For our upcoming cruise in three weeks, I booked a smaller SUV with AVIS - pickup and dropoff is at the dock area. Was around 280$/day, even cheaper and more comfy for a family than taking the blue, green or what so ever bus. And you can explore the whole area around Juneau on your own!

I ended up booking a car thru them as well, my husband wasn't comfortable with Turo. There will be 4 of us in a Kia but we will make the best of it! I just hope they don't give our car away before we get there. Our ship arrives later in the day and our pick up is 4pm.

Yay!!!  Someone else!!  You will LOVE Alaska!  The scenery is so beautiful!  Hope you have some fun excursions planned!  We've got the rent your own Jeep excursion in Juneau, the ZipRider in Icy Strait and looking forward to exploring the area in ISP, a private land tour in Sitka, a kayaking excursion in Skagway, and then taking the ACT bus all day tour to Anchorage.  It's getting closer!!

In Juneau we will be going to Mendenhall Glacier with M&M tours, In Icy Strait we booked Wild Bear Safari, we plan to walk around Sitka, Skagway we booked a Ghosts & Goodtime girl tour with RC & in Seward an Exit Glacier hike with Adventure 60. We plan to stay in Anchorage a few days before heading home. Wish we could go further in the state but we just couldn't swing the time. My hubby is going on the Zip Line in ISP, I'm not going with him though!

We are about 40 days out from our cruise on Radiance in Alaska.  When will the dinner menus be loaded in the app?  Currently, there are a few random breakfast ones loaded and many other days have zero loaded.  I mean I'm soooo ready to start planning what I'm gonna EAT every day!!! 😜

    Thanks!

No idea but we are on the same sailing & I have also been checking the app daily! I'm so excited this is our first cruise to Alaska.

  4. Same for our Alaska cruise so we switched to traditional. We used MTD for 2 of us back in 2019 and it worked great. Now it's too late and we have 6 people so we'd rather eat a little earlier than have to wait till 6:45 and perhaps wait on line to get in.

  5. I booked Wild Bear Safari for ISP -  I saw it recommended on CC & the Google reviews are excellent. The owner operator's name is Luke and he answered all of my questions (give him a day). We like smaller tours and his is only a dozen people, including him. My others cruisers are ziplining in the morning so we are doing this in the afternoon.

We are on Radiance in July 😀

In the app - Profile tab > Select a different cruise > Browse our ships.

Again, no promises the current sailing's menu order will be the same as yours.

Thank you so much, this is super helpful! I had no idea how to find other cruises. Since we are in July, I think once she actually starts sailing Alaska I'll be able to get an idea.

We are only doing 1 specialty dining night so I'm sure it won't be too difficult to get something.

Can you find another 10 day cruise? That might help you figure out the order

It's a 7 night cruise, I was told to look on the app for current sailings but I have no clue how to bring up anything else but the cruise I have booked.

  8. I have no problem getting 2 apps or an app & a salad or whatnot, I'll make it work. Just for planning purposes, I don't want to go out for our specialty dining night and miss lobster night or whatever the one I really liked was.  I like steak, but I don't want to eat the same thing over and over again.

Mediterranean menu...  I worried, but needlessly.  I ordered the Mediterranean steak on two different but very recent cruises.  The  chimichurri sauce, or oil, whatever it's considered, was quite good on the New York steak.  It comes on the side in its own little tiny cup.  And if a person wasn't interested, leave the oil off and it's a steak from Texas.

Sounds like they should just get rid of the "theme menus" because most of the items don't fit the theme at all. I like my steak medium rare, had a hard time getting it right last cruise but I may just send it back if I have to. We definitely won't starve LOL

As of now, from the various menus I've looked at, for 7 day cruises - 1st night, Welcome aboard, 2nd night French, 2nd to last night is Royal (lobster) night, last night, Bon Voyage. The other 3 nights seem to be Italian, Caribbean (at least on the Caribbean sailings), Mexican or British. There's also Mediterranean, but I think that shows up on 9 night or longer. My sailing next week (Caribbean) has British but not Mexican, which is good in one way, because the Mexican menu didn't appeal, but bad because I had made an educated guess as to which night was Mexican & booked a specialty (Jamie's) that night, & apparently it's Caribbean night, which did have things I liked.  I may switch Jamies to Italian night, since I won't want that 2 days in a row, and tbh, the Italian menu didn't really appeal either. A couple of things looked good, but I'll get my fill at Jamies.

Thanks for the reply, our last night is technically at sea so I thought that was Royal Night? I definitely won't go to the MDR for Italian, Mexican or Mediterranean nights which stinks because I love Mediterranean food but this menu is yuck. Maybe on Italian night we'll get apps and dessert only.

It's just so hard to plan.

  11. Jumping on this thread because I'm also trying to figure out the order. I am sailing on Radiance to Alaska in July.  We have early seating and there are 2 port nights we won't be eating in the MDR & we want to plan 1 group specialty dinner. I think I've gathered that the 1st at sea will be French night & Royal night will be the 2nd sea day. How do I figure out the others?

