    Day 5 - Coco Cay
Back in July 2020 we were booked on an Arctic cruise that of course canceled. We had already booked shore excursions for it, so I opted for the 125% planner credit. It ended up being quite a chunk of change. I then promptly forgot I did that, and when we sailed through the Panama Canal last fall it didn’t occur to me to use it. Fortunately I finally remembered, and fortunately the expiration date had been extended a couple of times. Whew!
So with nearly $600 of “free” money (the extra 25% we got), I felt I could justify a land cabana at Coco Beach Club. Woohoo! Then, about two weeks before sailing, I noticed (randomly, not during a sale) that the overwater cabana was suddenly just $200 more than what we paid for the beach one. Double woohoo!
I have to say, totally worth it! I didn’t realize that the overwater cabana came with unlimited bottled water, rather than the 8 bottles that come with the land cabanas. Total game changer! The shower was an excellent perk as well. So happy about the whole experience! Oh, and Cabana 16 is in a prime location for sure.
(In retrospect, this might have been the best possible time to try the waterpark, since tiny Enchantment was the only ship in port today so there were no lines. Oh well.)

Starbucks pastries are not included, even for SC but the pastries at the bakery on Anthem (I never know how to spell it !) are.  Unless you are SC there is an upcharge.  Even though they sell Starbucks coffee, it is not a stand-alone SB concession. Maybe that will change in the future ?  I know there was an announcement recently that SB was increasing their presence with Royal.  Maybe that bakery will become a SB concession eventually.

    Day 3 - Charleston
MisterZ and I had never been to Charleston, but Slash’s brother lived here so he had spent a lot of time in the town. I left the day in his capable hands.
We docked at 7a, and could depart the ship starting at 730a. We got right off the ship and headed to Callies Hot Little Biscuits for breakfast. Totally recommended! Here was the Egg and Bacon Sandwich on a Habanero Jalapeño biscuit:

Next we walked around the neighborhoods near the Battery, where there were lots of historic homes:

Next we Ubered over to the USS Yorktown and had a great tour. I highly recommend it if you get a chance!

Last, we headed back across the bridge for lunch at Union and Church, which was fantastic! Make a reservation because it’s very popular:

I really enjoyed Charleston and will definitely be back.
Dinner in the Main Dining Room. Garlic Potato Soup, Artichoke and Pea Salad, Pork Shank, Cod Fillet, and Pecan Pie ala Mode:

The Pea Salad and Pork Shank were great. The rest was okay.
    Bye, Charleston!

Full Speed and Slash went to see the comedian and declared the show excellent. The theater was packed. I retired to blog, so you’re welcome! 😄

I told you, I gave up on that custom when they implemented pre-cruise testing lol.   Cannot jinx it.
And the luggage thing was a great learning experience.  Had I asked Allan to look into it immediately (on Sunday) we might have gotten it back halfway. But I am thankful that I am Type A and pack the way we pack.  Otherwise, it would have not gone well at all.  In the end, I warned the SC gang upon landing in Miami that I am usually a way more fashionable dresser and I just had to go more casual on this sailing, but that sure beats not being able to go at all 🙂

On Allure Star a few weeks ago, the genie met us at our room with a porter/cart.  There were five of us.  When we got on the elevator, our genie used a special card to make the elevator that was going up to go down.  He stopped others that wanted to go up from entering the elevator.  Our genie then handed us over to a special worker and the porter handed over our stuff to another porter.  We were escorted thru customs then the porter packed us into a cab to go to the airport.

Wow. I am trying to sum up my thoughts from our first day and the easiest thing to say is just wow…
Yesterday was amazing. We got to the port around 10 and the star class porters were right on getting our bags tagged and loaded up. Check-in was smooth and took roughly one minute for all seven of us. We sat down in the suite lounge which in my honest opinion was a little bland for being the suite section but I guess Covid has a little to blame for that? The couches were very comfortable but that’s about it. Hossain met us and another family of his and walked us on board around 10:45ish. He has us waiting in the Royal Promenade while he took his first family to their rooms. We decided to have our first beverage on the rising tide bar. I had a lovely mimosa! 🙂 It was nice hearing the champagne bottle popping open. That was the sound that officially resonated vacation for me.

