Sorry to hear that.  I’d recommend Hooked Seafood on a cruise then, the lobster in the MDR isn’t always the greatest and I’d hate to have you get one that’s not that great for your first experience.

Although I’ve seen the windjammer extremely busy, the staff always find you a seat. On my cruise they had staff dotted around the windjammer and they would communicate through walkie talkies trying to find you a seat and I’ve always got one. It’s really never an issue. As well as that you CAN take you plate or whatever outside to enjoy you breakfast lunch or dinner on your balcony or at the pool deck or anywhere! I hope this helps. ?

Although You can, a lot of the great (and I mean GREAT) lobster restaurants are all the way in London. Ive been to a multitude of amazing restaurants in Birmingham but I just can’t find lobster. I definitely understand where you are coming from though!

The "free" lobster tails are usually served on the second formal night of the cruise, on 7 night cruises. Not sure what ship you're on or what cruise?

I loved both, windjammer (deck 11) for me was easier as I was mostly at the pool (deck 11) and also my stateroom was deck 11. I also loved the food, there was variety and flavour. The main dining room offers an actual dining experience though. I love dining so I also loved the MDR. For me it all depended on mood, I can't prefer one or the other as they have their perks.
Windjammer= tasty, variety, quick, efficient (for me due to stateroom location)
    MDR=tasty, service, dining experience
Overall, try both and see what you find easiest and prefer ?

We love the Main Dining Room because the food is good, the service is excellent, and we feel like royalty.  We find that when we get to know the wait staff, we have a richer cruise experience. The Windjammer is fine for breakfast or lunch (especially made-to-order omelettes or stir fry), and it is useful for dinner when you don't want to dress up to whatever the dress code is in the MDR.   That said, there have been changes over time, so you can't compare the MDR five years ago with the MDR today.   In a cruise last month on the Harmony, we noticed items that we used to see all the time weren't there or were available only occasionally.   I was chagrined I couldn't have escargot on one of the formal nights (it's a thing...) On the other hand, we've tried specialty restaurants and noted the following: (1) they aren't that special (decor/ambience), (2) a growing number of guests don't dress appropriately. (3) the food isn't much better than the MDR and occasionally worse, (4) the service can be slow, but (5) the wait staff usually do whatever they can to please you.  If you want a particular food item, you will want to check the restaurant menus to see if the item is available.  A lot of guests swear by the specialty restaurants, which are generally less crowded, but I really don't see the value proposition.  Remember a dinner in MDR is penciled in about $25 or so (when you calculate the 18% gratuity built in to the daily rate, the food now pars out at $45-$50 per day per person).  Thus, when you pay an extra $30-$45 for a specialty dinner, it is like paying $55 to $70 or more per person.  My specialty dinners haven't been that good..... The strength of the WJ is the incredible variety, the disadvantage the crowds at peak periods.   Every cruise our family looks forward to eating duck, lamb, lobster tail, and pork loin/shank in the MDR.
PS.  If you are ever on a vessel with a norovirus outbreak, you will see certain measures put in place on buffet lines.  In Australia/NZ in 2018, the Windjammer rules changed -- guests couldn't fill their own plates in the buffet line -- only staff could handle the food.  it was a bit slower and more tedious.

I'm just 28 days from my next cruise on Serenade out of Stockholm and getting excited!!
I've read a lot about the speciality restaurants. But what does everyone think of the MDR? Is the food quality in decline? What about the MDR versus the WJ? Does anyone prefer one over the other?

Although its simple, a good Pina colada was just great for me and I loved it! I also saw there was a drink that was a mix of Pina colada and strawberry daiquiri. Theres also a mix of mango daiquiri, strawberry daiquiri and Pina colada  and that just sounds divine ?

On board my cruise they gave us waterproof lanyard pouches for free. Im not sure about other cruises but the waterproof ones are great for carrying everything (small) from money to phones and passports and of course a sea pass card. On board, they sell quite nice lanyards that are probably better for walking around the ship with just a sea pass card. You can find these in the promenade ?

Back when I blogged my first cruise on Freedom last year, I had posted a couple of pictures I'd taken of some art my younger daughter had drawn / painted while we were staying in the hotel pre-cruise. Here's the photo again, for those who hadn't seen...

What a difference a year of high school can make! This was Kara's final project for the year in year in her Freshman Drawing and Painting class:

Hand drawn, hand colored, all her own work and effort. I cannot begin to say how proud I am of her, and I can't begin to imagine the career and life she'll have ahead of her as an artist.
Yes, she already has determined that being an artist is her career choice; she wants to major in illustration in college, but may double major in photography after taking photography 1 this year as well, and discovering that even with her benign tremor she is able to compensate well enough to take photos that have gotten her repeated praise from her teacher in that class as well, along with winning many "picture of the week" contests in her class and having some of her photos showcased at gallery events the school has held.

Yep. Even in the most mosquito prone areas in the Caribbean, None touched me. I had one on my wrist and one on my ankle. ?
Oh, almost forgot, id recommend a waterproof much/wallet for a phone, money and definitely and passport. Never leave a ship without one. One more thing, bring ALL required documents no matter how unnecessary you think they may be. I've heard cases where this has happened and people are kicked off the ship. I hope this further helps

As some others have said, looking at online videos helps a lot. From my experience, take plugs ad usb cables as they are allowed on the ship and are easily portably. Depending on which itinerary you have (for this case `I`ll assume its Caribbean) bring sun cream, sun hat as well as mosquito repellent wrist/ankle bands (like these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Body-Source-Repellent-Citronella-Lemongrass/dp/B01ERF2FW4/ref=asc_df_B01ERF2FW4/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=214318306971&hvpos=1o3&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1672378014627312372&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9045532&hvtargid=pla-421643197171&psc=1)
Also don't bring big lighters, matches, hot plates, irons and other fire hazards

You can bring your own but I wouldn't waste the space. I normally get a towel from the places and return it straight after use and just get a new one when I need it to avoid any fines. The only fines you get are for not returning the towel so just don't forget ?

Quick question regarding Towels for the pool.  (I am a newbie so bear with me!)
I think I am right in saying that you can either bring your own along on the cruise or get one from a towel station somewhere on the ship?
I've seen on this blog previously that you get charged if you don't return the towels etc, but I am wondering if you are supposed to hold onto the same towel for the whole cruise and return at the end of can you return after each day and get another one next time you are at the pool? (bad for environment I know...)

    thanks everyone
