So, I pre-purchased these things called Gotenna, while they aren't avaliable yet and are marketed for Hiking and Camping "off the grid", they may work on a ship. It is hard to explain what they are but here is a try:  They are devices that come in pairs like walkie talkies and use radio frequency to allow you to use your smart phone to text without cell service or wifi.  My only real question will be, will these devices have the same issues the Motorola walkie talkies have when it caomes to all the metel on a ship?

I am sure many of you will have gone on at least one cruise before I go again in June 2016, so if anyone gets them and uses, make sure to give a review as to if they work.

Thank you for taking the time to reply Mark.   I'm glad it worked well for your family.

I'm hoping there are other solutions.   I'd rather not have to pay the high cost of internet on board.

With two teens I "had" to buy wifi packages when we sailed on Oasis. We then used Google Hangouts  to communicate. We use T-Mobile and amazingly enough were able to use wifi calling, even with the phones in air plane mode. I called my parents while sitting on my balcony en route from Jamaica to Cozumel.

The wifi service is pricey (we paid a total of $280 to simultaneously connect four devices for the whole 7 days), no doubt, but when you factor in the ability to communicate aboard ship it eases the pain a little. The service itself is actually quite good. We were able to watch YouTube/Netflix and quickly backup our vacation photos, etc.

    Esteemed, well traveled colleagues,

I need your help.  We are taking our first ever Royal Caribbean cruise on the April 6th.  Our family (including our 14 year old daughter) will be travelling with friends who have a 14 year old daughter and 17 year old son.  I have no worries about the girls as they are very close and will have each other to hang out with. I am a little concerned about our friends' son.  I cannot seem to locate the "teen club" on the Brilliance nor am I able to find any teen specific activities for the 14-17 year old group on the past Cruise Compass.

Does anyone know of what types of teen activities are availabile on the Brilliance?

    Thanks all!

My son and I did the Royal Swim at Dolphin Discovery in Cozumel (Chankanaab) three years ago. At the time, they sold videos of the various activities that we did with the dolphins. Here we are during our experience.

Cozumel's dolphin experiences are definitely superior.  RC offers some excursions as well as third party offerings too.

    There's Dolphin Discovery and dolphinaris.com

18 - 25 inches here too!    And at just under 300 days, it's too many to count!

I'll be thinking that when I get out the snow blower tomorrow for the 4-6" we're supposed to get tonight through tomorrow morning. Fortunately, that's a whole bunch less than what Boston is getting from this storm.

    Matt,

I always wondered what "collared shirt" meant, exactly.  Is it an oxford dress shirt, or can it be a polo shirt with a collar?

Dressing up is the only thing I dislike about cruising.  I don't want to wear shorts and flip flops per se, but I don't want to wear a suit, or worse a tux either.   It seems older people like getting dressed up because that is their generation, but most companies do not dress in shirts and ties anymore.  I've only been on one cruise, Jewel of the Seas last year, and on the two nights where dress code was formal, I ate on my balcony or the windjammer.  I think if I was on the Queen Mary II or something it wouldn't bother me, but in the Caribbean on RCCL it does...  not sure why.

         Thanks,

P.S.  I just started listening to your podcast and I love it!  I am going on the Vision of the Seas 02/07/2015 for Western Caribbean.

No we just went to the youth club as soon as it was open. DD is 14 now so we're not sure what accomdations can be made. If it was up to her she would go in with the voyagers but I doubt that's possible given she's 5" 5'.

We are leaving in a week so I'll let you know how we go.

    Luke -

Was there any pre-cruising paperwork that you completed to make them aware of your daughter's disability.    We have the same situation and I'd like the staff for the teen program to be advised.   Sometimes pulling someone aside is not always possible.