After about ten minutes waiting on the rising tide bar, Hossain came and got us. He walked us to our room (2BR AT deck 9). McKenzie and I were the first in the room and wow, I knew we were in for a great time. The decor on Symthony is beautiful. We had birthday decorations in the room for DJ and I and Hossain gave us birthday cards. I could right a book on the room but I’ll save that for another time.

We then went to our mustard station to get that out of the way. Jake got a hot dog, then we all rode the carousel with McKenzie for the first time. She loved the vibrant colors of the animals. We then came back to the room, our luggage was waiting for us so we unpacked. At 12:30 we had a welcome lunch from Chops delivered to our balcony. I had the shrimp cocktail and filet mignon with asparagus. The filet was a bit over cooked but was still juicy and flavorful so I didn’t mind.

After lunch we finished unpacking, explored a bit, ate Sorentos pizza, went to the spa for the raffle (lost), then came back to the room to get ready for dinner. We had Coastal Kitchen. I got the Smoked Salmon and Crispy Pork Belly for an appetizer and the Salmon for my Entree. I could see myself eating at Coastal every night. My only complaint was our service was a little spotty. We will definitely have to ask for speedier service moving forward because 2 hours sitting for dinner with an eight month old is not my definition of fun. Pre baby I may have liked that but not anymore. I had to leave before dessert was brought out because McKenzie was getting fussy and was ready for bed.

My parents thankfully took night duty for McKenzie so us ‘kids’ could go out. We saw iSkate2.0 and I LOVED it. So much passion in some of the skaters and spunk. I would watch it again. After the ice show…. Well there’s not too much to remember after that because we all got drunk… off of lemon drops for me!

This was a lot to unpack but it is nice looking back at our first day. I am currently the first one up and I am watching the beautiful blue waves on our balcony. Life is good. ❤️

Nothing much to report on my end today. I stayed on the ship and it was the best day ever! Barely saw anyone onboard. Spent a bit of time in a cabana on the suite sun deck, then spent the rest of the afternoon just enjoying the balcony.

Dinner brought us back to 150 CP because I needed to follow through on what I promised @GregD. Tonight Hubby and I both tried the 150 CP filet. The verdict is…I am still #teamCK for the filet. It was not bad, still good, but if I had to pick one, it would be CK. It’s more tender and has a slightly better flavour.

After dinner we caught the ice show, Frozen in Time. The girls said this was their favourite show on the ship. After that, we headed back to the Aqua Theatre to see Aqua 80 again since my 13 year old fell asleep the other night and escaped the hose down. A friend in the Deck 8 ATS did invite a bunch of us to watch from her balcony but we took a chance and stayed down below. From the looks of it, they were prepared this time to record if we got soaked again lol.

Aqua 80 tonight was shortened even more than the other night. The support divers were injured tonight so it was basically down to dancers only. Overall, Aqua 80 has been a bust this cruise, between the weather, tech issues, now injuries, we never saw the full show. Going to have to sail Oasis again to see the full show. 🙂

Landed safely in Fort Lauderdale around 9:15pm! The rest of the crew picked us up at the airport which was a nice surprise. It was nice seeing my brother since I haven’t seen him since Christmas. I am currently 8 minutes in on my Royal Caribbean Covid test so I am blogging to help pass the time along. Fingers crossed 🤞

We arrived to the port and after being dropped off at the Star Class check in, it was wonderful to see @Lovetocruise2002and her family! ❤ We checked in and then our genie Derick came to meet us and bring us to our home for the week - an ATS on deck 9. Derick had some birthday signs and a cake waiting for my mom who turns 80 years young in June. This cruise is the beginning of her birthday festivities. At 12:30 we went to Playmakers to meet up with others in the #MajorStarClassTakeOver. I had the poke nachos and the goal post margarita (minus the jalapeño). Both were delicious. After lunch, we took my friend on a tour of the ship since she's an Oasis rookie. Dinner for us was also at Coastal Kitchen. All three of us had the filet and thoroughly enjoyed it. For dessert, two of us had the poached pear with ice cream and the other had the royale chocolate cake. We ended the night watching the headliner Jesse Hamilton. He played Simba in Lion King and has a fantastic voice. Tomorrow we're doing a private tour in Nassau with Clamtram.

Sleep in day today. Much needed. One kid actually joined me in CK this morning. 🙂
It’s a little windy and rainy today. One friends in the ATS had some balcony furniture topple over and lost some cushions overnight.

No plans for us. Just chilling and staying onboard.

