we were finally allocated a room we were initially disappointed to find it was on Deck 2. However, I was actually really pleased with the room in the end. The location was really quiet and there was nothing above us either. We barely felt the ship move and I'd have no hesitation in having a room on deck 2 again. This year we went to book and would have been happy taking the risk with another OV guarantee room but bizarrely, the balcony guarantee room was cheaper. We were allocated our room a few weeks ago and we've got deck 9. From the plans it doesn't look like it's in a bad location either but we'll see.
For me, it seems to have been worth the risk so far.

SteveinSC reacted to GrandmaAirplane in Damn impulse buying...
Did the same yesterday... cruising the CP to save a few bucks and booked one of those “Floating” cabanas (@$999 US).
YOLO rationale: We’re going to be 8 family members using it as our gathering place throughout the day... me, I won’t budge from it... the grandkids will love the slide & snorkel directly off the side... nice meal for lunch... we can cancel it later (if the reviews aren’t so great when they come in or the week before if the weather forecast is iffy)... there’s no way that price won’t increase and we couldn’t afford a higher price later (yeah, that one’s really silly - as we shouldn’t be spending that much now anyway ?)

Well here I was stalking the cruise planner for the ultimate drinking package for a good price (haven't found it yet) and today I go ahead and buy the Coco beach club floating cabana for our upcoming cruise.
At this point I might as well spring for the DBP.....
YOLO

...well, the good news is, if you have a change of heart (or come to your senses...whichever comes first) you can cancel without penalty !

SteveinSC reacted to mworkman in Favorite Vacation Drinks??
I must be the odd one here, prefer Blanton's on the rocks, a merlot or a good dark beer. The wife usually has rum and coke or mango margarita, that about as fruit of a drink that she will have.

SteveinSC got a reaction from Melody of the Seas in Coffee in your cabin
I have never been aware of this!!!!! Complete game changer, for me, as I wake up and need my coffee injected into my veins IMMEDIATELY, followed by some sort of breakfast. Waiting on my wife and kids to get up to go get coffee/breakfast has always been like dying a slow death, for me.....and this will solve that. GAME. CHANGER. Thank you! Im not dramatic about it, at all.....