My app (for all 3 dining rooms) says Sorry unavailable.

Thinking about Alaska "Southbound". Did it years back and want to do again.  We flew into Anchorage and stayed  very close to where we caught the train to Seward. Can't remember the name of the hotel? Anybody?

Next: I have been up there three times and not had a chance to do my bucket list halibut fishing... Has anybody done it from Juneau, Icy straight, Haines or Skagway with good results? I know I saw good halibut on the docks in Ketchikan but fiancé' wants to do the lumberjack show and salmon fish off that in town bridge.  So it has to be the others mentioned ...

Next... Anywhere to see bears? I spotted seals, whales, dolphins, orcas, walrus, eagles, moose, and other stuff but no bears. Fiancé' would flip her pancakes to see one.

Next... Good place to get king crab legs? Yeah I know I need to mortgage my house and sell my first born to pay  for them but....

Next... Air fare? I shopped it a few months ago and now its gone into ridiculous kind of expensive? Ideas? Get an agent?

Finally: Souvenirs? What are some of your favorite mementos of your Alaskan adventures? I've  got a "thing" for raw gold so I'll be tracking some of that. I have a bunch of "ulu" knives so Im good there. Im thinking for the Fiancé'.

I'm doing the Northbound for the first time and have many of the same questions.

I used an MEI travel agent and booked Air2Sea, It's costing 2 adults traveling non stop from NJ to Vancouver, Anchorage back to NJ approx. $1300. Haven't used it yet so I can't offer any reviews but it was better than what we were finding on our own pricewise & I like not having to worry if we will make the ship or not.

I booked through Wild Bear Safari in Icy Strait based on reviews from others. It's a small group type excursion, price was reasonable & Luke seems pretty chill.

I also need to eat crab legs in Alaska so I'm curious too!

It is very confusing. My paperwork from my TA said 5:30pm, and in the app under the little person/head, I see traditional dining 5:30pm, but in the dining section of the app, it says 5:00-5:15pm. So I checked with my TA and she said that it did switch to 5:00-5:15pm. So why does my person page still say 5:30pm?

However, if you see your cruise listed on that person page, the app is populated for your specific cruise. Whether the info is correct/accurate is a different story...

Yes, on the dining page it says it's at 5:30, but then on my reservations it now shows Day 3 Traditional Dining 5:15. I guess we will have to wait to see once the ship is back in Alaska!

  14. Sorry if this is a silly question but I haven't cruised since the app was available.

We are sailing to Alaska in July and have reserved the early seating time. My TA said it was 5:15 but the app says it's 5:30. There's nothing in my calendar. I know it's only 15 minutes and it doesn't really make a difference but I'm one of those crazy people that likes to have a pretty spreadsheet handy, lol.

So when I look at the app, is the schedule I see on there for our trip or where the ship is currently located?

I've only done it once and it was the southbound with the land tour at the beginning.

Well it seems we are doing the exact opposite, lol. We have the Northbound booked with a short stay based in Anchorage afterwards. With everyone's schedules that's what worked best for us. We also figured if anyone wanted to extent their stay on land they were able to do so. Would have loved to done a tour of Denali or go further into Alaska but we just couldn't get that much time off all at once.

As far as which side of the ship. I don't think it matters much. When you're in the inside passage you'll have scenery on both sides of the ship. On glacier viewing day the ship will rotate to give everyone a view.

We solved that by booking an aft cabin. I've stayed in one before and loved it. The long walk to the cabin isn't something that bothers me at all. I can't wait to sit in my pj's wrapped up in a blanket viewing Hubbard Glacier!

Now that I've gone once, when I go back I'll most likely do a 7 day roundtrip unless I'm with someone who has never done it in which case I'm down to go another cruise-tour

We are currently treating this as a once in a lifetime trip, but it sure would be nice to get back there again. As I'm researching there's just so many places I'd love to be able to visit but just can't this time around.

I tried Alaskatravel.com, they provide SUVs and OW-rentals. A small SUV is about 1,5k$ for 4 days - they work together with thrifty and overcharge every single item.

Called Hertz: They are quite astonished, as not even they can quote any car on any date in 2023 in Anchorage. Except this suspicious manager's special without any further information.
There's not even an eMail available for any of the two ANC stations.
They assume, the franchise is down.

I currently have a car booked through Expedia, it's expensive but I wanted to reserve something just to have it until we figure things out.

I have a confirmation from Budget in Anchorage for a minivan. 3 days is $790.

  17. I have this booked for our upcoming Alaska cruise and was wondering if anyone has done this and could offer some insight.

We are in Skagway from 7am - 2pm. This tour is booked at 11am & it's 2 hours long. Do these types of tours normally leave from the ship or a meeting point in town? Not sure how early we should be looking to head out in order to be back in time to make the tour.

Also, it says  "ends up at the Brothel" so does that mean we need to get back to the ship on our own afterwards?