@Lovetocruise2002 in the spirit of not leaving you high and dry I will add to your thoughts. FYI I can't wait to meet everyone! We met our friends from Nevada through our teen on the first sailing of the Adventure out of the Bahamas in June2021, this will be our third sailing together with our cruise buddies AND they are relocating to Florida in a few months! They are staying in a CLS a few doors down from us, we joined them on this their group 50th birthday sailing. Leave it to the kids to bring families together! It's myself, hubby (who ONLY cruises for me!) & daughter 15. We started in a balcony cabin, then 14528 the Ultimate Panoramic family suite opened up so I grabbed it, first time in Star mind you. Never was interested until Sabrina and @WAAAYTOOOshared their Star experiences. Hubby knows no difference, cost that's all he wants to know, lol!
@Sea Squirrel stayed in this suite when we were on the Oasis for Thanksgiving & he was kind enough to share his experience & I was very glad he did. I thought maybe I would switch the cabin if something came up, I was fearful of the motion sickness element especially.
Leticia reached out as our assigned Genie and we worked on some scheduling, the Star Loft appeared & I quickly switched as hubby who ONLY sails for me and puts the Cabash on all my RUB's likes 17 the best. So I contacted Leticia & told her we were changing cabins, crickets....then we were contacted by the amazing Derick Martis, Leticia had been moved to the Harmony so he took over from there. I sent him our previous emails and our transition was seamless.
We had no idea this was the #MajorStarClassTakeover until @Lovetocruise2002 reached out, a day later Derick also asked if we knew about it, so funny. This is our very first Star sailing so I want to be present to experience all it has to offer, we are such a quiet little family yet we find ourselves ready to meet & greet & share this experience.
We are driving to Miami tomorrow, we just stopped & packed the Pub Subs for the 5 hour drive. We are staying at the Hilton Downtown Miami as we are Hilton Gold members & I always choose a room so I can stare at the ships, ( I can choose my own room using the app)  there is a great parking garage also keeping our vehicle secure. Our friends from Nevada are staying there also so we will meet the rest of our birthday group Saturday evening.
See you at Playmakers on Sunday!

I will start with our intros….
Because this is March Break in Ontario, this sailing is with Hubby and the girls.  Hubby and I sailed just before Christmas on Allure, but this will be the first sailing back for the girls since July 2019!  Needless to say, they have missed it greatly, and I think they are most excited for…wait for it…Sorrento’s pizza! SMH
Flying DTW – FLL on Saturday morning (cheaper and better times than going to MIA) and taking a ride share to Miami.  That’s the flight plan.  You can probably guess our hotel, but if not, stay tuned!
Allan F. is our Genie.  I cannot wait to meet him after all that I have heard about him from many others and if @Rags1is ready to adopt him, then we must be in for a treat.
We don’t have much planned in terms of excursions for this sailing.  We did not pre-book anything and will likely just do some self exploring if we decide to get off the ship.
Once again, in the spirit of a live blog, feel free and don’t hesitate to follow along and ask anything.  You can also follow me along on IG: @lovetocruise2002 as I will be posting there too.

It's almost here! 28 months in the making, #MajorStarClassTakeover on Oasis of the Seas 3/13/2022!
28 months ago, a group of us decided it would be fun to book a March Break sailing together all in Star Class.  There was a great deal on Oasis of the Seas at the time and we thought why not?  None of us have ever been a star class sailing where the majority already knew each other. We lost a few dear friends along the way who had to cancel for various reasons, picked up some new friends, some of us have sailed together before, some of us have known each other for quite some time and are just meeting now. We have a total of 10 out of 13 SC rooms accounted for from our group. I am beyond excited for this sailing! It’s going to be a special one!
Because this is an unofficial group cruise, it won’t be your typical blog.  There’s not going to be much of a preamble, and there will be more than one of us blogging.  From our RCBlog community, we’ll have @tiny260, @Neesa, @bellemiche, and @ShakeDownCruise, hopefully they all jump into this and not leave me high and dry lol
As far as the Star Class pre-cruise stuff goes, most of us got our pre-cruise surveys about 8 weeks out.  Genies reached out about 4-5 weeks ago.  The protocols for Star have not changed since December so if you are wanting to know what sailing Star is like during Covid, see past Star Class blogs (between summer 2021-present) by others or myself. I will not bother to bog down this blog with PDFs and literature, unless someone really want to see it, then I can post.
Here is our itinerary (we think lol) for this sailing:
    SUN 13 MAR MIAMI, FLORIDA
    MON 14 MAR NASSAU, BAHAMAS
    TUE 15 MAR CRUISING
WED 16 MAR CHARLOTTE AMALIE, ST. THOMAS
THU 17 MAR SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO
    FRI 18 MAR LABADEE, HAITI
    SAT 19 MAR CRUISING
    SUN 20 MAR MIAMI, FLORIDA

    Here’s my overview
We arrived at the terminal around 10:30 and a Star porter immediately grabbed us!  We went thru the Star line and was on the second floor within a few minutes.  No line at all.  Our genie, Nicoli, met us and escorted us into the suite section to wait for boarding to begin.  About 15 minutes later when boarding began we had to wait in line with all of the other suite people.  I did find that a bit surprising that we were not ahead of that crowd to board.  Since it was so early our Mexican restaurant was not ready so we headed to our room.  Luggage was not there.  After doing some hooting and hollering it was time to eat.  Our food at the Mexican restaurant was o.k.
Headed back to room to unpack then headed for ice cream and milkshakes at the ice cream place.  The milkshakes there were better than Johnny Rockets.  We did eat at Johnny Rockets for lunch one day and had a “new” employee.  She was completely at lost on how to take an order for five people.  Our French fries came out way before our hamburgers, which were totally all wrong.  Hubby stayed to eat his while the rest of us got out of there.  Hubby had a nice chat with the manager and explained the employee was not ready to be on her own.  She needed to still follow someone.
We did hit the casino each night only to be disappointed each night.  I don’t expect to overall win each night but I do expect some give, instead of all take!  It was the worse loosing casino I had ever been to.  Maybe, the machines are tight due to covid.
We ate at most of the speciality restaurants and all were good, except Chef’s table, which was a disappointment. Everyone at the table got their steaks cooked way wrong and didn’t eat them. Even if the steaks were cooked correctly the meat was a cheap piece of meat.  I felt for the people that had actually paid for that privilege.  Service was good!
150 had the best service and really good food.  The server there was top notch!!  Kids had steaks at all places we ate at dinner and each voted the “suite lounge” as having the best steak….ever.
The Garden Martini at 150 was awesome.  I was surprised how much I enjoyed a vegetable martini!  On the other hand, I did not like the lavender martini at chops.  Odd taste
One thing you need to take into account is the amount of “tips” you will need to give.  From our first porter, guy who sat up our breakfast each morning on the balcony (he was awesome), lunch in speciality restaurants or suite lounge, dinner in speciality restaurants, bartenders, cabin steward, Genie, and two porter guys to get to our cab.  Since there were five of us we tipped $10.00 for breakfast, $20 for lunch and $50.00 for dinner.  Porter guys got $10.00 each.  It added up fast.
We saw shows:  Comedy and the Ice show.  Comedy was fine.  We had seats reserved on the front side. Ice show was good and was made even better due to our middle front row seats.  Loved it there! Also, we watched the aqua show from our balcony which was fun.  We did not go to the headliner show because the singer was not our type.  Our Genie would meet us at each show and make sure we had our preferred drink.  Nicoli also met us each night at dinner.  He would then get our nightly snacks order and breakfast order for the next morning.
Our Genie showed up for our first balcony breakfast and sat a few moments with us on our balcony.  We would then see him again at dinner.  Most days it was just at dinner unless we went to a show after dinner, but we texted several times a day.  I think Nicoli figured out fast that we preferred our space and did not need constant cuddling.  I liked using the what’s up app for contact with him.  It was easy just to text him, instead of having to call him.   He always responded immediately and completed what I wanted.  One night I decided during the dinner that I wanted my daughter’s birthday cake to be delivered there. Nicoli made it happen. Both cakes were unbelievable. The taste was really good but the art work was the best I had ever seen!!
Our Genie was a good fit for us.  He is personal, easy going and professional, when needed.  He had “four” rooms our week….five in our room, four in another, two in the other two bedroom aqua suite and I think three in the last room.  Because of lack of replacement, he was on his second tour and due to go home in April for a break.  On some ships, due to lack of Genies, some genies have had to service more than seven rooms.
Our room steward had 15 rooms to clean, one two bedroom aqua suite and the rest were a mixture of inside and balcony rooms.  Our suite was like cleaning three rooms, so he had 18 rooms to clean.  The cruise after us were increasing their passenger count but not staff.  He will have to clean three to five rooms more starting after our cruise.  Every day we would leave two bags full of stuff to be cleaned and pressed.  Two dry cleaning bags are in your room.  You fill out a paper on what you have in the bag.  I have heard horrible dry cleaning stories but all of our stuff came back better than what we get from our dry cleaners at home.
Our passenger account was just over 50 percent.  Definitely didn’t feel as crowed as pre covid.  The casino was crowded.  There’s a good distance between the smoking and non smoking sections.  Non smoking section is bigger too.
We only did one tour and that was in Honduras - Sloth and Monkey tour.  It was so much fun!  If you do this tour  hang back from the crowd.  Let them all run into the monkey cage.  By doing so you will get more personal attention at the end.  In Costa Maya, we walked into town.  The walk there and back was around 4.4 miles.  When you get to the end of the street there’s no signage of which way to go to town.  Go left!  In Cozumel we just walked straight out of port for a bit and walked back.  The weather was perfect in all the places for walking.  We did have rain a couple of times but we were already back on the ship.
The last sea day our Genie had us and two other ladies for a personal hour on the flow rider.  Hubby and son took advantage of that hour.  It was fun watching them!  Son did the rock climbing and climbed right past our room.   Almost close enough for us to reach out and knock him down!
This was our first “diamond” cruise.  We already had unlimited drinks and the suite lounge so really didn’t need the use of the diamond lounge.  We did each get a “free” picture so that was a nice bonus.
A repeat:  I hosted our slot pull on the first sea day at 11 am.  It took about an hour with 79 people participating.  We each put in 15 dollars.  At the end we had each lost $5.00.  People thanked us the whole cruise for hosting!  Our Genie gave us shirts, hats, water bottle and two sets of towel clips that said VIP and reserved to give as gifts for those who won the most money on their pulls.
Our cruise was the first cruise having masks as optional.  Around ten percent (maybe even lower) chose to wear them.  I don’t think we had many cases, if any.  Except for staff wearing a mask the cruise was just like the old days……well, less crowded.
Maybe because we were away from the suite floor….we just never got any unannounced visitors.  Guy came with our preplanned breakfast order, afternoon snacks then nightly snacks.  The Aqua suites are a good distance from any civilization but we ended up loving that.  We are walkers and always enjoyed the long walk down the hallway to our room.
Nicoli left us each a royal hat as a gift.  We gave him cash as we were leaving the ship.  We gave the room steward cash the last night, incase we didn’t see him the next morning.
Our Genie met us the last morning at seven with a porter.  He was thankful that we were leaving that early.  Most star class passengers try to stay until the last moment leaving genies trying to get them “all” off and rooms set up for the next passengers.  Our luggage was put on the cart and we all entered an elevator that was going “up” and Nicoli with a special card made the elevator go down.  He walked us to just before customs and handed us over to another porter.  Customs was just a facial recognition moment then off the ship we were.  The porter was awesome.  He brought us over to the taxi service on the side and had someone take us to the airport.  I’m thinking going to the side for a cab is normally not allowed.  I think you have to wait until they line up at the front entrance.
I started this cruise at 137 pounds. First day off the ship I weighed 140.  Three days later I’m at 138.  Thinking tomorrow I’ll be back to the 137.  At this point, I’m sick of food.  Nothing sounds good.  I’m still stuffed.  By the last night on the cruise I just couldn’t eat, even the fish I was so looking forward to having.
Hubby and I started the cruise thinking “star class” wouldn’t be a good fit for us.  I still tried to keep the rooms clean, but it was hard to keep up with our kids (grown-ass adults), so we did get our monies worth from the cabin steward!  Everything was done so smoothly.  First class service and attention.  I know some of you “hate” to show your special card but I recommend you keep that sucker around your neck to be seen.  You are paying for first class service!
The vacation was one of the best ever, and I attribute that to being star class.  It’s expensive and I would not recommend using monies that should be going to your retirement account to take a star class cruise. You could do several  cruises instead of one star cruise for the same price.  Think hard before you spend that much for one week.
That said, I’m older. More life is behind me than ahead of me.  I’ve spent my time in an interior/balcony room.   I’m getting close to the time that it’s good to spend some of my kid’s inheritance money, so I booked another two bedroom aqua suite - January 2024 on the Harmony.
    Thanks for following!
